    Colne to Blackpool South DMUs

Halifax and Huddersfield also benefit from more frequent Transpennine services and frequency increases since BR days have brought even more trains to Manchester and Leeds. Burnley and Accrington by comparison have no through services to Manchester and only a hourly service to Leeds and half...

    Manchester Victoria resurgent

But what a turn around in the last few years since the slim pickings of the early 1990s. It now has 4 trains p/h to Wigan, one of these extended to Southport, the other to Kirkby, the other 2 via Bolton. Hourly Blackpool services came back in 2008 to be joined by North Trans-Pennine services in...

Rhyl station is one of the most violent in Britain

Morecambe's not much better. The only bonus is the place has no visitor attractions so there's no reason to go to begin with..

    Lancaster - Leeds Rostered Units

One interesting fact is that it does connect Leeds with the surviving stub of the former Midland Railway from Lancaster Green Ayre, the Heysham Branch being former Midland territory and the current branch via Bare Lane was LNWR. There was even a Morecambe avoiding line for freight so they could...

Northern introduce pre-Christmas loco hauled services

First saw that on the Manchester Railways Facebook page and tried to enquire how many coaches would be in the formation and where they would stop. The general reply on stops was Chorley, Horwich Parkway, Bolton, Salford Crescent & Manchester Vic. I assume it's the same going back but with some...

Forner Station Buildings used for other things

There's also now a Travelodge Hotel occupying part of the Southport Lord Street station site and much of the facade. Morrison's is still there though. Former Morecambe Promenade station also houses an Arts & Entertainment venue called The Platform.

    Glasgow To Liverpool direct?

Liverpool - Glasgow services were never the same after Liverpool Exchange closed having to take the longer (and slower) route into Liverpool via St Helen's. Plus the direct line via Ormskirk didn't interfere with the main line between Preston & Wigan and was of course more direct and probably...

    Virgin Trains to Blackpool

I'm not surprised it's quiet, who on earth wants to travel at that daft hour of the morning? Very few it seems...

    Southport-Wigan line 1990s

I don't really see many 142's on Man Vic - BPN's although I'm sure they do appear, but I've mainly seen 150's/156's on the majority of diagrams. Sure there's a faster services as an alternative but they're not available to all stations en route. As the majority of 142s/150s/156s & 158s are part...

    Southport-Wigan line 1990s

Well what a change and not for the better... in fact the infamous ex-Merseyrail 142s are seen quite often these days from my experience.

    Southport-Wigan line 1990s

Did Pacers infest the Southport line as much in the 1990s like they do today? Its not uncommon these days when you arrive at Southport Chapel Street to find a full line up of 142s at the bufferstops!

    Northern Rail DMU shortage

Yes, I agree I'd think a loco and at least 4xDRS MK2's would be good on a Manchester peak time service, don't these see hired in use on some Anglia services between Norwich and Yarmouth?

Bradford Passengers Livid as Ministers Refuse to Scrap 'Hated' Pacers

I was unfortunate to board one of the ex-Merseyrail 142 units yesterday and whilst it had new seat covers, it still smelt of mothballs and seemed to have escaped the paintbrush..

Northern diagrams gone to pot today?

Don't know about different formations but I joined a Wigan - Stalybridge 142 which turned out to be an ex-Merseyrail unit which despite new seat covers still managed to stink of mothballs on boarding it :( Seems some 142s seem to be getting new seat covers but escaping the paint brush and air...

    Merseyrail overcrowding in mornings

I've been at Liverpool Central on a number of occasions at various times and every Southport train leaves full and standing - and thats sometimes offpeak! Ormskirk & Kirkby services are very busy aswell but Southport's are almost crush loaded at times.. I suspect in holiday periods when the...

    Unavailability of toilets on TPE

Alot of branch line station toilets were closed under BR cutbacks and rationalisations - I'l use the Windermere Branch as a classic example. A station as integral to a town centre like Kendal should have customer toilets. It's a very busy calling point on a major tourist railway. Its like we...

Might depend on what they need to do when they get there!:wink:

    Strengthening seaside trains in Summer

A shame they can't install a loop at Lytham or St Annes and increase frequency to half-hourly to Blackpool South. Perhaps if there was one through train an hour from Manchester that might help also?

    Strengthening seaside trains in Summer

I'm sure 185s released from some Scottish services went to operate the new TPE Newcastle service so I can't imagine there's even many of those spare... I'm expecting more stories of crush loading on Pacers & Sprinters before the end of the holidays!
