Yes. It is totally normal and exactly like it is at the momentIsn't that normal tho? Like i can't just buy a SWR ticket and use it on a GWR train...?

No, because it would be cheaper if you booked on a specific train at a quieter time.So making rail journeys much more expensive, just like I said it would.
Yeah that makes sense. I wonder tho about just buying a ticker for a train leaving in 5 minutes, That will probably be full farePerhaps like an airline? If you book an advance for a particular service then it is priced competitively. If it is an open ticket then it will be "full fare".
I think that is something of an assumption at this pointSo making rail journeys much more expensive, just like I said it would.
I want to be able to turn up at the station and just get on a train! How am I supposed to know what train I’m going catch if I don’t know what time I’m going to get to the station?Well I assume that you'll need to know what train to catch before heading on a journey...
if the single tickets are half price and if I might not need to take the return, that would mean me saving money
I don’t want to book a train! No, because it would be cheaper if you booked on a specific train at a quieter time.
You’re complaining about price differentials, which already exist just via Anytime Tickets, Off-Peak and advance tickets instead. It’s the same thing.
We have peak, off peak and advance now. That is three, not two. Advance tickets are sold at a variety of prices. I am guessing that this pricing will be mainly around advance tickets - but lets see what happens when we get the detailWe have peak and off peak, that is two. Now we’ve got to have hundreds!
Haven't we had advance for a while now? I'm pretty sure I've bought a train ticket well before the scheduled date...We have peak, off peak and advance now. That is three, not two. I've been buying them for decadesHaven't we had advance for a while now? I'm pretty sure I've bought a train ticket well before the scheduled date...
Like now…There wasn’t be any flexible tickets will there, not unless you’re prepared to shell out for an expensive anytime ticket……
So pretty much the only things that're changing are:I've been buying them for decades
Well, I might be wrong, but that seems to be what is implied. This makes the most logical sense to me. Thanks man!
YesSo pretty much the only things that're changing are:
- That trains tickets will shift depending how much much in demand the trains are
- that return tickets could be scrapped with singles being much cheaper
I don’t want to have to faff about buying tickets at the end of a day out! I want to buy one Return ticket and be set for the day!Trains tend to be regular... so just buy the next available ticket for your journey on train line...
How is that when there are off peak tickets?Like now…
There is the minor additional administrative work of buying two tickets instead of one though, that’s the only downside I can really think of.So pretty much the only things that're changing are:

On the tube, you don't tend to buy returns, you faff with tickets will journeying and its quite convenient imo. It seems to me that the government wants this to be nationwideI don’t want to have to faff about buying tickets at the end of a day out! I want to buy one Return ticket and be set for the day!

Many thanks, I found it rather interesting. I look forward to seeing what happens, and more crucially, when.![]()

Interesting. I didn't read that into it at all. Although there isn't much detail.
Except no one buys paper tickets on the Tube do they…….On the tube, you don't tend to buy returns, you faff with tickets will journeying and its quite convenient imo. It seems to me that the government wants this to be nationwide
Bit annoying tbh. I don't take trains often but with this and project oval. I'll only need to tap my card for the only train journey I "regularly" take. Will make life a little easier I supposeThere is the minor additional administrative work of buying two tickets instead of one though, that’s the only downside I can really think of.
Then when you buy your tickets, ask for 'an X to Y anytime, and another for coming back, please'. I'm sure if you asked for a return that's what you'd get anyway.I don’t want to have to faff about buying tickets at the end of a day out! I want to buy one Return ticket and be set for the day!
That's true tbf...Except no one buys paper tickets on the Tube do they…….
Agreed. Advance tickets are sold at varying price points with pre-set quotas per service for each. With proper real-time demand driven pricing, this should be much more dynamic. It could include discounting as the time for the train approaches and there are unsold seats - but might not if the calculation is that high price walk on fares will be prevalent - I look forward to seeing the detail. The way I see it, advance fares may vary more than at present, due to competitive pricing, but walk-up fares are likely to remain the same (i.e. 'full price') and still exist.
There’s nothing stopping you asking for a single each way in the morning!I don’t want to have to faff about buying tickets at the end of a day out! I want to buy one Return ticket and be set for the day!

Very logical I must say! Then when you buy your tickets, ask for 'an X to Y anytime, and another for coming back, please'. I'm sure if you asked for a return that's what you'd get anyway.
So making it more expensive……..Then when you buy your tickets, ask for 'an X to Y anytime, and another for coming back, please'. I'm sure if you asked for a return that's what you'd get anyway.
I suppose it could be slighty more expensive for return journeys but significantly less so for singlesSo making it more expensive……..
Not if it's singles which are to be reduced in price, which is the implication. So making it more expensive……..
Not necessarilySo making it more expensive……..
