There's discussion in the Goring Gap, but from a legal perspective, the railway line through an AONB is excepted from all of the AONB relevant legislation, making electrification no more challenging than on any other route.

Legislation wouldn't be the issue, it'd be the residents, believe me I live amongst them!

At the present time (without the chord) any through London to Sudbury service would have to reverse either at Colchester or away from platforms beyond the junction at Mark's Tey. A Felixstowe portion (or even Sheringham) would be operationally more convenient, but would it have the demand that Sudbury does?

Sheringham? I cant see why that would be required. If anything split at ips and send one to Low and other to Cambridge so Bury has through service, surely would be more beneficial?

There would not be any point in sending the train to Colchester to then reverse back down to Sudbury as it would make the journey longer than it is currently all for the sake of not changing trains and having a direct service? If the chord was built then yes a direct London service would be feasible but where would you join it to another service, Witham? That in itself brings other issues. You would not want to use a path to London on just a 2 car train. Realistically the current way of working is the best way without spending huge amounts on infrastructure. The benefit to cost ratio would be very low.
