but how is that possible because when you try and buy a retrospective ticket for an already departed service, it says “not available” on the apps. You have to buy a ticket for a later service
I frequently get off slightly early on advance tickets. No one has ever battered an eyelid when barrier didn’t open. Also, a TfW conductor (wrongly) said to me once, you can get on a stop or 2 late if you want as long as it’s the same train but you can’t get on a stop early
I’ve been checked everytime! Travelled the route a few times in the past month. A guard found a young lad with an invalid ticket with no means to buy another. His details were taken
Why is the Buxton line never earmarked for improvements? Journey times are terrible, electrification is costly due to terrain and low tunnels. They could at least provide a speeded up service or make line speed improvements. Something I’ve noticed over the past few years is the train comes to...
I guess this is common? I’ve rarely travelled on the sleeper. Running late so missing stops unless requested.
On a separate topic, a man has been chatting on his phone for an hour and it’s 8am now. This is not a normal commuter service into London / Brum / Manc etc so would you agree the...
I was once on a service from SOUTHAMPTON to BRIGHTON and somewhere nearer Brighton, on came 2 inspectors who checked the whole train and got off at Brighton. They were not backwards in coming forwards. That’s my only experience of Southern ticket checking
I never claimed to be an oracle of all things Preston station. I merely use it fairly regularly, am often in a rush and generally use platforms 3&4 from the main entrance or the side entrance. I’ve not had the luxury of studying the layout so things like the underpass, the car park entrance and...
I’ve learnt a bit today. Thanks for your input and also for the reference library of ontimetrains. I’d forgotten about that one. Also I didn’t know RTT could be forced to show historic running times / performance
I changed at BHM, walked to BMO and was told it would be cancelled and should board the next one. I couldn’t remember the exact time as I travel a lot on trains everyday of the week but I think I can piece it together now.

Thanks all for your help. My claim was approved
They are quite hot at Stoke on Trent. I arrived this week at 8.50pm and barriers were still up with staff still present milling around

So you can’t get to the outside world from the underpass then?
Where does this underpass come out? I know there’s a side entrance facing the Fishergate shopping centre
Preston seems ripe for having ticket barriers. Not sure why they’ve not introduced them yet
What about when using platforms 3-4 and coming straight in from front entrance / going out via front entrance? I’ve never been accosted

Underpass? I’ve not seen this! I usually use platforms 3&4 so where is this underpass?
I find they new street barriers are usually shut. My QR code wasn’t displaying and they wouldn’t let me through. Consequently, I missed my train despite me showing my email confirmation

I’ve never seen any ticket checks at preston before and I’m there once every couple of weeks...
So would this journey have meant a direct connection from Castleford through to Wakefield, Dewsbury, Mirfield and Huddersfield? I never realised this and it would be very useful to me right now!
