There are problems in Belgium as well. A tree has blocked the line between Antwerp Centraal and Amsterdam. So it is not just the UK that is affected

In that case, fair enough - though with the warnings given yesterday of no service in the morning, why risk it ?

The trains services where fine yesterday so he had no excuse and could get into work. The trouble was getting back which his employers dont are about.

Southerns emergency timetable today - going to be VERY fun at Falmer for the football tonight.

Fun at Redhill too - Only one train an hour from London Bridge to Horsham calling at Redhill. Nothing from Victoria. Even though the line from Redhill to East Croydon is clear of debris, trees etc - from visual inspection on the 11:14 to East Croydon this morning. That train will be very full if anyone got to London this morning - bet it only has 1x 377 on it

Services are being strengthened, so 8 coaches as a minimum id expect.

Pleasantly surprised to see the response by many contributors to social media has been, if not positive, at least accepting of the need to cancel trains.

The railways seem to have moved early and communicated the problems well. That hasn’t been my issue with all this rather the over the top, mega flap, end of the world, reporting of the media and reaction of the general public .Some of it has been laughable for what is a strong but not unprecedented autumnal storm.

The folks running the Twitter feeds for the various TOCs all deserve medals IMO, they're diligently responding to as many queries as they can, even if most of the time the answer is "sorry, we're not running services yet / the line's blocked by a tree". They've also shared photos of fallen trees, and occasionally an "after" shot of the tree successfully cleared and reduced to logs on the side of the track!

With NRE and the TOCs' own websites buckling under the strain this morning, Twitter was essential to me in determining what was happening and what my best course of action should be.

Someone on here had been moaning about Southern not showing ticket office closures online, so now along with all the delays issues, we are now getting info on every ticket office on the southern network closing early (or to go for a pee). In the last few weeks its gone up by 30% plus.

Ohhh so this site is an official way to complain to Southern now?

And thanks for your info about the Uckfield line, now sitting at my desk in London, working hard! Trying to decide how early I can leave to go home! Office is strangely deserted!

Absolutely, the guys on the Greater Anglia site have somehow managed to not lose it and respond "I SAID NO TRAINS BEFORE 12:00 YOU [insert favourite swearwords here]".

Unfortunately a sizeable proportion of the public are ignorant, surly and self-centred.

he was trying to get home to Uckfield. Seems like he had to wait a few hours until late morning

SarahJ might have more information but I saw a down train stop at Crowborough at around 11.20, I assume that it came from East Croydon.

I caught a train northbound from Crowborough around 12.05 and there was another down train that seemed to have stopped immediately after pulling out of Ashurst (unless it had overshoot) as only the rear carriage or two were in the platform as we passed heading north. There was a diesel in th bay at Oxted, and we passed another one heading down probably around Riddlesdown.

In times of major disruption on the Uckfield line my first consideration is the Hastings line to Tunbridge Wells, if thats not operational I'll go from London Bridge to East Croydon and then to Oxted, at which point I can decide on whether to wait for a train or get to East Grinstead or get someone to collect me.

If I was going to Uckfield my first option would be Haywards Heath.

FCC are stopping Northbound trains between Brighton & St Pancras at Redhill at 10 & 40 minutes past the hour at present (not sure if anyone mentioned it).

Last time there was major disruption on the Southern network with no trains going through East Croydon someone tweeted Southern to ask whether they would be better starting a journey at London Bridge or Victoria when they were trying to get to Oxted to receive a response that said

I wouldn't start at either, go to the ub for a couple of hours instead.

Made me smile although I assume it was no Southerns official response!

aimed for the 1400 to MAN. So did everyone else. Only they got on. One I am on calls at Stafford Crewe Runcorn - just left Rugby
