Reports coming in of a derailed train near Shap Summit up Goods loop.

Looking like 1R22 0428 from GLC to EUS

Incident: Penrith | National Rail

major disruption between Carlisle and Preston. Find details of all current incidents on National Rail Enquiries.

A derailed train between Penrith and Oxenholme means all lines are blocked. Trains running between Carlisle and Preston may be delayed by up to 120 minutes or cancelled.

Major disruption is expected until the end of the day.

Avanti West Coast are advising passengers do not travel north of Preston.

Info to add incldues

6C72 came in from the Penrith direction and did a set-back using the points to enter Shap Quarry. That was the last and ONLY train in that direction before 1R22 since the sleeper at about 0330, as far as I can see

No injuries on board (source is Avanti's own regular internal messaging so open access to most staff).

Great news. I was worried that with potentially such high speed with potentially pointwork in the area (depending on exact location) that it could have been really nasty.

Enough emergency support going up the M6. Hopefully the news is positive. A lot of rain has fallen overnight in the area.

Was just looking at the met office radar for overnight. Some nasty 8-16mm and 16-32mm per hour bands sat over the area for a substantial part of the night.

RTT shows the train passing Shap Summit on time at 0609, then no reports after that

OTT shows the train at signal 119, just beyond Shap goods loop, and with the other (down) line showing as blocked

No other berths occupied on the up line between Carlisle and Carnforth, but the down line shown as occupied between Oxenholme and Grayrigg, (which may be an artefact of wrong line working to extricate a stranded train? - 1s30 Manchester to Glasgow is shown as stopped in that stretch at 0610, but reappears at Oxenholme forming a service back to Manchester at 0718, departing from platform 2 (the usually northbound one)

Hearing the train has managed to stay upright and National Rail are saying the line will be shut for the rest of the day with trains from South as usual terminating/starting their journey at Preston.

NetworkRail Scotland had already applied reduced speed limits on various lines in Scotland with the forecasted rain over Monday and Tuesday. The WCML was one of those routes but I didn't look up the exact location.

Good that there's no injuries. With York shut again that's going to be fun if it's not fixed by the weekend...
