My first post on here for a while because I've been behaving myself... Had a trip out to Rails of Sheffield today because Bachmann's Charter Mk1s have started to arrive. Managed to resist the temptation to get an Accurascale 89 to haul them, they'll have to make do with a 31 or 37!


Just the buffet cars have been released so far.

That's a fantastic fleet you've got there!

Being honest, given my space constraints buying any coaching stock at all is a bit daft... but the charter Mk1s are something I've wanted in model form since childhood so when they were announced I couldn't say no. Even if they just sit on a shelf looking pretty rather than being run!

Rather quicker than anticipated after ordering, the Bachmann E4 is here! Shown here with the Rapido E1 - just need an E6 to go with them now really...

I resisted the '89 and got a NSE 104 instead. Memories of riding them on the GOBLIN long before electrification.... I even remember semaphore signalling on some of the route; e.g., Leytonstone High Road. I've head the roof vents are oversize but I can live with that

My GETS haul for this year consisted of :

A Bachmann N class Mogul for £70 (looks pretty much like New Old stock) and another Lord Nelson for £50. This time in Southern Green to match the Malachite liveried rolling stock I've somehow acquired. I can run a Bulleid multidoor 3-set joined to a Maunsell S&D 3-set, maybe with a parcels van on the rear.

A quick squizz at the Clark Railworks stand turned up a few items.

Three Bachmann mk1s in green, a BSK, a CK and a BG. I'm on the lookout for another BSK to make a 3-set

A Clark Railworks Demountable tank wagon. While on the pricey side, these are all metal and phenomenal items. I wonder what they'll do next.

The Hornby 59' Bulleid sets are like rocking horse poo - well, mainly the CKs (the brakes have been cheap at Kernow for some time). They are very nice coaches though - Sounds like a nice potential rake!

Yes I bought a full set a few years ago. There was only one CK in the whole shop even then so I had to research the set numbers etc.

I found a full set second hand at a small model shop online a year or two ago as well, and for a stupidly low price. I may renumber in course to one of the 59' sets allocated to Central region work on the Oxted line - the Hornby ones are all Southern - Western area based sets IIRC.

If I can find another CK, then the brakes at £17 or so are a no brainer.

Yes they are. Possibly a S&D theme there. I know they operated over the S&D. I might see if I can find a BR era set as well. That way I can put them behind a Standard 4 with a parcels van on the back.

I was at Rails again this afternoon, picking up a FO from the Bounds Green charter rake. Unfortunately this time I had some savings burning a hole in my pocket too. Was very tempted by the 89 but went slightly more sensible and stuck to DMUs. The Mk1s will just have to make do with 37430.
Was impressed with the Heljan 104s, unfortunately they only had a 3-car set in blue & grey which was beyond my means as well as being a bit too long- so it would end up running without the centre car most of the time anyway. Could have gone for NSE but I've already got a 108 in NSE and having two "foreign" liveried units would be pushing it a bit!
So I decided to go for the Departmental Derby Lightweight "Test Unit Gemini" set instead, just to add a bit of colour to the layout!

The Hornby Southern Suburban 1938 coaches R4378

I've been after this pack for two years. The R4378 Southern Suburban 1938 Coach pack to supplement the T9 and 3 Maunsells. It was literally only available for a year.

The T9 I have previously suffered from Mazak rot in the motor mount, a replacement was fitted by Hornby themselves and it ran really smoothly after. A couple of parts need reattaching but that's no big problem. It became my first DCC fitted loco.
After two years of having to hold off due to lack of funds or finding it was unavailable. I almost had to buy equivalent coaches and get them professionally renumbered. This set completes one of my rakes which once I'm up in the loft will form one of the main 'scenic' trains running. If I switch to steam then it'll come up from the fiddle yard and take the place of an equivalent Mk1 Blue/Grey set.

Oh, that diecast bodied 90th anniversary A4 is gorgeous. That sheen on the metal body, takes the livery up to another level. Wonderful stuff. I must resist...

It has been a while since I added to my collection of models representing the coaches and wagons at the KWVR (too busy buying 37s???), but I have managed to acquire a Mermaid. While ready to run examples tend to go for silly money, this kit-built example was at a price I was comfortable with:



So I've now been able to put together a representative p-way train, anticipating the return of the Rat in the New Year...



If I can get hold of a second Dogfish, that would be wonderful, and complete the set.

So my rake had either a twisted chassis, or a wonky hopper-to-chassis alignment. Sometimes, both!

15-16 years-old me, big meat-hook fingers, small patience-level.
Even now - evidenced on your workbench thread - Cambrian kits are very good.
In the mid-1980s, they and the Peco Wonderful Wagons 14t tanks were joyous; far superior to r-t-r.

Kit-building is an area of the hobby I really want to investigate, if only to teach myself a bit of discipline and patience!
The hard part is finding a kit that suits my modelling era, as most kits seem to be aimed at earlier periods.

That goes without saying Seriously though, the sound version is a very sensible purchase for performance reasons, as it includes a stay-alive, so well worth the extra cost when working on a layout with lots of points like mine.

This should keep me out of trouble during the first few weeks (or months!) of 2026!
