I have four in mind with estimated opening dates that I have been told.....
Ilkeston.........................Early part of 2017
Low Moor.......................May 2017
Cambridge North.............May 2017
Kenilworth......................August 2017

Any more to name?

No Paul. No more. The only other real change is going to be Swanage to Wareham hopefully going into regular use

Do we know what the current progress is with Marsh Barton and Edginswell stations? Either are more than likely to now be 2018 openings.

Has a third platform even been built yet at Wareham for the Swanage Railway to use?

No. IIRC The Swanage Railway will be running through the station, and using the sidings to the east of the station to run round in there.

Interesting. I presume that this will be the first heritage railway to share tracks and platforms with the national rail network? I hope SWT passengers dont get on the wrong train by accident!

Perhaps not quite what you had in mind but the new Forres station may open in December 2017:

No, the NYMR have been running to Whitby for years. They've only recently had their own platform built at Whitby.

Worcestershire Parkway should start building its Cotswold line platform in 2017.
That's if the council and the landowner can resolve their differences.
Allegedly due to open in March 2018.

Steam services to Wareham are long term, initially the service will be DMU operated, so there is no need to run round. Both lines between Worgret and Wareham are bi directional to give greater flexibility.

Use of one of the bay platforms again is along term possibility. The service is planned to run on 50 days in 2017 and is planned to expand to 90 in subsequent years.

Update

Having visited the SR yesterday, and reading this http://http://www.swanagerailway.co.uk/userfiles/downloads/wareham_services_news_sept_2016.pdf
I'm not so sure. The reason is that delivery of new wheelsets has not yet happened, being described as a farce, the SR are determined to start the service in June 2017 and are discussing hiring from SWT as it appears that the DMU's will not be ready in time. This may involve their own carriages and a hired loco and crew from SWT

Also the South Devon Railway ran into Totnes for a short while before opening their own station at Riverside.

Other heritage lines run into NR stations but to dedicated platforms not used by NR services e.g. Bodmin Parkway.

Clouding the issue is where a NR plat is on the connection to the private railway e.g. Paignton P2 used by Torbay Express and Alton P2 accessible to both NR and MHR trains in the past.

A bit off topic though!

I thought Maghull North was still scheduled for December 2017

On the new thread on the Infrastructure and Stations forum about Maghull North station, M28361M has stated that the project is expected to go before Sefton Council for planning permission next month and if approved, construction will commence in August 2017 and the station to be fully operational in May 2018.

Four new stations in one-year perhaps indicates most clearly how cash strapped the country truly is.

We just can't afford to expand the network to communities who would actually use the railways.

Possibly all the low hanging fruit stations on our existing network have already been opened/re-opened?

Wixams is a good example. It's a bit of a mess. A railway station is needed to make the town more attractive to live in...but none is yet forthcoming

I don't believe the country is, on the whole, cash strapped - although that's a separate debate for another thread (the ideology of austerity has a lot to answer for IMO).

I wonder if it's a sign of the times that 'only' 4 stations opening seems awful. I'm sure it's not that many years ago that having as many as 4 new stations opening in the same year would have seemed amazing.

Perhaps a more useful question would be: Does the 'only' 4 stations indicate a slowing down of Government support for rail investment, or is it simply a natural fluctuation in openings, with a greater number expected the following year? I guess to answer that, you'd need to know (a) how many new stations opened in 2016, and (b) roughly how many are currently planned for 2018.

Haven't even scratched the surface. There's many, many more that could/should be opened.

If 'low hanging fruit' merely means, places where a new station on an existing line would be relatively simple to build - without requiring extensive new track infrastructure or signalling etc., and would be conveniently sited to serve a reasonable population, then I'd agree with you. But I suspect for 'low hanging fruit' you also need to consider whether:

  • It's in an area where the local authority have been actively pushing for better rail services in a sensible manner
  • Whether the existing timetable can cope with an additional stop.
  • Whether the nature of existing services on the line is such that it's acceptable to slow them down for a few minutes by putting an extra stop in.
  • Whether there's sufficient spare capacity on the existing trains that you can comfortably fit in more passengers without ordering new stock first.
If you factor in those issues, then it seems to me less certain how much more low hanging fruit there is? Are there many other examples of places that meet all those conditions where a new station would be a good idea?

2017 looks like there will be no Scottish reopenings (except Forres) but up here it is probably just a blip as in 2018 and 2019 we should get:
Winchburgh
Robroyston
Dalcross
Kintore
East Linton
Reston

All these have developer funding / council support / Scottish Stations Fund money and the extra calls are priced into the Scotrail franchise.

After that we are looking at Barrhead South / Auchenback with some city deal money.

Still 6 or 7 stations in 2 years suggests we're not quite seeing the end of expansion yet.

Off the top of my head, I can only recall four stations opened in 2016:-
Bermuda Park
Coventry Arena
Edinburgh Gateway
Lea Bridge

My crystal ball is currently being serviced, so I cannot offer any information with regards to the 2018 matter.

I am a tad confused, Is it the case of relocation or some other matter at Forres, rather than the provision of new station to serve the area that was bereft of such a facility.

Indeed Paul Forres is a relocation straightening out the line and enabling a faster service, allowing trains to pass each other in the station itself and closing several level crossings.
