Simon Calder - 10 ways to fix our railways

I'd love to see the driver sell the tickets to the 50 or so people getting on the dogboxes from Market Rasen or Metheringham to Lincoln on a Saturday. It would add a nice 30 minute delay to the journey.

    Avantix Machine & "Not Via..........."

Yes as other posters have said, it should have been sorted out by now. I must also add that after looking an idiot for not knowing where the "not via" was the thing then auto non issued the ticket because it "failed to communicate with printer" at which point the passenger actually said "have...

    Avantix Machine & "Not Via..........."

Yes this a complete pain. I had to do a couple of more unusual long distance tickets the other day, and had to play a game of "guess where the not via ...... Is" I got the impression the passenger thought I didn't know what I was doing.

Someone throwing up on a train - what can be done?

I always find it best to keep very large passengers away from "wafer thin mints" just to be on the safe side. And always have a mop and bucket on standby.

It's used by lots of us guards!

The London Midland Staff Shortage and Cancellation/Bustitution Thread

Sounds similar to our place. I worked for LM for a year after my bit of Central Trains became LM so saw a bit of it before I changed companies. From the people I keep in touch with who work for them they seem to think morale as a whole is pretty low at the moment. I know some guards have now...

The London Midland Staff Shortage and Cancellation/Bustitution Thread

I always thought LM had the same kind of rostering as us local lot on EMT (as we are all ex-central), therefore I thought you could only have so many people around 3-4 off on application leave on each day, depending on depot size. Any more applications for leave would be what is called "in...

Update on LM ticket office closures

I hear they have staff shortages in all jobs, booking offices, guards, drivers. A lot of people have left and morale is dreadful.

Gangs of drinkers blighting York and trains from York

I work trains regularly on Friday nights and Saturdays in my area. Some are ok but Saturdays always bring out the gangs of intimidating drunks, usually groups of men old enough to know better. Add to this the dreadful squeals of cackling groups of women on hen parties, and the screaming of...

    Disturbances on the trains

When I've worked really bad trains for people messing about its usually been blokes old enough to know better in their 30s/40s for some reason. Friday and Saturday nights seem to bring them out. Some of the worst trouble I've had comes from families on outings to Skegness.

    Worst Sunday Rail Service

It is most definitely a dreadful service round here on Sundays. Why an hourly service can't run to Nottingham starting at about 1000 I have no idea. There seem to be enough staff who would work the Sunday's required. I have always got the impression that there is no effort on the part of the TOC...

Home Office to consider "mass screening of train passengers"

I must be half asleep today because when I saw this thread title I thought it was referring to mass medical screening. Sort of "Well this machine says you've got the clap. . . .cant use your railcard then I'm afraid!" . . . . Seriously though, I think introducing this sort of security...

Disabled child refused travel with FGW

It's the same here, if someone turns up in a wheelchair I get the ramp out and they get on. And then get the ramp out when they want to get off!

"Too many railway workers are paid to do nothing"

Neither will I... The newpaper industry are the most hypocritial lot out there!

"Too many railway workers are paid to do nothing"

"Too many journalists are paid to write a load of twaddle" that's my opinion. Tell you what let's sack everyone who's job is thought of as a waste of time by journalists.... Oh that would just leave one proffession, journalists. Never mind they will have plenty to write about moaning about the...

when should destination blinds be changed

I normally do them after I've left the last station on the trains journey. However this is not always easy as a lot of our blinds have completely broken and just display as blank. This is due to the new 'easy winding' installations on the refurbs of our 153s and 156s which fell to bits pretty...

Doors Blocked By Suitcases and Bag Onboard East Coast HST

Sounds like our skegness trains. Double buggies and gigantic cases all stacked up wherever they can stack them. Awful!

Driver Only Operation (DOO) - When will it arrive?

This is an interesting question and one that I have been pondering for some time, especially since the McNaulty Report came out with its "default" DOO position. Where I work in Lincolnshire I can imagine DOO would not be terribly easy to implement, and there would have to be a member of staff...

Top Tips (Enter at Your Own Risk)

Saturday Passengers: Make train doors magically open by staring with your mouth wide open transfixed by the doors in the same manner as one would stare at the door of a recently landed alien spacecraft. Whatever you do, do NOT press the illuminated button that says 'open'. And take no notice...

    Class 172 - Ceiling Leaks

Yes they are those ones! The refurb on them has made them look pretty but not solved the main issues.
