Could we see fast Southampton > Brighton services?

Was thinking about this last Thursday when I was taking a last ride on the 313s. This stretch of line needs a way of providing limited stop longer distance trains, along with all stations stoppers, with appropriate connections along the way. I had also thought about reopening the Up loop at...

Should last trains of the day always have toilets

OK, its not amazing (I failed English at school so don't always pick the right words) Lets go with: Specific decisions taken over time have led to a number of our services still not having have toilets onboard.

Should last trains of the day always have toilets

It is amazing really how many of our services still do not have toilets onboard. Following the retirement of the 313s this weekend we have nine fleets in operation like this, with only one of these to be replaced with toilet fitted trains in the near future. All are EMUs and all bar two fleets...

Which city in the UK is most likely to get a Tram/Light Rail system next?

Whilst the question starts "Which city in the UK is most likely" there is also the question of "which city would be suited" to a tram/light rail network. Having been there one day last week and thinking about systems which have existed in the past, Brighton could be a great city to see trams...

Caledonian Sleeper to serve Birmingham and Manchester

Probably as well to make the call at Rugby instead of BHI, then the service can use the Trent Valley route or go via Birmingham. Down Highland passes at 22:22, the Up at 06:38 so that wouldn't be unreasonable, and there are LNWR connections in either direction (for Coventry & Birmingham and for...

Southern Daysave - what's the catch?

Recent replies are right on cue as I am planning a DaySave day out on Thursday. So if I've read this right, as long as I order online today, I can then collect from Reading or Mortimer (non Southern stations) on Thursday morning? In addition, a poster earlier commented that on the Southern...

Armed Forces to the Coronation by Train

Surprised these are running back as 1M as opposed to 1Z, maybe that's to stop them standing out.

Negative perception of booking offices and clerks

Ticket office staff at Reading are very good and I try to use them where possible when I want a walk up ticket on the day (such as when I go to London for the day). They are also great at issuing rangers and Rovers for different areas of the country with ease (granted I normally go armed with...

Wherry Line Ranger - how to buy one

Virtually all rangers and rovers are available to buy from any ticket office or on train staff. Some may not get asked for them often, so hesitancy may indicate inexperience of issue rather than refusal. For the Wherry Rover, ask the clerk to look in “Rovers and Rangers” for ticket code “WRR”

How to make the most of HS2 if only the Old Oak Common to Curzon Street part is built.

With the GWR Superfast services now (for the time being) not running, and all EL trains now in the core the platform release at Paddington could probably accommodate four HS2 trains per hour as an interim, plus a connection for future emergency contingency would not be a bad thing.

My proposal to split up the CrossCountry Network

As a user of the XC service from Reading the thought of the Birmingham train having three more stops and then landing at Moor Street is not attractive at all. Instead of carving the Bournemouth to Manchester route into bits the solution to satisfy your wishes (which seem to be driven by diesel...

    Replacing the Parry People Movers

With the passing of John Parry last month (source: RAIL 978, page 23), could we see other changes at the company?

Ticket gates on the higher-numbered platforms at Manchester Piccadilly

As long as they don't adopt the Blackpool North model, when having used the gate line you still have to negotiate the gorillas to access the platforms

    Opportunities Increased Use of Split/Join

With the now more wider use of five car express trains, the scope for splitting and joining for core route strengthening of our long distance services is more likely. Not just with two destinations but also just for a double set over the core route, which is split at a major stations and the...

Fares on replacement buses should be cheaper?

We have regular replacements between Reading and Bracknell and on those occasions I would always use the parallel Reading Buses Lion 4/X4 service (even before the £2 offer) as its cheaper and more frequent.

Onward Travel options from Old Oak options post-HS2

North Acton appears closer (marginally) but East Acton may be preferred for capacity/safety as it has facing platforms as opposed to North Acton's island.

Can the class 701s be reformed as 8-car units?

    Notionally, the 60 units (600 cars) replace 91 Cl455 (364 cars), 24 Cl456 (48 cars) and 36 Cl458 (180 cars), a total of 592 The 30 five car sets are then LFL for the 707s

    Scotrail HST alternatives?

If only so many mk4 vehicles had not been ditched, Scotrail could have had some of those like the sets which TfW have, working with cl67s

Should train companies introduce a separate fare or fee for pets?

Too much admin involved for very little gain. It works in the bus industry (and on urban light rail) as operators have small areas but not for National Rail

    SWR - Not holding train

Sounds like a very poor show by SWR here. Customers connect between main and branch line trains for most of the dal, all week long at Ascot so the guard would have known that there would be people making the change. Standing at the rear of the four coach Aldershot service in platform three they...
