presumably they mean dated/advance tickets may be used on that route outside their stated validity.
There may also be some diversions via the S&C - if the recovery is going to take some time, AWC may be able to organise - and re-roster enough 805s and crews with the route knopwledge recentkly gained on the trial runs a few weeks ago - to do it.
Luckily, we know what we’re doing, believe it or not.
There are risk assessments in place for this exact eventuality, it was identified quickly that there were no welfare or mobility issues onboard and this is what enabled the trackside evacuation.
I did see some comment regarding why the trackside evacuation. So which is it this week on RailForumsUK, do you want passengers on the trains for hours or not?! Honestly
There was a very quick and adequate staff response with the appropriate numbers and access points to enable this to take place, so it did.
Two thoughts:
1) with all that debris on the windscreen - DON'T operate the wipers, lest they leave some serious scratches on the glass.
2) Quote from North West Ambulance service was "Fortunately, we don’t believe anyone has suffered any significant injuries. There are approximately 85 passengers on board, plus train staff who are now being evacuated from the train." But this differs from "Shabeeh Hassan, director of the hotel, says approximately 130 passengers arrived from 07:30 GMT."
So have a further 45 people from the area decided to get a free breakfast at the hotel by joining the procession of train evacuees? Or is the hotel director inflating the figures to get a bigger costs payout? Or is "plus train staff" doing some really heavy lifting here?
Regards to your windscreen wiper comment. It was already raining. They were on prior to the striking of the landslide. I very much doubt that the driver was worried about the state the windscreen was going to be in, or even stopping the wipers and more about bringing the train to a controlled stop best he could. Plus, I’m not sure scratches on the windscreen are going to be the biggest issue on the front of that train considering the front of it is missing. Im almost certain that during repairs it’ll get a new front end with a new windscreen.
Was definitely around 85 passengers on the train, plus about 10 crew for various reasons on this service. So yes, the numbers have been inflated by the hotel. I doubt for any malicious reasoning though. First responders and those there on the TOCs behalf may have also been included in that count.
Two images of the extent. Note that the landslip shown in image 2 is in the background of image 1.
Image 1 shows the full Pendolino consist viewed from the front with the landslip visible in the distance. Image 2 shows the landslip as viewed from the train.

Thanks for these; the first issue (about wipers) occurred to me because, a number of years ago, I was driving my car on the A38 dual carriageway, and passing a lorry, when its right-hand-side window shattered, covering my windscreen with toughened glass fragments - and my car's auto-sensing wipers chose that moment to operate! Cue a new windscreen as well as repaint of the bonnet.
Regarding the hotel numbers - wholly flippant on my part. I'd forgotten the emergency crews, other First Responders, and TOC/NR reps (such as MOMs etc.)

Sorry - I meant that, once the train is back on the track, then it might be best to clean the windscreen using some other means before operating the wipers.
Tangential question: It's being reported that there were 10 members of crew onboard the train (77 passengers, 10 crew) which seems like quite a high number? Do Avanti have early jobs out of Glasgow where people are booked pass to Preston or something?

You'd need at least 6-7 to work a breakfast train with full first class service - driver, guard, buffet steward, chef and at least 2 first class stewards, possibly 3 on a busy peak train? 3 "on the cushions" doesn't sound like a lot.
Just catching up with this (Only last night I was reading RAIB report of a Freightliner which lost it's containers in a high wind (March 1st 2008) in that area). Main thing is that the human damage is minimal. Pendolinos are fairly sturdy and safe.
However, someone claimed earlier on the thread, this will be closed for several days? From he photos, there'll be significant track damage as well as infrastructure (OLE). Hopefully all up and running again, soon.

No pantograph car derailed so expect minimal damage to OLE. Track will be an issue but the amount of work to reopen with a heavy TSR is surprisingly low. Just depends exactly what the damage is.
I may have missed it and somebody has alread posted it, but the design and orientation of the National Grid transmission tower visible in the second picture suggests the landslip location is here (link is to Google Maps).
I share everyone's relief to learn that there were no injuries, and I think it's interesting that this is the second major incident involving a Pendolino coming off the rails in Cumbria. Thankfully I don't see this unit being scrapped, but I still thought it was an interesting coincidence, especially when just last night I chose to read up on the Grayrigg derailment. Regardless, how long can we expect 390 117 to be out of action before it gets fixed up?
Yes seen a lot of those post Carmont, aren’t they supposed to send warnings when movements occur ? so it’ll be interesting to find out if anything was received.

I would assume a long time, given 395008 derailed almost 1 year ago and still hasn't been repaired, and this has similar damage on visual inspection to the 390. It may not be as long as a year, but the fine detail won't be known until it's been cleared from site and fully inspected.

There is more rain forecast in the area over the next few days, which may cause more landslips. If this happens, then the reopening will take longer as more repairs are required, though at least with the line shut there's no danger of a train hitting any subsequent ones that emerge in this time.
I don't know the answer to that, but you can see the 80mph PS sign (northbound approaching the summit) in the photo of passengers walking on the track.
From the SA the 80mph at Shap extends for a mile over the summit - presumably because of both vertical and lateral curvature.
It's 90mph (also with no EPS) over Beattock summit.
Might the differential in passenger numbers be that there were 85 reserved seats on departure from Glasgow, but there may have been walk-ups both there and at Carlisle?
And yet we can't have any more of them because they don't meet modern crashworthiness standards...
I think it has more than proved itself to be a very solid design!!!

True, but at the same time the West Coast Main Line timetable can be quite volatile when a unit goes out of action. When 390 033 derailed it left a hole that had to be filled by the Pretendolino, so even if it takes a long time I hope that Avanti have sufficient units to cover the loss.
