I think you'd want to be sitting around doing nothing if you were having the train equivalent of major heart, brain and cosmetic surgery all in one go. *Dabs eyes dramatically and not at all sarcastically at the thought of the poor little 170s being rebuilt carefully* Southern would see absolutely no benefit to the new platform extensions if they hadn't had the units now as they need so much work before then!

So what have Southern actually done with these units? They were apparently going to change them from 3 car units in to 2s and 4s but rumour has it that that is no longer happening.

Mind you bearing in mind constant cancellations on both the Uckfield Line (which isnt bad when its shut half the day) and the Marshlink due to train failures Southern passengers would rather like these 170's out on Southern lines if they are fit for use! They might be irritated of they get sent to East Anglia!

Philip Sutton, editor of Rail Exclusive, said leaves lodged in wheels often catch fire, causing damage.

Unless my understanding of this situation is incorrect, I think that is wrong. I thought that the flats were coming from poor adhesion causing flats through wheel locking. Perhaps asking the editor of a model railway magazine was not the best choice of expert:

The BBC "Anglia trains cancelled because of wheel damage caused to 'too light trains'" story is a little bizarre - if that was truly the case surely Pacers, which are the lightest (except perhaps the Parry People Mover) DMUs on the rail network, would be in even worse trouble.....

Certainly that should spell the end of the brainwave of some on here to send e144s to Anglia....

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-norfolk-34797519

Trains across the East were cancelled because lighter diesels were unable to mulch leaves, a rail expert has said.
Abellio Greater Anglia (AGA) services were affected this autumn between Norwich, Great Yarmouth, Ipswich, Felixstowe, Cambridge and Peterborough.
Philip Sutton, editor of Rail Exclusive, said leaf build up on lines created a hard surface that caused trains to skid, damaging wheels.
AGA said up to two damaged trains per day were having to be withdrawn...

Read that BBC story before.

Fire? Never heard of that. I'd place a lot of money and my right it's actually the oily residue combined with drizzle making for a very slippery railhead, the wheel can't grip whilst braking so the wheel locks up and slides along the metal causing a wheel flat that needs a trip to the wheel lathe.

That "news" story has been the butt of many jokes around today. Leaves on the wheels cause fires? Most ridiculous thing heard from the press on trains to date.

AGA website says that Cross Country will stop at Manea and Whittlesey instead, just checked RTT and it appears that this didn't happen bu the looks of things

It might not be happening on RTT, but out in the real world the 17.01 from Cambridge to New St tonight was announced as calling additionally, although the calls were not displayed on the departure screen. RTT is presumably derived from the same data source as the departure screens.

You do get some lovely sparks out the back when the wheels lock up on a 150 at 75mph at night though <D

Expect problems all next week. The short hauled set has returned to Crewe of a weeks holiday. Already the Felixstowe line is suspended £ one Norwich-Cambridge diagram is covered by a 153v170 with passengers left behind & NCFC are at home just to add to the misery. A special company conference has been organised for this afternoon. Here we go again <(

Oh crist, I heard that the loco hauled set had to go back and get various flats sorted out, so no doubt Bertie the Bus will be making a few more appearances.

Sadly the 16:58 Norwich to Lowestoft has been involved in a fatality near Oulton Broad, meaning another unit out of service for tomorrow at least :(

Please could we try out some of the 230 s. Seems to me they would be ideal for short runs ,Marks Tey-Sudbury..Ips-Felx.&.the Norwich locals that would free up some heavy duty trains to back up for shortages

Or there could be some actual proper investment rather than replacing the current stock with rebuilt light rail vehicles that are actually older than what they will replace!

Yes, but if Vivarail can build their class 230s quicker than the leasing companies can sort out a newbuild DMU order, then I would much rather that class 230s are used as a stopgap until new DMUs (if any) are ordered!

Leaves do regularly cause fires on trains fitted with brakes discs as in the autumn they build up between the disc and the wheel and when you brake the discs heat up enough to make them smoulder and burn, normally you only end up cancelling the train with smoke pouring from the wheels but if you are really unlucky the smouldering leaves will be flung from the discs and set fire to insulation on the under frame and even sometimes melt insulation on wiring.

Exactly the same stopgap logic used for the Pacers. A short term solution to a lack of rolling stock. Never underestimate the ability of the UK rail network to take the piddle.

Yeah its obviously the railways fault, I mean it wasn't/isn't like the purse strings are under state control is it!

Fine, let me rephrase that. Never underestimate the ability of the DfT to take the piddle.

East Midlands Trains has kindly agreed the loan of a 156 which should arrive Crown Point later today probably on the front (back from Ely) of a Liv-Nrw. 153314 has also come good after yesterday's incident, so things are a little brighter in East Anglia tomorrow than first predicted.

Just goes to show Ken knows best !
On local Anglia news tonight there was an item saying that prospective new franchises
are discussing using ex LT stock on Marks Tey-Sudbury
A 10sec clip showed a 230 pulling away on a test track
They should let me run the railways !

I've always said that Pacers would be perfect for both Sudbury & Felixstowe branch lines. Just a shame DMUs in this neck of the woods have to work in with other routes so you can't easily diagram them purely on these lines.

As much as it pains me to say it there would be nothing wrong with viva rails babies coming to Anglia, they could happily work an awful lot of the rural services, freeing 170's up for Cambridge/London/Peterborough runs as they were intended to do. The current situation of running 100moh capable 3 car 170s on 55mph max east suffolks is a little bit mad.

Will still need some 170s as don't forget that under the new franchise terms 4 East Suffolk services each way will be extended to/from Liverpool Street once again.

That was my thinking, should allow those services and all CBG/PBO runs from Ipswich and Norwich to be properly provided for
