Uber ticketing

I can't see these lasting, especially not the former.

Uber has surely been making substantial losses aimed at building a customer base for the rail ticket part of the company, as well as - crucially - encouraging wider use of their other products.

I'd rather use a site that offers useful features and excellent customer service, such as the forum site.

We wouldn't team up with a provider as poor as Uber if they paid us to. It's full of glitches and people only use them for discounts/cashback, which their financial backers can't afford to fund indefinitely.

I admit I wouldn't use them any more for walk up tickets if there is no longer a discount or cashback, but if they still offer free and convenient changes for Advances I'll continue to use them for Advances rather than the forum site which charges an administrative fee.

There are a number of other sites which offer not only fee-free Advance changes but also fee-free walk-up ticket refunds.

Of course, we're not necessarily the customers that Uber will want to keep: if anything they'll be glad to get rid of those of us who have taken full advantage of the special offers without committing to Uber and so have profited at Uber's expense, but keeping those customers who have found the experience good enough to stay and presumably be long-term profitable for Uber.

I might continue to use them for things like cheap Network Railcard-discounted short-distance Ovalised DOS tickets that are TOD-only (e.g. because they're issued to U zones), because the retailer probably loses money on those due to the TOD fee being more than the commission, even if there's no discounted gift card or kickback involved.

I try not to use Uber for anything they might conceivably be making a profit on.

Are there actually many of those customers though? In my experience its one of the worst apps to book tickets on - slow, clunky and buggy. I guess they'll find out! I assume some people will use it because they are using uber to get to / from the atation and so they'll be in the app anyway - but otherwise?

From speaking to people (who might just be saying it to make me shut up), they put up with the clunkiness and awkwardness because of the discount.

I think it's quite likely many wouldn't bother when they're getting nothing from it, particularly for walk-ups being bought in the moment rather than advances where they might benefit from fee-free changes.

The ability to buy an Uber gift card at 10% off, which is a current offer on the app, or 15% off as on Amazon recently and then spend the gift card on train tickets would be a continuing incentive regardless of the possible withdrawal of the credits.

I assume that Uber's expectation is that once people are in the habit of using the Uber app, they'll keep on going, unless there's a positive reason to move elsewhere i.e. elsewhere is cheaper, rather than elsewhere is quicker/easier.

The end (of Uber credits) is near

Screenshot shows an Uber survey asking what would encourage the user to keep booking train tickets on Uber if cashback credits were removed.
Is this confirmed?

I renewed a Uber One membership last Saturday. If the 10% credits is going, then I'll cancel and request a refund under the 14 days cooling off period.

Although will I still get a refund if I have used the app and received two cashback amounts.

No, no changes are confirmed. So far all they have done is a survey asking what we would do if the credits weren't there.

I think the current expiry date of the credits deal is 31 August. Remains to be seen what happens after that.

It does not matter what T&C's state.

It does seem a bit wrong that they are able to abolish credits after people have paid their Uber One money for the year. For some, the 10% credits on train journeys is a bit part of the justification for joining.

If they want to do away with credits, it should be done along the lines of all new customers after X date are no longer eligible. Not screw over those whom have already paid their money.

The offer always has an expiry date, that so far has always been extended. At the moment the T&cs say
Offer valid for users who have an Uber account and book their train or coach ticket on Uber Travel (including trains, coaches and Eurostar, but excluding flights), on or before 31 August 2026.
Anyone who subscribes to Uber One for this (including me) should know the risk beyond that date, on at least one occasion it was only extended after the expiry too.

Even though Uber might not be the most ethical of companies it still seems a little entitled to complain about this, considering they're losing money on every ticket, and never promised it would last beyond whatever the current expiry date is. I didn't expect it to last this long.

Incidentally free delivery from Domino's via Uber Eats app is also a nice perk, and stacks with Top Cashback

Not seeing it either, so it must be a user-specific offer.

Three rail journeys made last week, on Fri, Sat and Sun.

Friday and Saturday's journeys have been credited, and were on Tuesday (Friday's) and Wednesday (Saturday's).

Sunday's hasn't been.

From my previous experience, if a journey hasn't been credited within a week, it is unlikely to be.

I've lost out on a few journeys in the past that didn't credit, even with a chasing message to customer services.

All times have strangely have involved Evening/Sunday Out tickets.

I found that I can buy a same day peak ticket with an off peak price. The eventual ticket that arrived said off peak but I have the times of the train I bought

An Off-Peak ticket isn’t linked to any specific train, the times shown are only a suggestion.

The ticket will have a restriction code, and I suspect the train you want to take meets those restrictions. In the unlikely event that it doesn’t, the ticket should also be accepted for the itinerary you have, although you might encounter some difficulty. But it is probably valid anyway

That makes sense. It was an 08:44 Maidstone to London return ticket which is usually a peak ticket but it passed the inspector scanning it and at the barriers

An Off-Peak Day Return from Maidstone Stations to London Terminals, route "not HS1", has restriction code B5. This means it's valid from 08:30 onwards. So the 08:44 from Maidstone East is perfectly valid to take with that ticket and any retailer should offer it.

The restriction code is different if you're travelling to somewhere else, or using HS1 to get to London.

Has a one found the seat reservation option not to work?

I booked a journey using XC at the weekend, selected the seat reservation option, yet my ticket did not have a seat reservation stated.

When I was on the train, I did notice that seat reservations were working.

So must be an issue with the app.

It may have been that none were available.

Seems like the ubersupport@omio email has turned into a do not reply. I used it to submit ticket change requests for advanced tickets but looks like you have to use the online form or call now.

Having had no response, or action via the online form in the past, I'll be calling in the future - including for the two previous transactions (detailed in a post dated 18th July) I've still not been credited for.

A bit of added benefit to the Uber One subscription....

A free weekly pick up only Coffee at Joe and the Juice coffee chain. One free drink every week until 30th November.

You'll have to sign up to their app if you haven't already done so.

The promo code can be found in the Uber One Members area.

I understand that Birmingham New Street, St Pancras, Paddington and Wimbledon stations all have a Joe and the Juice branch.

Does anyone know how the Uber credits interact with a changed date on an Advance? Do the credits still apply after the updated travel date, or does altering the ticket break the link with the credit system?
