Either way if Northerns supposed plan is to have no ex BR units by 2029 then it's a hell of a challenge to replace such a large fleet
That really will be hell of challenge. It’s going to take a lot of 195s and 331s to do that, asuming Northern go for and are able to get more 195s and 331s in time.

If Northern can’t get enough 195s and 331s in time, post BR cast offs will be needed. Cast off DMUs will be very hard to come by, but vast off EMUs might be easier.

Cast off DMUs are hard to come by...except 175s!

The only way I can see Northern introducing 175s is in the North East based at Heaton.
There's no news yet on any plans for hydrogen units to be based on Teesside, which has gone quiet in recent months.
If both were to happen they'll trigger a cascade of 156s and 158s.

If Northern do plan to have no BR Era units by 2029 could the 350/2s go to Northern to replace the 323s instead of Northern getting more 323s next year?

There is more than enough 350/2s to replace Northern’s current 17 323s as well as the extra 17 sets that are due to go to Northern next year.

The 350/2s are ment to go off lease next year as well as long as the 730/1s and 730/2s enter service next year, so the 350/2s could be available for Northern to lease and are owned by Porterbrook as are the 323s.

I imagine cost will be the issue there. They're also slightly longer than 323s which might affect whether they can be doubled up (which is one of the advantages of 323s at the moment) - I don't think their selective door operation is granular enough.

If Northern want to replace the 323s in the next couple of years (which, realistically, are only "BR era" by a tiny margin, still have some life left in them, and are nicer than the Sprinter fleet, so there might well be no need) then I would be surprised if it was anything other than more 331s.

323s first entered service in 1994, so I would say they are BR era units by more than a small margin.

I do hope the 323s are not replaced by 331s, as 323s are much nicer than 331s.

As far as I know Northern do not plan to replace the 323s any time soon. If the 323s are to be replaced by new trains something purpose built will be needed (aka not 331s).

350s could work as they are 3+2, but cost would be an issue.

Only time will tell if Northern do plan to replace their BR fleet by 2029 and what the replacement would be.

They aren't, and I say that as someone who will happily admit they have a soft spot for 323s.

331s have a more comfortable seating layout, more pleasant lighting, air conditioning, better luggage facilities (especially now that the subfleet of 323s with additional luggage racks have had them removed), less noise in the saloon, wider doorways, faster acceleration and a higher top speed, plus they still feel very modern. The 323s aren't ancient but are showing their age a bit.

I think 323s are more than adequate for the job at the moment, but unless you judge the train solely on the uniqueness of the noises the traction motors make, it's hard to argue that a 331 wouldn't be an upgrade.

If the 323s are to be replaced by new trains something purpose built will be needed (aka not 331s).
I don't think that's an issue. 331s are already seen on routes that used to be operated by 323s (and 319s, which have a similar configuration inside), i.e. Manchester Airport, Hazel Grove, and occasional appearances on Stoke, Crewe and Hadfield services. They seem to do perfectly fine.

Seating on the 323s is a rather comfy for a BR era unit, and a lot better than on 331s.

Even as somebody who would like the 323s to be replaced (and has asked for this), I just don’t want that replacement to be 331s (or at least not 331s with the ironing board seats).

323s are doing rather well on Stoke services at the moment so I can see the 323s ending their days working Stoke services.

(especially now that the subfleet of 323s with additional luggage racks have had them removed)
The luggage racks were removed as the 323s were not ment to be working airport services anymore as that was ment to be a job the 331s. (I’m glad the luggage racks on the 323s are gone btw, been on many a peak time service to Manchester on 323223, 224, 225 when they had racks and it was a nightmare).

Not since the refurbishment, which replaced the rather comfortable seat cushions with much thinner ones, effectively turning the previously quite good seats into ironing boards! They're also too narrow which isn't a problem you get on 2+2 seated stock and there is as lack of legroom.

As a commuter in to Manchester Piccadilly, I would welcome 331s on my line. The 323s are decent enough, but they are simply not as pleasant to travel on compared to any of the newer trains.

I wondered why the seats on the refurbished 323s felt rather odd when I went on one last year, as pior to 2021 I had only been on the unrefurbished 323s.

I would love to see 331s replace the 323s if the 331s didn’t have ironing board seats, like put some seats like those on the 379s on a 331 insted of the ironing board seats and that would be perfect unit.

Going to be a while before any more 195s/331s are ordered as CAF are busy with the WMT and TFW orders.

