Was the Nelson - Higherford section always a subsidised service, going back to the pre-Ribble County days? I know there was some S21 funding for evening journeys thanks to the housing developments - though the funding for which ran out before the houses were even built.
Pretty sure it used to be commercial. Barrowford is more a town than a village, and has a large college, so it is definitely a place you would think would have a commercial service. But there is basically no reason for anyone to go to Nelson these days. And the college has it's own dedicated buses (plus Barrowford has a college bus to Burnley, so the 2 won't get any traffic in that direction either)
I can't see the 2 lasting very long once Transdev give up the Nelson - Higherford section. It's the only direct link to a sizeable village, despite it being relatively close to Nelson. The 2 that remains basically follows the same route as a number of existing services that already link Burnley and Nelson.
Despite a coordinated timetable, and I believe through-tickets are available, passengers aren't really keen on connections!
The coordinated timetable is supposedly going to be with the LCC subsidised number 60, which takes a very round the houses route into Burnley. The remaining part of the 2 is a reasonable distance from the Mainline route, but also what a map doesn't show is how steep the hill is in between.
Vision Bus seem to be the big winners (again) in Lancashire's latest round of tenders, also picking up the 65,66,67 and 69 Pendleside routes from Preston Bus, plus the Ormskirk town circulars and a new route serving some villages between Preston and Chorley.
