Does anyone know whether the complete itinerary on a multileg DB advance ticket must be kept to, or is it only the IC/ICE parts, with some flexibility for the legs on S bahn or RB and so on?

If I do a search for a day return, today, Denmark Hill to Amberley, changing at Clapham Junction, Network Rail Enquiries gives a fare of £30. But I think the correct fare is £23.20, which is offered on ticket machines. Is NRE wrong or am I?

As I understand it, rail operators pay tax, at some level, on the energy they use, whether that's in the form of electricity or diesel. I can never seem to find any figures, either on the total quantity of energy used, or the tax paid on it. Are they available anywhere, even as an estimate?

[original OP edited to make clear that the question being asked applies regardless of whether travelling on a through fare, or on so called "split tickets"] As I understand it, if travelling on split tickets making a multi-leg journey, and a connection for a leg with an operator-specific ticket...

Am I just noticing them more, or are they increasingly often a cause of disruption, and if so why? Are lorry drivers navigating by google maps? Also, does the railway attempt to recover costs (whether direct costs of physical damage, or costs incurred by disruption) from the owners of the vehicles?
