For the past two nights there have been two overnight test diagrams operating on the ECML between York and Darlington (beginning as 5Q08 and 5Q58 from Merchant Park). One is presumably 802207 continuing battery tests as earlier in the week. Does anyone know whether the second has been a new Class 810 testing on electric power or whether it is something to do with the two Class 805s (06 and 07) back at Newton Aycliffe (presumably not an 807 as no booked drag to and from Darlington)?

The other photos show USB Type A sockets. That *is* something that would've made sense in 2019 or 2022 but I think will be looking pretty quaint by 2026
USB A sockets are still pretty standard though. Ideally you'd have both A and C sockets though.

One of the things here is the USB A is limited to 500mA at 5 Volts. USB C can provide far more current and voltage, which gets back to overall load issues, and folks causing the circuit to trip. A coach full of folks charging their phone via USB A is one thing. A coach load of folks running their MacBook laptops powered via USB C is an entirely different thing!

How many people actually use the trains sockets to charge?

Ever since the 8Xx fleets started, and the charging caused phones to stop working, freeze or have a mind of its own, I purchased a power bank.
If travelling my train or bus I now take that with me.

Doesn’t mean the USB-C ports do provide more, just that the USB PD etc. standards mean they can provide more.

IC trains should have BS1363s as a minimum though. Some people on these do need to be doing real work.

I always do when travelling anything more than 20 minutes.
My power bank only ever comes out when the power sockets on the train aren't working and there's a risk of me running out of power.

Not experienced any problems of this type, including on an LNER 800 on Diesel earlier this year.

Diesel there fine, when on electric, ever since they were introduced when phone plugged in, can never use phone while charging, and I know it’s a complaint made frequently certainly to LNER.
Something to do with frequencies and LNER try to blame people using old chargers.

Thread attached below shows people still suffering the issue!

The purple walls looks great and its looks like they use different shades of purple which i guess helps denote whether your in standard or first?

anyhow looks far better than the basic cheap looking wood used on the other 8xx sets

Its a shame Avanti couldnt have taken a leaf out of EMR book with their own 8xxs. So bland and dull

Purple will date and might be hard to change. Orange in HST First Class (see photo above) was very fashionable around 1980, tastes change!

Those First class seats look remarkably unluxurious.
does anyone ever use coat hooks - you can’t actually use them and sit in the seat underneath can you?
i have now sat in the 1st class seats on 810004. they are certainly not the most padded - but they are much more padded than they look. in terms of *shape* (but not padding) i prefer the standard class seats, which i have also sat in on 810004.
Where are the power and USB sockets in third standard class?
iirc from yesterday there's one power socket + 1 usb-A between each set of two standard class seats, at the bottom.
Not entirely convinced by the tray tables in standard. Will a laptop fit on those?
small laptops will be fine. gary the DJ with his 16" macbook pro will struggle.

The cab however was a drivers dream! So spacious and airy and much lighter than the 222. Felt cocooned by screens though with the dash being quite high in the window.

Wow first time in a while I've heard an Existing driver at any toc praise a new fleet in that department :D

To be fair I literally sat in the seat and had a nose round the cab, there may be many issues yet to come!
Isn’t it literally the same cab as the other 8Xx variants for the layout of the desk etc?

Hopefully not with the song and dance of overlapping alarms and levers you need to do to turn that cab on.
Funny, never seen any levers in the cabs of 8XX. Plenty of little switches though.

I’ve no idea, only driven the 222 previously so I suppose anything is an upgrade. Are there any big changes in the cab compared to 80X do you know?

Little bit of Zumba never hurt

Haha fairs, they look so far like solid units, might even if fate has it be driving one of them ;)

Honestly no idea, you would think not, as the can on other variants would have been agreed with Aslef driver reps at other TOCs.

Did you find the high dash affected forward visibility much?
The simulator has appalling forward visibility for those of us under 6ft tall, but I'm hoping it's just the way the seat is mounted in the room.

It’s hard to say as I didn’t actually move it and it was a hop in hop out look, but the nose felt longer than a 222, definitely harder to judge where the coupler would be. I jumped straight in a 222 after I’d been in the 810 and it confirmed what I’d thought, the 222 seemed stubby compared to the 810. I’m under 6ft too but the seat and pedal had loads of movement. Just felt a bit like you had blinkers on with the screen ‘walls’ rather side of you.

2nd man's seat is going to be an issue. As it does not move away from it's mounting position. Yes it will swivel 90 degrees for access. I sat in it and as an instuctor/mentor/route learner, you will have a great view of the bulkhead that wraps around to the windscreen. Not sure if this is an issue with the 800s? But guessing having the front end redesign and smaller screen means the 2nd man's seat positioning has been an afterthought. Can see this being a point of contention from day one.

2028 for introduction then!

On a serious note, surely your driver union team have been involved throughout with the design and layout of the cab? I thought they were always involved early on to agree that everything is acceptable?
