What's the deal with travelling to Fife from Glasgow, why does it cost so much? You can get to Dundee, Inverness, Aberdeen, Dumfries and places even further afield and back for less using advanced fares, groupsavers, etc.

But Glasgow to Dunfermline for example costs £17.10 for a cheap day return. Splitting at Haymarket saves hardly anything. Does my head in, any way round it?

Buy your ticket from Hamilton Central at the QS ticket office, valid as long as you travel from Queen Street

Thanks for the reply, so I go into the Queen Street ticket office and ask for a return from Hamilton Central to Dunfermline Town and that allows me to travel from Glasgow to Haymarket on the Waverley service then up to Dunfermline on the Fife Circle?

How much does this cost for an off peak/cheap day return? Can I buy it at my local station (Westerton) as well or only from QS, the QS office is often mobbed?

In general, you can buy any ticket at any station, so you could buy the Hamilton Central - Dunfermline Town ticket at Westerton (although not my area so I don't know if that particular ticket is valid from Westerton itself to Queen Street).

An Off peak day return HNC - DFE is £12.30, an anytime day return is £17.40

You can buy any ticket from any station. It should be around £13/14

And is that valid on the route outlined above?

As Scotsman says, it is valid from Queen Street to Dunfermline Town and around the Fife Circle (going by what he has said previously, haven't checked myself). No idea if it is valid from Westerton though, someone else will have to check.

Doesn't need to be valid from Westerton, I have a Zonecard which takes care of that section.

It doesn't seem to come up on the Scotrail website when I put Hamilton Central - Dunfremline in, it tries to send me on the Edinburgh via Shotts line.

Perhaps a really daft question here but I don't need to buy a ticket from Glasgow - Hamilton Central as well do I?

Using the East Coast site it is saying it is valid.

No, just buy the Hamilton Central - Dunfermline Town ticket. If you can, take a printout of the East Coast site which shows that it is valid just to be on the safe side. For example the 08.45 departure from Hamilton Central goes to Central, you walk to Queen Street, get the service to Waverley and then onto the Fife Circle.

It sends you via Shotts because coming from Shotts would require a chnage at Bellshill, however it's valid to go into town and then out again.

Put in Hamilton Central to Dunfermline Town then in the via box put in Glasgow Queen St. You'll see this ticket is valid.
