Hi all,

Have to travel to Nottingham tomorrow for work instead of Derby. Will my Doncaster to Derby season ticket cover it? If not, how far can I get without it (and without going to Derby)?

My journey planner wants me to change at Meadowhall and jump on the Leeds to Nottingham service.

Doesn't look like it. Routeing guide says Doncaster to Derby Group is only valid on map BH, which doesn't include Nottingham. The furthest you can get on that ticket is Chesterfield.

I had assumed it would be as Sheffield to Derby is valid via Nottingham and vice versa but apparently not. Doubly annoying as it seems Doncaster to Nottingham is valid via Derby (edit: and is slightly cheaper too).

I agree with this, although some journey planners may offer Doncaster to Derby itineraries via Nottingham for the Doncaster-Derby anytime single. However, as the OP already has a season ticket, such an itinerary wouldn't be part of the contractual terms of their ticket purchase.

From a time point of view i think a change at Sheffield and a Sheffield to Nottingham ticket , Or as others have said if it calls at Chesterfield, a Chesterfield to Nottingham ticket is a couple of quid less. Then the reverse on the way home.

From a price point of view, its cheaper to go to Derby on your season and then get a Derby to Nottingham* ticket but depending on times it will take a little longer and your ticket will restrict you to going back that way meaning your journey will be longer on the way home too.

This is not a great Season Ticket, but you already know my alternative suggestion, which would be valid, as I sent you a PM about it a few days ago.

I think by rights it should be valid, as my understanding is that traditionally tickets to Derby/Nottingham from the North have been valid via the other, however the Routeing Guide is such a mess it's not surprising routes often get left out. Maybe they'll fix it now it's been posted here (though errors in the customers favour tend to get 'fixed' faster!;))

Doncaster to Derby should and had always been valid via Nottingham until whatever time they changed it, as did all fares from stations Chesterfield and north thereof.

Maybe someone fancies an FoI request to DfT?

Indeed, looking at the NRG updates thread, it has just been "fixed" by making Doncaster-Nottingham less flexible (no longer valid via Derby) rather than Doncaster-Derby more...

Typical.

Malton Seadog - I suggest you send an FOI to the DfT asking if they approved these changes, and if they did, their reasoning for doing so.

In the old days Doncaster - Derby was priced by Inter city midland mainline/cross country. While DOn - NOT was priced by Inter City East Coast. That may account for the different prices and permissions. I think you can get to Nottingham via Grantham from Doncaster, but you can't get to Derby via Grantham. The Routeing guide and pricing does still magnify the sectorised splits of thirty years ago

This does seem to be borne out by BRFares, which tells me that the any permitted DON-DBY is set by Cross Country and the DON-NOT by VT East Coast. But most of the DON-NOT fares are "via Sheffield" which is priced by EMT.

Recognising it would not currently help the OP since he has already bought his season ticket, but what if future ones were bought via one of the websites that offers season ticket sales, and allows 'via' points with it?
