Abergele down platform will close in the very near future, the 15mph loop removed and the station extended outward to the 85mph main line. Then it will open again. So technically, Abergele! ;0)

Do we know what the current progress is with Marsh Barton and Edginswell stations? Either are more than likely to now be 2018 openings.
Wikipedia still has Edginswell merely as a "proposed" station. As for Marsh Barton Wikipedia says construction to start early this year with planned opening for December this year.

No. IIRC The Swanage Railway will be running through the station, and using the sidings to the east of the station [.....]
I thought those sidings were OOU nowadays? Some photos I have from 2013 show that the crossover at the east end of Wareham station was missing some track. However the platforms at Wareham both have bi-directional signalling and there is also a crossover between Wareham station and Worgret Junction.....

..... so my guess is that trains from Swanage will start from / terminate at Platform 1 at Wareham.

Out of interest, to what purpose?

Wow four stations opening all year. Gosh it's great to see how our railways are expanding.
I remember when the Kenilworth reopening campaign started over 40 years ago. Finally it may happen.
Haven't network rail been building Ilkeston station for around three years now? When NR are on the job you certainly get action.
They have been renovating belper station for at least four years. Havemt got very far though.
I know I'm being very cynical, but if the railways were really doing well then we may see a bit more activity.
The TOCS aren't interested in new lines and stations as it eats into their profits.
This is the problem with private companies running a social service. Their aims and objectives are diametrically opposite.
The TOCS primary loyalty is to the shareholders and all else is secondary. This is why our railways are in such a mess.
And if I ran a large business my main aim would be to make profit. The sytem is at fault. The TOCS are just doing their job.
And that is to maximise profit at the expense of all else.
Sadly it's a little more complex than that become the TOCS are financed by the taxpayer.
And that's yet another inherent contradiction within the current system.
I'm impressed four stations are opening. It's boom time for passengers and in kenilworth they can make a cake for the opening and date it 1975 to 2017. Fourth plus years must be a record for getting a station reopened.

Thanks for the sort of update then. Edginswell seems to have gone a little quiet after the car park wrangling, but it's good to hear Marsh Barton will be potentially opening this year.

Incidentally, does anyone know the current progress of Reading's Green Park station? There seems to be a large amount of site clearance happening again with contractors vehicles and associated bits moving ever closer to the lineside. There has also been a lot - and I mean a lot! of Marking out with green spray cans around the down line side.

The last news that I heard about Marsh Barton appeared to give an opening time in 2018. Where did you hear the news about a 2017 opening?

Another one that seems to suggest that the actual construction works will only commence in the very late part of 2017, so 2018 seems the earliest opening date based on that information.

Has anyone else more definite construction news?

As usual in this neck of the wood great-crested newts have delayed the work , started September 2015 apparently. http://www.nottinghampost.com/work-...rt-end-month/story-27784929-detail/story.html

Roads being closed every weekend this month as part of the constuction process http://www.nottinghampost.com/road-...construction/story-29970709-detail/story.html

I don't think you've researched this sufficiently to justify many of your remarks.

First, TOC's win bids for franchises, based on promises made and contracts agreed to. Stations are normally promoted and paid for by local authorities or transport authorities and /or HM Government, not TOCs, although sometimes they do.

A TOC could offer to provide a sub towards a new station as part of its bid, along with other improvements, e.g. a new car park and they often do so. I don't see how a new station eats into the TOC profit: on the contrary, it would most likely provide an increase in it.

You refer to how long it takes to build a new station from conception to implementation. Citing Ilkeston confirms to me that you had not taken the trouble to find out why these things take so long, as kevjs pointed out.

As to the rest of your opinions about TOCs, they sounded more like something Mick Cash would write.:D

Steam services to Wareham are long term, initially the service will be DMU operated, so there is no need to run round. Both lines between Worgret and Wareham are bi directional to give greater flexibility.

Use of one of the bay platforms again is along term possibility. The service is planned to run on 50 days in 2017 and is planned to expand to 90 in subsequent years.

Update

Having visited the SR yesterday, and reading this http://http://www.swanagerailway.co.uk/userfiles/downloads/wareham_services_news_sept_2016.pdf
I'm not so sure. The reason is that delivery of new wheelsets has not yet happened, being described as a farce, the SR are determined to start the service in June 2017 and are discussing hiring from SWT as it appears that the DMU's will not be ready in time. This may involve their own carriages and a hired loco and crew from SWT

Top n tail by the two SWT 73s!
