Was cancelled in the endStrangely there is a path from Crewe H.S. to Carnforth Steamtown on Wednesday, and apparently it is pathed to use the turntable (the path is 5Z41)
Shouldn't need to be next to the coaches to 'talk' to the DVT, can send TDM signals through the 89's jumpers.
At least, the normal set up of TDM permits a dead loco to send signals through.
It's not really anything to do with LSL as such; any unpowered "AC Loco TDM" fitted vehicle (loco or DVT/DBSO) must "pass through" the two TDM circuit wires from one end of the vehicle to the other. It does this via normally-closed Line Closing Relays (LCRs) in the TDM Rack.If LSL have made it work like that.
Would the LCRs function properly on 89001 if, as reported, it had a failed battery charger and was therefore electrically dead ?The TDM Rack in the Master vehicle in the formation (the one with the driving key inserted and turned) opens all the LCRs by sending out a burst of carrier wave, then messages the next nearest TDM rack in each direction to confirm if a TDM-fitted vehicle is there. If there is one, it gets configured as a Slave, then it closes its own LCR; the Master then searches for another Slave etc etc.

This does of course all depend on the wiring being in the right place in the loco that it can work from either end or through the loco, not just the fundamentals of how it was designed in the first place.So the answer is yes, that is what "normally-closed" means here: if there is no power to the relays , it sits in the contacts closed (switch on) position, which bypasses the whole locomotive and connects the RCH jumpers at the two ends together (just like on each normal coach of the train).
Power is needed for the locomotive to respond to the carrier wave and become an active part of the driving system, but without that the loco falls back to being a very heavy coach. Clever design and obviously carefully thought through.
Strangely the 40 hauled some of the trip solo, and the rake had no generator coach, how was the Central Door Locking powered? Thank you in advance for any informationI also caught this tour amongst other yesterday at Chester, Rhyl and Wigan. D413 always looks stunning!
