I hope the 175s have a future life somewhere: they are very comfortable to ride on as a passenger.
Id they are one of my favourite units and are one of the nicest to travel on I do think they still have a few years left in them if the corrosion can be sorted out once they are out of use.

I agree that they are nice to travel on. Sadly, it seems that the potential cost of the corrosion repairs will count against them. Reportedly, no other TOC has shown interest in taking them on so the ROSCO has no incentive to fund the repairs.

Salty air I think has done it or Alstom used lower quality steel when built its a shame the corrosion looks too serious to repair wonder if anyone at Alstom has a pic showing how bad it actually is assuming Chester isnt maintaining them as much now they are under CAF ownership

No protection really applied when the units were built at Washwood Heath. I was under the impression though that some work had taken place when the units were overhauled at Widnes.

Sounds familiar... given the 180s also have major corrosion issues resulting in one of the EMR ones running as a four car for months...

175002 & 175005 now in storage at Holyhead ahead of being fully withdrawn.
175008 at Chester after fire
175101 at Wilmslow sidings (with 175107) after fire on 101.
175111 at Longsight with parts stripped.
All others are out in service or on scheduled maintenance.

In addition to the question from @william.martin above, from memory there are 6 units - 004, 005, 006, 101, 109, 115 - whose formations are all jumbled up compared to when new.

Does anyone know if they will need to be put back in their original formations before being sent off lease?

005 already is off lease so maybe that answers your question.

I do like travelling the 175s but they are too short with 2 or 3 carriages.

Sadly the 197s won't be an improvement in that respect, at least on the North Wales - Manchester services.
According to the since hidden December 2023 plans, Manchester services will be a minimum of 3 cars (apart from the first and last service of the day), and up to 5 cars in the peaks. There will also be an additional service on the North Wales coast each hour providing extra capacity. This is only made possible by the introduction of the 197s, so yes they will be an improvement.

What I always find sad, is when whole units go for scrap, and no one thinks they have good comfortable seats etc that can be reused.

Also don't seem to get bogies or engines being reused these days. Even though they are designed to be demountable for maintenance.

To me seems bonkers if a 22-23 year old unit gets the good parts scrapped, because of corroded bodyshell, whilst units from the 1980s soldier on, and places like Bristol have insufficient serviceable units to avoid short formations virtually every day.

Unsure about North Wales to Manchester but we have been told Swansea-Manchester will be 5 carriages once all the 197s are in service.

Also they are new trains so hopefully they will be an improvement in comfort for passengers. I will know within the next 72 hours when i take my first trip on a 197 (fingers crossed!) I hope it will be worth the wait.

I understand that North Wales to Manchester will remain as 3 carriages, except for a few peak trains (and those will only be strengthened east of Chester). So it's actually a reduction in capacity, by something like 25 seats per train. Obviously there's a Liverpool to Llandudno service which will take some of the heat off on the coast, but we all know how running small trains more frequently went for VXC/AXC following Operation Princess.

Sit over a bogie for the full CAF ride quality experience. The seats are better than on 80x but that's not a high bar to set.

What's the ride quality like?, seems like it's a bit hit or miss from what I have seen on youtube but I don't trust a lot of the online reviews.
Edit Should say is it terrible compared to the 175?

Class 175 ride quality is not particularly good, worse than 158s and not much better than 185s or 195s.

The 185s ride brilliantly, and the 175s are like a Mk3 with an underfloor engine in the coach. 158s are the gold standard for DMU comfort, they blow even a 444/450 EMU out the water thanks to their heavy bogies so an unfair comparison to make. Their ride is second to none as a result.

1V94 0805 Holyhead to Cardiff is operated by 158823 this morning.

It is nominally a 3-car 175 along the north wales coast growing to 5 cars at Chester.

Every morning I'm treated to 4 annoucements detailing where the "front three carages" stop.

That one never gets to Hereford with 5 cars. It's a booked 175/1 diagram.

I feel for the passengers sitting in the imaginary "rear two carages calling at Wrexham General, Ruabon, Chirk, Gobowen, Shrewsbury, Church Stretton, Craven Arms, Ludlow, Leominster, Hereford, Abergvaenny, Cwmbran, Newport and Cardiff Central. This service is operated by Transport for Wales."

It wouldn't be so annoying if the system didn't also run though the identical list of stops for the "front three carages"

Four times, twice in English, twice in Welsh. Every weekday morning. <ARRGH>

Ever since I said 158s were rare covering on the Marches/West Wales they seem to be popping up everywhere! There was one on the the 0848 Swansea to Manchester (from Milford Haven) this morning.

158s are definitely by far the best out of the Sprinters.

In fairness if a 175/1 turns up and not a 150 for the 4 hours plus from West Wales to Manchester it can announce what it likes.

The 158s are good, but if there are college students for Hereford or Shrewsbury then they dont quite have the space of a 175/1.

Even a pair of 153's is preferable to the 150 (Appreciate that might be open for discussion, but the 150s do not have the luggage options in my experience)

I do think some of the members of this site are particularly sensitive to things like ride quality, and often neglect the fact that there is an element of subjectivity in there too. The same goes for seat comfort, for some firmness is a positive and for others a negative.

Some of the comments that new trains get on here would embarrass the Princess from the fairytale involving a pea!

Yes the only downside to a 158 is they are all two car so can get very busy on journeys usually formed of a 3 car 175. That one I saw this morning looked quite full.

I think a pair of 153s is marginally better than a 150 as I find them a bit more comfortable probably because they are used on more longer distance routes like HOWL than the 150s are (or at least are meant to be)
