Wiki says there will be some LM 2-car sets (172/2), are these the optional second batch or are they included in the numbers of sets currently under disscussion?
As far as I know, the 172/2s are part of the confirmed order and are to be built after the /3s

The current order is for 69 vehicles made up of 15 three car and 12 two car sets, there was an option to add on a further 26 vehicles to the contract.

I am not aware that this option has ever been taken up which is why I queried an earlier post regarding building another 26 vehicles. It would be nice if they did but I'm not holding my breath.

I don't if it is true but all the 172/3s have been built according to Today's Railways but does anyone know if any 172/2s have been built.

A vveiw of 172331 leaving Stratford upon Avon on 27th April 2011 on it's return to Tyseley. They already look at home.
--- old post above --- --- new post below ---

I do feel that the criticism of bombardier is wrong. Yes they are under pressure to produce a lot of vehicles to dead lines which are well over with some. The down turn in the world economy hasn't helped as we all now.
Bomardier build there products on our door steep so we all are aware and see problems eg the issues with LUL's 172's and the teething problems 172331 had at Old Dalby.

In europe they have more room, there own testtracks and are away from the eyes of the railway press.

The Bombardier factory in Derby is clean and well regimented. I once went to a BMW production line and Derbys is on a par.

Someone touches on something from Todays Railways which talks about all 3 cars being complete. This may well be true. On my visit to Derby back in Feburary I was in the factor as the 4 Chiltern 172 was being lowered on to its bogies. I asked the question 'How long does it take to build a unit. The answer was about 5 days from bolting the first bits together till the static tests. 172333 was being started that day in front of me.

There were engines and bogies in the factor with 172333/334 and 211 on. The last could of been reallocated to a differant unit.

Using all this maths then Todays railways could off been right in saying all 3 cars are built. They might not be fitted out inside yet but even if they are LM probably can't except them all till they start there driver training program properly as they don't have anywhere to put them.

Hopefully LM will take the option on the other 26 vehicles as like will all lines the only way they will continue to grow is if they run more trains. The Snow Hill lines has overcrowding isses like everywhere else.

LM with network rail are currently looking to extend where possible all platforms to 6 car lengths so maybe are hoping to run all trains as 3 or 6 car. The extra vehicles would allow the 2 car sets to become 3's.

They may also be used on the Bedford to Bletchley line and Nuneaton to Coventry (Leamington) Line. Even the Hednesfords in the long term so 26 Vehicles could end up being maybe even a bigger order than the current one.

Look at the 13 170 2 cars that Central Trains ordered who was to know that they would end up with 33 2 and 3 car sets and 20 others from other tocs.

Do they? You make it sound like the press are all standing outside Bombardier trying to get a picture...

And you don't need a picture to prove it is late so that is irrelevent ;)

I bet they would have trouble. The fences are high and they won't let you take photos inside to works!

I am planning to stop off in Birmingham on the way to London at the end of August. I have already decided to ride a London Overground class 172 then. I hope enough London Midland ones are in service by then too. I reckon on proceeding to London Marylebone on Chiltern Rail so might just ride examples from all 3 operators that weekend!

You won't get a 172 in Birmingham. They will work High Wycombe (?) stopppers only.

Maybe he means he'll take a LM 172 to Dorridge or Leamington, then Chiltern (168) to High Wycombe; then Chiltern 172 to Willesden Junction?? - onto a Overground 172 on the NLL

Chiltern don't stop at Wilesden Junction and LO 172s only run on GOBLIN from Gospel Oak into Barking but do not stop at Wilesden Junction.

Thank you for notifying me that Chiltern 172s will only run as far as High Wycombe. I was hoping they might run the fastest Birmingham-Marylebone services.

I would probably ride an LM class 172 to Dorridge, or even a local service, say from Stourbridge to Birmingham or Solihull. I acknowledge that I shall probably miss out on a Chiltern one, but shall ride a LO class 172 locally on the August Bank Holiday, potentially from Harringay to Gospel Oak.

I thought most of the 172 services will only run as far as Gerrrads Cross?

They were always intended to run on specific short distance stopping services, utilising their higher acceleration. This was intended to allow the longer routes to run faster in the new timetable, by dropping stops in the London area.

I think that is still the eventual plan for later this year...

Chiltern 73rd track access supplementary said:
Improved Birmingham services are delivered by a combination of higher line speeds and
changes to stopping patterns. Faster new Class 172 rolling stock for the inner London station
calls south of Gerrards Cross facilitate some of the additional capacity, by enabling an
increased number of train paths to run with main line services having fewer station calls. The
timetable structure has been designed to maximise capacity by running the new class 172 units
on stopping services to Gerrards Cross and West Ruislip enabling the majority of other services
to run non stop to Gerrards Cross or beyond.

I did see that (?) in your earlier response. The other factor that supports Gerrrards Cross is the infrastructure changes that have happened there already. What the timetable suggests is that over the course of the day High Wycombe will no longer be the destination for so many services.

Just seen a picture in some in house LM company newsletter dated mid March captioned the interier of 172333 so must of had seats in for a couple of months.
Also spoke to some who said that a few faults had been discovered at derby with 172333 whilst on tests there but that 333 - 335 were complete and subject to completion of a couple of modification bought about from the testing of 331 & 332 should be with LM in early June for fault free mileage runs. If all goes to plan 5 days up and down from Tyseley to Stratford should be 1000 miles.

Been informed today that the Chiltern 172s will not be ready in time for their supposed debut on Monday. No date announced for their actual introduction yet.

Just have to say that I love the 172's and can't get enough of them. They really are a pleasant environment to travel on and such on improvement over the 150's in terms of comfort. The people of the West Midlands and the inner Chiltern line are certainly in for a treat when theirs get going ;)

Have you ever done 171s? Does anyone think they compare well (are they, perhaps, exactly the same <D)?

Yea I make the effort to get a 171 (or any diesel train I can find in London!)occasionally. They are more or less the same as a 170 or 377 internally, but with rock hard seats! The 172 has a pretty much all new interior and looks and feels alot fresher and airier being a suburban unit. Very soft seats too...........:D

Will the Chiltern units have toilets?, or be the to the same spec as the LO ones?

Yeah the Chiltern units have a toilet fitted.

The 171s are exactly as you say; they're just like a 170.

Three 172 units reported passing Banbury this evening at around 19:00, 26th May, presumably as one train, en route to Wembley for official delivery to Chiltern. Still not certain when they might enter service.

Cheers, Geoff
