Well - back to the 70s or earlier would be very welcome. We had better legroom, better seat alignment with windows, plenty of trains without aircon -- and surely we can last for a few hours without phones, portable computers / tablets, etc ??? Also, if you were working, you were out of touch with your boss / workplace for a few hours.

My parents had a dog that used to bark at planes going over. I did think the dog logic would be that one never landed every time he barked at them. Guess the same applies to trains?

Dog would be no good at an airport !. Or station !.

I wonder if Poole is the nearest station to London where the fastest rail journey to the capital takes at least 2 hours.

I haven't checked throughly, but looking through journeys for tomorrow I don't see anything less than 2 hours, for Parkstone (one stop closer to London on the same line) or Gillingham (on the next line north), perhaps there is something better at weekends or in the non-covid timetable though.

If you count stations that require a ferry to reach the mainland, Ryde peir head also seems to be 2+ hours.

The aircon in the 70's was great behind Deltics and 87s. What ruined it was the national addiction to tobacco.
