Yes. Trainpal shows the price upfront with any discounts I have too so I'm used to that but this seems to inflate then just take off the inflation.

My Halifax account is now offering 15% cashback on Uber. So I’ve just tried buying a £100 Uber gift card for myself. I’ll see if I get £15 cashback.
My Lloyds account is offering the same deal.

Have you received the cashback yet?

And what are the Ts and Cs that apply :p
I didn't click to find out!

I tend to do research when buying tickets on Uber anyway. Especially on journeys that do require split tickets.

Even though they now offer split tickets, their splitting algorithm is not as good as Trainsplit.

So sometimes have to buy tickets separately on Uber.

I recently had this on a trip to Trowbridge. Uber would not pick up the split point at Newbury, despite the train stopping there. Had to buy two seperate tickets to ensure I got the split ticket saving.

I see we can now convert our Sainsbury's Nectar points into Uber vouchers e.g. 500 points for a £2.50 voucher.

Be warned, doing this is not valid on Train tickets. It's only valid on taxis and food.

Saw the email and thought it would be worth doing since I had some nectar points... And it doesn't show up when buying tickets

This is the same discount as you'd get spending them in Sainsbury's isn't it? I can't see the point in converting them into a less flexible voucher.

It is the same rate. I don't see the ability to convert them to an Uber voucher which I can use as payment for an Uber Ride as providing less flexibility, more of an additional option as to how to spend Nectar points.

I am getting only 3% cashback on my uber app at the moment. However on a bluelight card you can buy uber credits with a special 8.5% off at present (don’t know how long it lasts? ).
So stacked with my 3% , it’s 11.5%
Does anyone know of any pitfalls !!
Thank you.

Assuming that it's the right sort of UBER credit (see the discussion above about Nectar) this should work: doing the same through Edenred worked for me.

I got the £15 on my cashback account within a couple of days. I won’t get the cash for a month or two.
So, I tried to buy a £180 gift card on Sunday 12th April, which was blocked by Uber with a message advising me to contact their "customer support" (and I use those inverted commas advisedly).

To get them to disclose that the transaction was being blocked from their end due to a risk rule, rather than being a technical glitch, took 4 days and about 6 messages. They said it was "not possible" for them to remove the block. They then advised to wait 48 hours between attempts, as the block may be time-limited. I did so. It wasn't that. They then again said they could do nothing about the block. I made a Subject Access Request. They tried to tell me I had to contact another department and referred me to their personal data guidance (which is designed to obfuscate and deflect SARs by providing various ways of getting incomplete info). I told them I didn't accept that they could process my personal data in ways that led them to take decisions prejudicial to my interests as a consumer without being transparent about what data they held. Within an hour, all of a sudden they could remove the block on my account and/or payment card and I was able to buy the gift card, 8 days after the first attempt.

Not an easy company to deal with, in my experience so far...

All the gift cards I have bought so far have been through third parties ( Amazon etc.) and I haven't had a problem. That limits my opportunities to buy but does seem to avoid hassle.

I must admit when I posted about the Nectar / Uber tie up, I did think it was a voucher I could use for train tickets on Uber, as this article in the Metro had indicated. Obviously, you've tried and can confirm to the contrary.

I'd only bought one before - through Amazon with 10% off - and that was unproblematic. But this time my debit card was offering 15% cashback (on a single-use basis) for spending on the Uber app. Gift cards are not excluded.

I think in fairness to their customer services they were probably a bit confused why I didn't want to try another payment card or buy from a third party. And maybe their automated risk assessment was right - they probably lose money on selling train tickets at a 15% discount, even despite the fact Lloyds probably part-funds the cashback and there's an element of prepayment.

Assuming that it's the right sort of UBER credit (see the discussion above about Nectar) this should work: doing the same through Edenred worked for me.

According to a legal website:

Clear Terms and Conditions

You must provide clear and transparent terms and conditions for your gift cards. This includes information about:

  • expiry dates;
  • usage restrictions;
  • refund policies; and
  • any fees associated with the card.
Failure to provide clear terms could lead to disputes and potential legal issues under UK consumer protection laws. Key considerations include transparent communication of terms and proper handling of online sales, which are subject to a 14-day cooling-off period. By ensuring transparency in your gift card policies, you can avoid regulatory scrutiny and maintain customer trust.

So if you bought a Uber gift card and weren't able to use it for train ticket travel, that would be a 'usage restriction'.

Therefore Uber would be falling fowl Of UK Consumer laws by not making this usage restriction clear.

I wonder if the same principle applies to Nectar exchange. People have exchanged their Nectar points in good faith, expecting to use them for train ticket purchases - only to find this doesn't work.

Yep I had the exact same thought to the email, but when it goes into your Uber account, it doesn't go in as credit, it goes in as "voucher" and on the voucher says "valid on Uber Rides and Uber Eats"

Ultimately it would appear the Nectar app/Email says "Uber Rides and Uber Eats" and I suppose I didn't put that together, as the train tickets are normally classed as "Uber Travel" (which is particularly important for things like cashback as the merchant code is different) Although fun fact, I once had a Monzo 15% Uber Rides cashback offer, I bought 6x Avanti First class tickets for a family trip and the transaction didn't track (which I expected) but on appeal they accepted it and paid out a hefty cashback, maybe they're getting back at me personally for that

I bought Uber gift cards last time Sainsbury's did this offer and it worked fine with rail tickets - I see no reason it would be different this time, but with Uber you never quite know!

I was using uber with a credit card for years without issue but as soon as I applied a £150 gift card from Sainsbury’s, that triggered a risk flag and they wanted to do extra checks, as if £150 is a big amount in the context of train travel!

I think I have had this once but don't really remember, so you are more up to speed than I am. But did the extra checks prevent or delay you from using the gift card?

Does the trigger still occur if a smaller gift card balance is purchased instead?

I mean if you bought x3 £100 gift cards (or at a push x6 £50) as opposed to x2 £150 ones.

Also, what 'checks' are carried out?

Can anyone also confirm if some kind of retention offer is still usually offered when you attempt to cancel Uber One?

My free month trial will expire on 1st May. However, if some decent retention offer is given, I could be tempted to go for the annual plan this time around.
