Today's tour is turning into a new disaster, 37409 has shut down near Tebay!
Been sitting here for an hour. 37409 shut down, low oil pressure. The pair of 20s which were sent from Crewe to Oxenholme to rescue 70000 are now in the process of rescuing us instead!

Not a good day for other users of the WCML - and presumably for LSL who will be having to compensate their respective TOCs quite apart from their own additional costs of turning out rescue traction.

How do you reach that conclusion? The train crew on 70000 realised there was an issue, and requested the train be diverted into Oxenholme loop for examination. This prompt and sensible action did not cause any delays to other operators.
Compare that with the southbound journey when 37409 failed and blocked the Up WCML at Tebay, causing delays up to 75 minutes to various southbound services. It was the unassisted diesel which stuffed up the service, not the steam loco.

If they knew 37409 was gonna conk out like it did and where it did (which of course they didn't, but there's always such a risk with vintage diesel traction, even the generally robust 37s), maybe they should've sent the two 20s out to start with instead or had them (or another diesel, that of course hinges on if any were available) go with 409 and top-n-tail the train with it just in case of something like this happening. But all this is said with the benefit of hindsight of course and ignores the practical barriers weighing against such a plan, not least the extra fueling, crewing & pathing costs.
We all could go back and forth over what could've and what should've been done for hours, but what's done is done. Main thing LSL is dealing with now is footing all the bills this escapade has caused.

142003 is heading from Upperby back to Crewe.

LSL did do a pacer railtour a couple of years back, it was very reasonably priced, but I flagged it as a full pacer isn’t my cup of tea. They were tolerable when lightly loaded.

It wasn't too bad even with it being well loaded. Well I enjoyed it anyway
They have another pacer at Eastleigh (I think it is still there anyway) so my hope is we can have a tour with a double pacer, maybe around the North West. It'll be more popular than a peak to Scarborough, that's for sure

You could run it on Sundays every 3rd hour between Sheffield and Manchester to use the paths Northern have neither crews nor trains to fill!It wasn't too bad even with it being well loaded. Well I enjoyed it anyway

That’s exciting, great to know they are still investing and expanding. (Purely for selfish reasons, hope they acquire a depot in East Anglia… but I doubt it)

It did, picked it up on the tour that was being filmed on - a fitter had to come out and check it before they left Llandudno but it was deemed fit to proceed
