I saw the 12.36 service at Norwich yesterday and it consisted of 2x 47s and three coaches, one of which was a half brake. Is this usual? surely the capacity wouldn't have been any more than a 156?

Yes this set does a number of workings between Norwich,Lowestoft and Great Yarmouth due to a shortage a dmus.

They used to have this set on standby going back to the NXEA days and used it on the Yarmouth workings when and if there was a shortage of DMUs, it did however always do the half 5 from Norwich everyday though

Now it has its own set diagram running between Yarmouth/Lowestoft and Norwich, not sure what set they use nowadays, used to be a couple of DRS 47s and AGA carriages from the GEML, however there was talk of DRS supplying the carriages and changing to 37s

I think they have had class 20s on the set as well but a long time ago

At one point they had two sets the AGA set and a DRS set but the DRS set went back due to problems

Having it's own set of diagrams for the hauled set, doesn't seem like a shortage of DMU's to me....
I'm lead to believe the 37's, aren't compatible with the dbso's that they intended to run on these workings, hence the continued working's of the 47's...

Either way, it's nice to see Mk 2's having a bit of a comeback on the National network.

Is two and a half coaches the most they can provide?

Why would you need more? It's only to stand in for a 156 after all. The BSO is coming in very handy for the excess holiday luggage this route suffers on Mondays, Fridays & Saturdays.

Certain 37s are compatible with DBSOs & where planned to operate until the plan was derailed (excuse the pun) by their hurried use on the Cumbrian Coast. Until another can be made available an agreement has been reached where AGA will use 2x37s in top&tail mode (as now with 47s) but Northern will fund the fuel costs for the 2nd loco. Driver training is almost finished apart from one days brake handling when the complete sets are available.

13:36 is diagrammed for a DMU. The short hauled set works the 12:36 if it's up & running.

How do you come to that conclusion?

If all goes according to plan the 37s will take over today starting with 2P32 17:36 Norwich-Great Yarmouth. They have been attached to the set & 47s removed after working the 07:47 ex-Lowestoft.

Excellent. Just in time for a little jaunt next week then.

It was barely two-thirds full on the 1736 ex Norwich on the Friday before the most recent bank holiday... a 153 would have been very uncomfortable, but a handful of Mk2s were more than adequate.

The layout of the Mk2 sets also works well for releasing doors and dispatching the train at various locations with short platforms, whilst maximising capacity.

What is the latest diagram of the short set, thought its was supposed to run constantly all day

Seems a big gap between 07:47 & 17:36

There are normally more workings, but I gather today has mainly been one of testing and so on.

There is a useful Short Hauled Set gen group on Facebook which, whilst it contains a lot of personal banter between crews, enthusiasts et al, has some useful nearly-live info.

I believe there is also some information on the Frequently Requested Diagrams thread.

37405 and 37425, working in top and tail mode, made their debut on the Anglia Norwich-Yarmouth passenger circuit yesterday.

Boy they are impressive. Passed then several times today. Both locos powering & thankfully not an eco-friendly driver in sight :p

What's the advantage of using 37's instead of the 47's?

From an operational point of view, rather than pleasing enthusiasts!
