Next LM 172 arrives 6th June.
Next 2 will be 13th June straight to Worcester. Worcs drivers have been told
they will be handling between Worcs & Glos. I believe they are not happy as
they would prefer to handle on Snow Hill lines to Stratford/Leamington as
that is what the units will be doing + weekend Herefords as per existing 150
diagrams.

As part of LM's possible 2nd batch of 172s, I'd like to see some 4 car 172s. These would be designated 172/4; have end gangways; 2+2 seating throughout; and possibly 1st class seating in the first section of the first carriage (thus giving a formation DMC-MS-MS-DMSL).

No, there's much more flexibility in getting a "top up" order for 172346-349 and 172223-229.

I was only thinking that because a single 4 car unit will have greater seating capacity than 2 2 car units as space isn't uses up by driving cabs ;)

Given the corridor connections on these units, the cabs don't take up a huge amount of room (one reason drivers prefer non-corridor-connected units)

To be honest once they have all their 172s, LM should go to the back of the queue for new DMUs there are others much more in need of new DMUS for differing reasons such as Northern, Arriva Trains Wales First Great Western (ex Wessex Service) could do with extra units to replace Pacer, 150 and 153 fleets. Transpennine need them as they dont have enough units and should Northern Hub come to fruition... Give some to NXEA to release the 170s and more importantly the 156s for cascade elseswhere. London Midland shoud not receive any more new trains for quite awhile IMHO,

However if we werent ordering on merit and just in a fantasy world 4 car 172s would be quite welcome at XC to replace the 2 and 3 car 170 fleet (may have to get some 3 car ones for Stansted runs though) and also East Midlands might want some for Liverpool to Norwich. Possible genuine cases for 4 cars also with first class and not on a local operator

I have already said this this weekend, but when they imminently electrify the Uckfield ;) (as if...), you are quite welcome to all our 171/8s. :D

Living in Yorkshire, I'd rather we electrified routes like Uckfield/ Goblin (and got our hands on your nice modern DMUs), since I can't see any routes in Yorkshire being electrified in the next twenty years.

Are LM keeping any 150s, if so which ones?

They want to, even though the 172s were intended to replace them

Ahh, I got confused as it looks like a standard Turbostar.

This sub-fleet is going to be strange then with two significantly different looking trains.

I don't see why they didn't make Class 171's a sub-class of the 170, then the Chiltern ones another sub class, then make the London Midland ones 171's. Surely they will be soon running out of number classifications?

171/7s and 171/8 were delivered 170/7s and 170/8 respectively with BSI couplers but were retrofitted with Dellner couplers so they could couple with 377s in an emergency. They were renumbered so there was no confunsion

I didn't think they were all delivered as 170. I was, for instance, under the impression that 171/8s were delivered as such. But then it's a minor point.

171s can't interwork with 170s at the current time, but obviously there is no need. At all.

and the 172s, whether with or without corridor connections, are technically quite different to 170s- different transoimission, different bogies, and various technical differences to the rest of the unit.

Have 171s ever worked with 377s?
