    Ticket Barrier Blues

The age of the system, the age of the ticketing standard and the original specification/purpose of the system would all be relevant considerations here.

    Ticket Barrier Blues

Almost certainly this - it's an opportunity for a human to see the railcard. And yes, it's infuriating and clunky.

Thameslink announces sudden re-opening of Widened Lines to Moorgate but not really

Spotted in this morning's disruption (mis)information relating to a train fault breaking Thameslink for the morning commute, some good news for fans of unexpected diversions via Barbican. Reminded me of this abandoned stations page. Edit: hyperlink and quoted text added at moderator request...

Taxi ranks at Elizabeth Line stations.

Personally, thinking about trying to keep this journey as practical as possible, I'd suggest changing at Farringdon for Thameslink two stops south to Blackfriars. There is a direct lift from the Elizabeth Line platform level to the southbound Thameslink platform and you can take any train from...

Market Harborough to London St Pancras options?

At the suggested rate of usage, 3 days per week, this would work out substantially more expensive than buying a season ticket.

Why do people not move down carriages to make more space?

This isn't a universal truth on the Underground. It depends on the location of platform entrances on individual routes. It's certainly true of the Elizabeth line though, given that most central sections stations have their platform entrances and exits in the same place relative to the train...

Can GWR intercity trains use Paddington P14 ?

Yes, one could once walk up the stairs on 13/14 and turn left and left again and carry on down to the H&C line. This was fantastic so long as the station was quiet and you were energetic and able-bodied. The former generally not being the case, the current arrangements are generally better for...

    Thameslink fare evasion

The first thing to do is very much to wait for the letter. A solicitor can't really help you until there's paperwork, and you most likely will not need to involve one. If you've been honest above that you usually travel with a ticket, then it's very, very likely that they will simply send a...

    German Rail in decline ?

This is true, but also a partial picture. Passenger operations are much more fragmented than the infrastructure. A lot of suburban and especially middle-distance services are tendered to other operators, and even DB Fernverkehr is beginning to see increased route competition. It's not...

ASLEF non-contractual overtime bans -various dates and TOCs

In contrast, the last one absolutely ruined GTR services for the duration.

Deutsche Bahn First Class worth it?

No, it is not. Some other countries do permit pass holder access, e.g. Austria and Sweden, but Germany does not.

Deutsche Bahn First Class worth it?

Don't bank on at-seat service being available, especially on this route. I don't think this detracts that much from the offer. First class is worth it particularly if you're travelling as a couple and can manage to reserve seats across a table. You definitely do want reserved seats for this route.

    379 Storage Movement

They cost money to store and keep in something close to working order. They don't have much potential use beyond GB and the government doesn't currently seem to have much interest in leasing them. At some point, it may be logical for their current owner to dispose of them simply not to have the...

Time from Gatwick Airport North Terminal.

https://www.gatwickairport.com/globalassets/to-and-from/airport-walking-and-cycling-routes---full.pdf This PDF from the airport website does show a walking route. Impossible to recommend, though. Use the shuttle. Allow 25 mins from passing through the arrivals doors into the landslide area of...

Waiting for a settlement from fare dodging

They're going to want to calculate the fare for settlement based on Anytime Single fares. Money you'd spent on tickets which weren't valid for the complete journey you made won't make a difference. If the other journey is something they've managed to trace and is also on...
