The 395s have the same 20m carriage length as almost every other train on the Southern network.

OK I should've checked. I somehow thought that they were the precursors of the 800s in that they were longer, and they do have 2x2 seatring.

We can't, because they don't have the ATO equipment. It'll all be 700s (assuming the TLP is finished in four years time).

Non ATO / ETCS trains will still be allowed, indeed are expected. At quiet times.

373s - Yes

374s - No

Correct on the 373s as the Ashford International platforms 3 & 4 still appear to have conventional signals and TPWS grids. Assuming the 374s will also stop at Ashford then they will require the same or the signalling changed.

Also saw my first freight on HS1 a few weeks ago. Departing from Ebbsfleet on the 06:02 to St P was aware of a different noise and noticed a class 92 with freight passing on the down through. Seemed to be going at a reasonable speed after climbing from the depths beneath the Thames.

HS1 Rules of the Route allows for Bi-Directional Working over night with a linespeed of 100mph on the open line as I recall.

Would either an Southeastern Electrostar or a 700 ever be allowed into the International station at Ashford (provided that customs checks etc could be done), to transfer the Eurostar passengers into London via "classic" lines?

International platforms would have a huge gap between British-gauge stock's doors, I doubt that'd happen without gap-filling equipment, and gap-filling equipment might not be economically viable.

Why would you do that. Go through immigration / customs at Ashford, and then on via classic lines (from their usual platforms) anyway.

Quite so. But what provision has been made?

Presumably if it is the northern end that is shut, the javelins will run via Fawkham junction then to Bromley South and Victoria?

Not now, it has been taken off our route cards. Some can still drive it but not for much longer.

Interestingly I don't know what happens if all of HS1 is shut for engineering works - usually it's a part closure eg Ashford to Ebbsfleet. When this happened I recall coaches being used to transfer passengers between Ashford and Ebbsfleet with the Javelins taking over from there.

The road journey time is quoted as 40 minutes assuming no traffic. The timetabled say to allow an extra hour for the journey. In this instance it's probably better to use the main line train service to London than risk the rail replacement vehicle breaking down/getting lost/can't take bicycles or is just a bad driver

You go as fast as the TVM says you can.

Also HS1 is KPH not MPH.

If you wish to be pedantic 100mph is 161kph.

To quote Rules of the Route Section 4 for HS1
A single line of route for at least 160km/h running to be available between St Pancras International and CTRL / Eurotunnel Boundary on Monday to Friday nights.

Therefore any works taking place on the closed line must allow the adjacent open line to operate at a minimum linespeed of 160kph.

I presume the Rules of the Route (now the Engineering Access Statement) work the same as anywhere else on Network Rail, in that they define what engineering access is available while still running the normal timetable. More disruptive engineering access is still possible but requires changes to the timetable, so needs longer advance notice and involves compensation to operators.

Two parts to it.
Section 4 which is the engineering access which is available while still running the normal timetable.
Section 7 Is the disruptive access which results in replacement buses or occasionally diversions to services.

Crikey! I better get on one of these popular Javelin railtours then if I'm ever to travel that stretch of line then!

It seems a little silly to get rid of quite a useful diversionary route. I'm aware that Faversham services have diverted to Victoria in the past and it would be a shame for Ashford services to not be able to do so too. I at least hope it'll remain in situ.
