Hi all,

I'll soon be commuting on a weekly basis for a year from Conisbrough (South Yorkshire) to Oxford for work. I will probably be able to commit to a set train each week, and should be able to travel off peak. going on a Monday evening and returning Thursday evening.

The way I've done it in the past has been to get a Conisbrough to Mexborough single, a Mexborough to Leamington Spa advance, and a Leamington Spa to Oxford advance. The best prices I get for this are as follows:

Conisbrough-Mexborough: £3.00
Mexborough-Leamington Spa: £14.30
Leamington Spa-Oxford: £5.00

Total: £22.30 each way, or £44.60 return.

I realise that this is already good value for a long journey (apart from the Conisbrough to Mexborough bit which is two miles if you're lucky...)

Anyone got any other potential splits which could knock some more off the price? I'm not too hopeful, but I know some of you like a challenge! The nearest I can get is Conisbrough to Chesterfield which comes in at £7.80 for a standard day single. Chesterfield to Leamington Spa is £12.30 advance, and then £5.00 for the single to Oxford. This would be £25.10 each way.

At a push I can also consider Doncaster as a departure station, or Meadowhall/Sheffield, as I can get buses or local trains to these places very easily.

Thanks in advance!

(PS - a standard open return is 91.70).

This is a journey which is quite difficult to split effectively, at least at short notice. If you want the flexibility of walk-up tickets, splitting at DBY, BHI and LMS seems to be the cheapest option - coming in at £72.80 return, a modest 21% saving.

Looking about a month in advance, splitting at Kings Cross on the outbound and at Birmingham, Derby and Chesterfield on the return gets that down to £53.90 return.
