Indeed it is! The next clue was going to hint at the mountain in the background, which is Mont Blanc.

Rüdesheim it is. The vine-covered slopes and terraces were a bit of a clue I reckon. Slightly unusual station, just one platform on a twin-track line, and they don't let you onto the platform until the train is due.
The yellow sign on the left that I partially blacked out is for road vehicles heading to the ferry just there to Bingen on the other bank of the Rhine

Thought about it, but it looks nothing like a SNCF station, none of the classic clocks and the departure board is not blue

My first instinct is Poland, since the station design feels familiar. The lattice OHLE supports are similar to those recently used in Kraków on upgrades, and the sandy soil beyond the end of the platform fits too. Unfortunately I can't quite make out the name plate at the bottom of the signals (it's similar in size and layout to those shown on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Polish_railway_signalling ) and I can't make out any contact wires to see if they are dual 3kV DC contacts or not. Maybe my hunch is wrong, and many new stations around Europe look similar.

I went on an interesting little sideline trying to find which countries use 2-wire grounds on high-voltage pylons, as shown with the distinctive 'horns' on the one in the photo, but my research skills haven't narrowed that down either.

This took some research, but in the end it was the architecture that helped me out.

The concrete structure in the background looks like a bridge, but when you peer into the shadow you realise that it's actually a large deck which spans the tracks. That means it must be (or I think it is) Metz Ville, which has a car park on the deck above the stracks. That would suggest this is an old photo of a Paris - Frankfurt express. This photo on Flickr helped me.

D'oh! I was so focused on cropping out another sign I missed that one. But the distinctive asymmetrical piers will be unmistakable to anyone who knows the station.
