I am becoming more and more convinced that the England team has a problem with alcohol. There's nothing wrong with a having a few drinks on a night but the number of incidents that seem to be following the team of late in which alcohol has played a roll is seriously concerning.

I think that they do have a problem, yes.

I've seen it said that because modern day sportsmen and women generally don't drink when they're playing or training, when they're let off the lease, they can't handle alcohol in any quantity. Whether this is true, I don't know, but I do think that there's nothing wrong with a few pints after a match to help with the team bonding aspect.

I don't think that social media helps either. There was a time when teams could drink all night and no-one would say a thing about it, provided that they didn't frighten the horses and did their job on the next day. Now, though, there's mobile phones everywhere recording every step, and what's worse, the players themselves often record their own misdemeanours, which doesn't make sense to me at all!

There might also be an element of "they can't do anything to me if I misbehave on tour", but where they get that from, I don't know, as it's been disproved over the last few years. Ben Stokes was sent home from a tour a few years ago, wasn't he?

It's very worrying .... and I don't have a solution to it.

05:00 alarm set to catch a few hours of action. Need a good positive start. If batting first then let's hope Cook gets a respectful score

I am more and more convinced that when "allowed off the management leash", the behaviour type exhibited by certain of the England team is what is seen by those away from home at university in some of the venues where the over-consumption of alcohol is the norm. It seems that being in adulthood is forgotten by some England team players when allowed freedom by management to behave in an adult manner.

With the WACA ground at Perth in mind, the only real memory in "recent years" of a dominant batting display in an England 1st innings there was the Test Match in November 1986, when Broad and Athey opened for England and put together an opening stand of 223 in an innings total of 592-8 declared. Notable scores of Broad 162, Gower 136, Richards 133 and Athey 96. I was a much younger personage of only 41 years of age when that occurred and like Miss Jean Brodie, I was "in my prime"...:)

The Sun in your part of the world has come out with match fixing allegations. In particular this very test.
Cricket Australia CEO James Sutherland says there’s ‘no substance’ to allegations of Ashes match-fixing

CRICKET Australia chief executive James Sutherland has complete faith that the Ashes have not been compromised nor are any Australian players implicated in match-fixing activities despite an explosive report which leaked on Thursday.
Cricket was on Thursday rocked in the hours leading up to the third Ashes Test by allegations published in UK newspaper The Sun, which claimed to have evidence of bookmakers offering to sell details of fixed parts of the WACA Test.

But Sutherland remained confident that the Test and Ashes in total, as well as all players and officials involved, had not been corrupted.

Australia in all sorts of trouble. Still only have 4 wickets. We could of had 6 if we didn't have butter fingers in the slips. England have batted us well out of the game.

In a random bit of trivia it's 38 years to the day that Dennis Lillee walked out onto the WACA wielding an aluminum bat.

You say this every match and end up winning.......

Good end to the day by England after earlier setbacks. Malan got his deserved century and only of the evening session was a few overs longer Bairstow could have got one too.

England look a different side this test. Not as defensive.

Also for the first 3 days after the end of play there's a documentary on The Ashes called "Forged in Fire" airing on Channel 9. I'm sure it will be on an English channel somewhere.

It's funny, but I was at one time of the understanding that this was a "one-off" and it was the only one of it's kind.

However, when I went to Australia in 2001, I saw two - one at the Australia Institute of Sport in Canberra, and one at the museums at either the MCG or the SCG. They both claimed to be the actual bat, of course!! I asked the question about how many of them were there, and was told that there were actually quite a lot of them as it was a marketing stunt by Lillee on behalf of the manufacturers.

Mr W Pedia says "The actual bat that Lillee used is still in his possession; after the match ended, he had it signed by both teams. Brearley, realising a sales stunt when he saw one, simply signed the bat "Good luck with the sales"." Therefore, both museums are wrong .... or are they?

England in competent cricket shocker! Day one to the tourists but a long way to go.

Hazelwood and Starc were dangerous and could very easily rip though England for another 30/50 runs. 350 all out wont be quite so good as 305-4. Mind you BBC tell me England have never lost at the Waca when they've made 300 in their first innings.

Start again tomorrow as if on 0 and build from there.

Praise to the selectors who, unlike a lot of commentators, saw something in Malan that wasn't obvious when looking at his scores for Middlesex. We still have opening problems, though it's now become a question of who is to accompany Stoneman. I cannot believe that Cook can continue after the tour, but when the alternatives in Australia appear to be the (banned) Duckett or Keaton Jennings he'll have to play on for now. Bairstow fully deserved his move up the order and, as often, responded to confidence shown in him.

Anderson, in his 'ghosted' (?) column in the Telegraph yesterday appeared to imply that the England bowling coaches were as much to blame for the lengths their seamers bowled in the first innings at Adelaide as the bowlers themselves; a bit rich, I thought!

Ben Stokes, meanwhile, scored 93 for Canterbury off 47 balls, with seven sixes, and then took a catch and a wicket as his team won the 20/20 match by well over a hundred runs.

Once again, England have had a middle and lower order batting collapse. To go from a very strong position of 368-4 to 403 all out is something akin to irresponsibility.

Agreed - I hoped for 450. The tail surrendered meekly.

Pendulum may be swinging back towards Aus. England need to skittle the Aussies tomorrow?

It's similar to the way England's innings went. The pitch is a bit of a road. A few cracks but not offering all that much to the bowler. 400 plus on the board is still hard to chase down.

Although in outrageous news:

Australia? Booze free? World has gone mad.
All grounds have it these days. Normally they're in the family zones so that families don't get their day ruined by some drunk. Which is some feat given a beer is $8 at the outlet. $8.60 i think for the premium beer. You end up broke before lunch!

England MUST win the first session today or our colonial cousins will be out of sight. !8 overs till the new ball. The Smith/Marsh partnership needs to be broken before the new ball so England have a chance to get into Australia
