I suppose it's a question of WAG priorities. It is the WAG Express issue that has brought the single line section between Saltney and Chester into sharp focus - taking some of the traffic away from that section AND significantly shortening HH - CC journey times seems like a win win to me! The Wrexham - Bidston line is hardly busy, so plenty of capacity there, with a new stop at Buckley.
I'm sure the new minister will have their own views on the best solution after the election. There may not even be WAG Express after the election and hence no problem anyway?
RE: possible objections - could be an issue, but the cyclepath could easily be relocated at modest costs.
The new Minister is stuck with WAG Ex 2 & Wagair, the outgoing Minister as seen to that, unless £Ms are paid in compensation to ATW & Airline booked to run for years. Wag Ex 1 "Gerald" is on a years contract only.
I agree this Wag Ex situation as brought the single line more in focus, but it was due for work previous,it is a pinch point on the North South route.
Taking any trains away from Chester, is just not going to occur,after the semi doubling, there will still remain a single track up Gresford Bank to General Station about two miles,this runs over the Wrexham Expressway on the bridge that can not be doubled.
In the end all that is going to happen with WAG2 is go back ten years when Wales & Borders ran a Holyhead service to Cardiff via Wrexham, this ran non stop Shrewsbury to Hereford, the May timetabled 175 is no quicker. I used the old service ex Wrexham 0740 arrive Cardiff 1005
