I've just booked tickets to Newcastle for this coming Saturday, in the past I've always booked far enough ahead to have them sent 1st class post for free or bought at the station.

4 adults (no railcards) travelling from Glasgow - Preston and back on the same day (25 April), off peak day return is £33 per person.
I've tried a few sites and different combos but can't seem to get it cheaper by splitting anywhere and can't seem to get any 4 person groupsaver discounts...
I use this thing anything between 12-20 times a week and I have a few questions that I've mulled over when bored riding.

What's the deal with travelling to Fife from Glasgow, why does it cost so much? You can get to Dundee, Inverness, Aberdeen, Dumfries and places even further afield and back for less using advanced fares, groupsavers, etc.
But Glasgow to Dunfermline for example costs £17.10 for a cheap day...
