Hi all,
In a couple of weeks I need to travel from Doncaster to York, and then a couple of days later travel from York to Wakefield, and then later in the day, Wakefield back to Doncaster. The outbound journey will be off-peak (10:30ish), but I will need to do the York to Wakefield stint at...
Hi all,
I'll soon be commuting on a weekly basis for a year from Conisbrough (South Yorkshire) to Oxford for work. I will probably be able to commit to a set train each week, and should be able to travel off peak. going on a Monday evening and returning Thursday evening.
The way I've done it...
Hi all,
I will be travelling Doncaster-Oxford in May, travelling on Friday via Sheffield/Birmingham direct (no problems) and returning on the Sunday.
Due to major signalling works at Birmingham New Street, the trains back are via Paddington/Kings Cross and then up the East Coast Mainline.
I...
Catching the Lincoln-Scunthorpe service this morning made me wonder if there are any similar journeys which in a straight line or by road are fairly short, but by direct train take an absolute age?
Lincoln to Scunthorpe is 29 miles by road. The direct service via Sheffield takes 2h45m!
We’ve...
Alright, a bit of a wordy/vague title, but I'll explain further.
Find the longest (time-wise) but shortest possible route journey by rail between two stations less than 2 miles apart. In other words, walking distance in real terms, but you decide to take the train instead...
An example to show...
Hi all,
I will recently be taking on work in Oxford for a few months (starting first week of September) while still living in Doncaster. I will be travelling down on a Monday morning and returning Wednesday evening.
I wonder if any of you have any good splitting/routing solutions for me to...
Hi all,
Have to travel to Nottingham tomorrow for work instead of Derby. Will my Doncaster to Derby season ticket cover it? If not, how far can I get without it (and without going to Derby)?
My journey planner wants me to change at Meadowhall and jump on the Leeds to Nottingham service.
Hi all,
Not sure if this has been discussed a million times before, but as I search for the cheapest way to get from Conisbrough to Derby 5 days a week, I've been struck by the antiquated system by which we are charged for season tickets. I'd be more in favour of a £x-per-mile system, which I...
Hi all,
Soon to be commencing a rather lengthy Conisbrough-Derby commute every day, so looking at season ticket options.
Standard CNS-DBY is £330.70 for the month.
CNS-MEX & MEX-DBY gets that down to £310.30.
MEX-DBY on its own is £269.20, and I only live 3.5 miles from Mexborough station...
Thanks all - apart from Scott. Northern monkey, indeed. ;)
For what it's worth, my proposed route was via Stansted Express to Tottenham Hale, tube to Euston and then Virgin up north.
I've gone via Peterborough with XC before, but that's irrelevant in this argument isn't it. seeing as the...
Hi all,
Long, embarrassing story short:
I was meant to be flying from Stansted the other day, but got all the way down there from northern England before realising I'd forgotten my passport. I decided not to fly, as it was a cheap Ryanair flight and the admin fees for changing etc. would...
Many thanks indeed for your helpful and considerate replies.
It is all hypothetical for now, but I agree that staying in Oxford for a few nights a week would make much more sense, and maybe just purchase a series of Advances in advance if the situation arises.
Hi all,
Just done some very basic research into a season ticket for a potential hellish commute (Sheffield to Oxford), to get the general idea of price. Already noticed that the same principle applies as to normal fares - it's cheaper if you split.
Sheffield to Oxford (12 months): £13,108...
