I had to laugh at Harper's comment about todays railway being a 'broken model' - it was the Conservatives who created the 'broken model' in the first place! Does anyone really trust them to put it right? They won't be happy until they have completely Ryanairified the passenger railway.

So making rail journeys much more expensive, just like I said it would.
No, because it would be cheaper if you booked on a specific train at a quieter time.

You’re complaining about price differentials, which already exist just via Anytime Tickets, Off-Peak and advance tickets instead. It’s the same thing.

Perhaps like an airline? If you book an advance for a particular service then it is priced competitively. If it is an open ticket then it will be "full fare".
Yeah that makes sense. I wonder tho about just buying a ticker for a train leaving in 5 minutes, That will probably be full fare

Well I assume that you'll need to know what train to catch before heading on a journey...
I want to be able to turn up at the station and just get on a train! How am I supposed to know what train I’m going catch if I don’t know what time I’m going to get to the station?

scrapping the return tickets could be cheaper in the long run if done right. Take this example from the ITV article
if the single tickets are half price and if I might not need to take the return, that would mean me saving money

I don’t want to book a train!

We have peak and off peak, that is two. Now we’ve got to have hundreds!
We have peak, off peak and advance now. That is three, not two. Advance tickets are sold at a variety of prices. I am guessing that this pricing will be mainly around advance tickets - but lets see what happens when we get the detail

Haven't we had advance for a while now? I'm pretty sure I've bought a train ticket well before the scheduled date...

Trains tend to be regular... so just buy the next available ticket for your journey on train line...
I don’t want to have to faff about buying tickets at the end of a day out! I want to buy one Return ticket and be set for the day!

So pretty much the only things that're changing are:
- That trains tickets will shift depending how much much in demand the trains are
- that return tickets could be scrapped with singles being much cheaper
There is the minor additional administrative work of buying two tickets instead of one though, that’s the only downside I can really think of.

On the tube, you don't tend to buy returns, you faff with tickets will journeying and its quite convenient imo. It seems to me that the government wants this to be nationwide

Interesting. I didn't read that into it at all. Although there isn't much detail.
Many thanks, I found it rather interesting. I look forward to seeing what happens, and more crucially, when.

Bit annoying tbh. I don't take trains often but with this and project oval. I'll only need to tap my card for the only train journey I "regularly" take. Will make life a little easier I suppose

Then when you buy your tickets, ask for 'an X to Y anytime, and another for coming back, please'. I'm sure if you asked for a return that's what you'd get anyway.

The way I see it, advance fares may vary more than at present, due to competitive pricing, but walk-up fares are likely to remain the same (i.e. 'full price') and still exist.
Agreed. Advance tickets are sold at varying price points with pre-set quotas per service for each. With proper real-time demand driven pricing, this should be much more dynamic. It could include discounting as the time for the train approaches and there are unsold seats - but might not if the calculation is that high price walk on fares will be prevalent - I look forward to seeing the detail.

There’s nothing stopping you asking for a single each way in the morning!

Because there still will be Anytime and a cheaper more restrictive alternative (let’s call that Off-Peak for simplicity…)
