I'm looking to use the Tesco version to pay for my commute tomorrow, so should be able to give a definite answer then.

I have already found that
- it takes a few minutes for the voucher to come through from Tesco to your email, and
- Uber needs you to have set up an Uber money account to deposit the voucher

So it's not something to enter into if you've only got a couple of minutes before your train.

I’m grateful that they have always pushed the date back further and further (it’s now mid-Jan I think). If the offer ended and were not renewed I’d be disappointed and my wallet would be a little lighter but I wouldn’t feel hard done by.

Well, if Uber end up abolishing the rebate for non Uber One members entirely, then there will little incentive to carry on using it.

When the rebate went from 10% down to 5%, I believe there was some advance notice given.

Seems no advance notice was given for the 5% to 3% change.

I've even had tickets that were booked under 5% rebate, only credit as 3%.

Agreed. It was 'summat for nothing' and anyone using the app must have realised this.

Uber One membership is a different matter, but as I'm not a member I have no idea if they've done anything contrary to their terms and conditions.

The problem of course is having to spend large amounts upfront in order to get that effective 10% rebate.

Not something everyone is in a financial position to do.

But there doesn't seem to be a limit on how many cards you can buy. That may also be a good ting if you're also stacking Uber Credit as it seems that you need to use up any Uber Money on your account before you can use the (time limited) credit - so it may be worth holding gift cards in fairly low denominations and only adding them to the account when any credit has been used.

@Fawkes Cat, it's the time-limited credit that's used before Uber Money. It certainly was in my case... at least until I had the unpleasant surprise of discovering my Uber balance (both credits & Money) is suddenly unredeemable against rail tickets today, even though it was merely several days ago.

I spoke with Uber (Omio) support staff on the phone and they said when Uber enabled Money redemption against rail tickets it was only planned to be 25% of... well, they had no idea if it was 25% of customers, journeys, or something else; basically they intimated it was never intended to be made to be available to all Uber customers. Unlike the credit rebate differentials this caveat is kept secret - I don't believe you'll find it in their terms or FAQs.

I've submitted a support ticket requesting the return of my remaining Uber Money balance, which was funded in whole by gift cards. I may chase them on the credits (which amount to pennies, thankfully) at a later date.

I've never been able to spend my Uber Money balance on train or coach tickets unfortunately. It just doesn't work. For a while I also couldn't spend them even on Uber Eats. However that part does now work.

The Help section of the app still says Uber Money can be used for rail tickets:

I will turn it back on before I click Buy tomorrow but am not optimistic based on Edvid’s report (but James’s report gives me some hope). Currently, the search output seems to be a combination of two inconsistent searches each using different search criteria - for some journeys it'll try to sell me two walk-up singles (out and return on the same day on the same route) without offering me any of the (much cheaper) walk-up returns! Two super-off peak singles instead of the obvious super off-peak return!

Yes - it does seem to have managed to do this when I last bought a ticket on Monday. I wonder if it is me misunderstanding Uber, or them being unpredictable?

Next ticket purchase on Thursday: let's see if it will persist.

It really doesn't encourage one to stay with Uber once the promotional balance has been used. So how much of their promotional budget are they wasting when it puts me off using them in the long term?

When that happened I didn't notice and accidentally bought an Off-Peak period return which is approximately the same price, and it's only when it arrived as an e-ticket instead of ticket-on-departure that I wondered what had gone wrong! More hassle than it was worth to work out how to complain and to try to get it corrected (and no time to do this before travelling) so I just wrote the extra tube fares off against the Uber Credits they've been giving me.

That's an example of what I mean about the unpredictability of their system at the moment. The user interface, behaviour and selection of journeys and fares presented can change from day-to-day without any notification and it's far too easy to be get caught out by it. Worse, it doesn't give you a final complete and consistent summary of everything about your purchase in one place for you to make a final check that you are buying what you think you are before you confirm the payment.

The promo is right on the top of the Headforpoints website and they say:

"I’m not sure if this is still the case, but Uber used to try to encourage you to redeem your gift card by putting it into an Uber Money account. This used to involve a credit search. Instead, add it under ‘Promotional Code’ in the app and (if nothing has changed) it goes onto your balance as it always used to."

Travelcard options still show for me.

However, one option that does not show is the 'Evening Out' Travelcard, which is considerably cheaper.

Evening Out (non Travelcard) tickets do show though.

I'm still seeing traditional Uber gift cards with a 10% discount.
