They don't appear to be connected to a trackside cabinet though, and they're underneath the head of the rail so would they be able to register the changing field?

I note that track is very rusty, even if it looks to be in good condition otherwise. Are they perhaps clearance point markers for a shunt neck or yard entrance? The angle of the photo is not clear but the tracks appear to be converging.

I also wondered about the lack of any obvious cabling. They do look a bit like the yellow Frauscher axle counter detector heads at first glance, but they‘d always come with pretty obvious wiring and securing brackets.

I was ready to type "datum plate" before the photo even loaded.

Is it perspective, or is there something 'odd' about the sleepers? They don't seem to line up properly either side of the rails.

I think it; because some of the sleeper ends are covered by the fresh ballast.

I'm wondering if it's some sort of wireless early warning device for someone working down the line, which would avoid the complications that placing dets could have? No doubt someone will know, but they're new to me.

They are not axle counters but are installed about 5-10 meters away from some...they are also covered in this black grease it looks like but the axle counter does not have any on it. This was on the crossrail line if it helps.
