Mumsnet may have its faults, but they are the same faults as any Internet forum. Mumsnet does have much more clout than most forums though. If you're a retailer or service provider you cross it at your peril.

What a car crash that forum is.

Most of it consists of outraged threads where:
- wifey has found texts from OW (other woman) on hubby’s phone;
- wifey is fretting about about hubby’s precise relationship with his younger, more attractive, female colleague he’s going to a work conference with;
- someone posts a pic of themselves and asks “do I look fat?”, resulting in a chorus of insincere “no hun, you look lovely xxx” responses.

I enjoy reading it but it makes me bloody glad I’m single.

Hadn't seen this thread until now so haven't read every single bit (what little remains of my sanity is far too valuable!) but the idea that someone should not watch something, and with headphones no less, because some mum can't entertain her child on a train journey by other means, is quite bizarre. Earlier on I was on a train from Huddersfield to Batley, and sat across the aisle a young woman who was travelling with two young children (her niece and nephew, as it turned out). Far from sticking an iPad infront of them and staring into space (as most parents/guardians seem to do) she was entertaining the kids with an old fashioned game of "name a (fruit/country/girl or boys name) beginning with A, B, C, etc. It was quite refreshing to see such a genuine and natural sort of interaction with no digital devices needed. Those two kids will probably turn out to be better adults than spoiled little Rupert with the entitled Mumsnet mum!

I think you would struggle to to argue watching a TV show on the train as an outrage to public decency or inciting hatred. And I can assure you that BTP would not be remotely interested so the point is a bit moot.

I am not sure we can use what BTP consider of interest to them as a useful guide!!

I was thinking more of other content you can find online - maybe something along the lines of a far right video inciting racial hatred or a graphic Islamist beheading. There is plenty of stuff online that am sure can upset or incite pretty much anyone.

Do you (and all the other people reflexively posting "Ew, Mumsnet!") realise that you're actually in agreement with "the entitled Mumsnet mum"? The Mumsnet poster was the iPad user, not the mother asking her not to watch Homeland on the train.

I did not, so thanks for the clarification. I used "Mumsnet mum" as the term for the mum because of my misapprehension of which party had subsequently posted on that website about the encounter. Perhaps the reputation of that website precedes it!

Nevertheless, now I'm aware of my error, I haven't changed my opinion on who I thought was in the wrong. Why would I?
