I think the thing about it being everywhere was that it was one of the first few named 47/4s (and the only LMR namer at that time, the others were WR), and therefore stood out whenever you saw it from a fleet of 150-odd other BR blue 47/4s (especially as it also regularly got tarted up for Royal Train duties).
Quite possibly. I lived in the midlands in the early 80s and it did seem to be omnipresent at times. (And it’s also the first specific loco I can remember seeing, pulling into a crowded Coventry platform 3 off the Leamington line)