In my opinion, we also need them to not be 195s but preferably a new design. This is 2022 - we should be ordering bi-modes, with low floors for level boarding.

At a rough guess, these 2-car units
Or, and this is a bold idea, more electrification. Lime Street to Oxford road is for example not fully electrified, as it still uses DMUs, but I can't imagine it would be too much wiring to completely electrify it. They have enough EMUs for it already. Then they can remove the 150s, and move the 195s elsewhere to replace more Sprinters.

Other electrification projects can also do similar, of course.

I feel like all new trains that were ordered post 2010 should have had low floors for level boarding. I fell that any new trains Northern order must have level boarding.

That is a route (no pun intended) that the DFT will never go down because it’s too smart of an idea for the DFT.

Yes, they really should have done, but Northern seem to only want more Civity units for now. I suppose this is a bit of a shame though as it means we'll be stuck without it for another few decades.

Confirmed where?

There is no confirmation either way, but the cost of ordering new trains to completely replace the Sprinters will be more than leasing 175s and possibly extra 170s. It would be a good start to remove half of the 156 fleet (so about 25 units) and replace these with 175s, as they have a similar door arrangement - and there is the bonus of an extra coach in 16 of the 27 175s.

I don’t get why the 195s and 331s were not ordered with level boarding I really don’t.

Like for Northern level boarding would have helped to reduce dwell times even further, and the the 195s and 331s would have almost been the perfect modern unit with level boarding when combined with all the other features they have.

Wouldn't you then use those 156s to replace 150s and 153s?

Why?
You're introducing another type to the fleet, meaning extra training costs, less flexibility as the 175s can't multi with anything else, and if you're doing a straight swap you aren't even gaining much from the higher top speed. There are 156s coming off-lease at EMR, if Northern needed extra capacity those would be the obvious candidates. Not the very nice but also very complicated and unreliable non-standard 175s.

Other TOCs introduce new fleet types to an already varied fleet, I don't see why it's more of a problem for Northern than anyone else. Bringing in more 156s isn't the answer, because Northern want to remove all their Sprinters over the next few years, not add more of them!

There aren't enough 175s to replace all the 156s, so they'd need to retain some. There definitely aren't enough 175s to replace ALL the Sprinters, so again the 175s can't be the answer. This arbitrary suggestion about getting rid of BR era stock by a certain date is thus far unverified anyway, so I'm taking it with a grain of salt.

It wouldn't just be 175s though - there are 20 extra 195s currently on order and in terms of existing stock, there are potentially going to be big 170 and 185 cascades within the next few years, so Northern could lease some of these as well to replace more Sprinters. Then there is further electrification to think about - no doubt an order for extra 331s will be considered.

The mind boggles as to why they don't order some bi-mode 195s. They have a number of routes obviously suited to them - Windermere, Barrow and Southport to name just three, but as more wires go up there will be more. There will come a point when DMUs through Manchester and Leeds aren't acceptable any more, and it won't be that far off. I'd say certain in the likely 40 ish year lifespan of new stock.

Is it really not far off though? There are still DMUs operating in and out of London (not to mention Birmingham) and this looks set to continue for the time being at least. You'd think a DMU city ban will first be applied in London and then Birmingham, before anywhere else.

There are not many DMUs operating out of London. Mostly just Chiltern, who are looking at battery-hybrid conversion options so the diesels wouldn't need to run within London, plus the Uckfield which could become connectional instead.

I don't see any reason Brum would have to be before Manchester.

185s aren't exactly cheap to run, so they won't be much help to Northern from a cost reduction point of view. In fact I'll make a radical prediction here: once they leave TPE, the 185s will only find work in the UK as a stopgap solution before being either scrapped or exported.

Definitely London first, but I think Manchester would actually be second, as part of 'levelling up'. This of course would impact Northern, involving more electrification around Manchester and maybe even full electrification for some routes.

Being cynical, or perhaps just realistic - the whole Northern operation has always been done on the cheap, so Arriva and the DfT wanted to spend the bare minimum to be able to say they'd seen off the Pacers and introduced brand new trains in the North (on some routes for the first time in a generation).

Level boarding would undoubtedly have cost a lot of money to implement, so despite the huge benefits, we didn't get it.

To give some clarification regarding the discussion in another thread about the idea of 175s to Northern and the replacement of Sprinters by the end of the decade; this is the thread I first heard about the plans, with source in the first post.
