Quite inconvenient for anyone traveling beyond York Station then, especially if traveling as a family with lots of kids after a day out. By that metric, why not terminate that 840 in Malton and have people transfer onto the 843 there? Transdev has an outstation there after all. Just seems counterintuitive to have a once per day (on that section) service run from Leeds but not return to Leeds in the evening.

Doesn't have to be Whitby, could be anywhere north of Malton that is served by the 840 and not 843.
It may simply be a coincidence that it is the Whitby bus - no where north of Malton has a Sunday bus to or from Leeds so perhaps the fact it is morning only trip means its purpose is to offer an earlier summer bus from Leeds to York rather than a through bus to Whitby.

Whitby is more popular with York people than Leeds which will explain why the daily evening return from Whitby runs to York not Leeds.

The 0923 from York is 30 minutes before the first arrival from Leeds, so in order to give people from Leeds access to a day out on the moors they have to start the bus back from Leeds.
The 1736 from Whitby has a connection to Leeds on the 843, so they don't need to continue it to Leeds to enable those people to have their day out.
Because the bus starts its day in York, it has to end it in York so that it's in the right place for the next day, so stopping it at Malton doesn't save a lot of mileage if you've still got to run it light back to Rawcliffe.
I suspect there would also be capacity issues on the connecting 843 if they tried terminating the 840 in Malton and making passengers transfer.

There is an 840 at 8:30am that leaves Thornton-le-Dale for Leeds on Sundays, serving Pickeing, returning to Pickering and Thornton-le-Dale at 16:40 from Leeds. The Monday-Saturday evening return (which leaves Whitby at the same time as the Sunday return) terminates in Tadcaster, not York.
I suspect there would also be capacity issues on the connecting 843 if they tried terminating the 840 in Malton and making passengers transfer.
Surely the 843 would have capacity issues from York with connecting passengers coming off the 840 if it were to have capacity issues from Malton?

Maybe they actually know what the passenger flows have been like in previous years, rather than this imaginary family that is doing a 4 hour journey each way to visit Whitby

No. A large proportion of passengers from each service will be getting off in York, I would be surprised if more than half of them were continuing beyond.

Apologies if covered already, a month or so ago I saw a number of Flyer MB0295 Citaro hybrids parked at Blackburn depot, anyone know when these are due in service in Yorkshire?
Paul Turner, Transdev Blazefields Commercial Manager, posted on Facebook last week that 13 of them had arrived at Blackburn so two more were still awaited to form the Flyer fleet. They are to have a vinyl livery applied before entering use. As for the two that had been earmarked for the X99 no details yet have emerged on where they will be going.

Which depot runs that journey ex Whitby? Rawcliffe?

Yet a large proportion would also board the 843 in York, after all, York-Leeds is the busiest section of the Coastliner.

Yes. It's the same vehicle that runs the 9:23am York-Whitby. It does one return journey between Whitby and Malton, and another between Malton and Thornton-le-Dale before returning to York.

As I said before, it doesn't even have to be Whitby, it could be anywhere north of Malton that the 843 doesn't serve, eg Pickering or Thornton-le-Dale. On the flip side, they don't even have to be starting in Leeds, they could be coming from Tadcaster (where the Monday-Saturday evening return off Whitby terminates), Copmanthorpe or Seacroft.

Or it could just be to make more capacity between Leeds and York because the first Sunday morning bus was very busy in the summer last year. You seem convinced because morning trip isn't mirrored in the evening that its somehow wrong or illogical, whereas as others have pointed out they may well know exactly what they are dong and why and it may have nothing to do with Leeds to Whitby or (Companthorpe to Flamingo Land, or Tadcaster to Eden Camp etc etc). Just because you don't get it doesn't mean its the wrong thing to do!

So that’s your answer. There’s little to no saving in truncating it at Malton, and you’d have a potential overload if you did. It has to run to York so run it in service.

Running it to Leeds would be duplicating the Scarborough car, and probably put the driver over their hours, and incur more wages.

Does the Sunday 840 to Whitby use the same driver for the entire trip currently and if so, would another driver be needed to take it from Leeds? Looking at timings, it is currently possible for one driver to operate it due to breaks in Whitby, this may not be the case with the service starting in Leeds.
It may be the busiest section overall, but at 8pm on a Sunday? I suspect not.
Summer Sunday night out in York and then catch the Coastliner home? I've noticed loadings on morning/evening Coastliner journeys on Sundays are getting busier with the warmer weather.

As I said before, it is certainly inconvenient. Would you want an extra 15 minutes added to your already long journey home? I understand ponts being made by others, but any extra capacity on Coastliner is welcome. The hourly service on Sunday is frequently full and standing, I've witnessed time and time again people be left behind in York on a Sunday, having to wait another hour to get to Leeds. From Transdev's perspective, yes, it makes sense to do this, but not from the perspective of someone living beyond York Station who now has their journey home extended by a 15 minute wait.

I'm fine with a wait time between connections of 5 minutes or less, but 15 minutes is an excessive amount of time to have people wait to continue their onward journey.

I'd suspect that a bus leaving Rawcliffe at 0715 (?) would have a jockey driver to do the additional Leeds bit.

Regular driver takes on vehicle in York at 0923 and drives to Whitby (1150) before heading back 1216 for break at 1340 in Malton. The return would be 1527 to Whitby (1650) then return at 1736 into York (1954) and then to depot. That's easily a day approaching 12 hours.

The cost and operational hassle of having another driver to run through to Leeds (arr 2057) and then run back to Rawcliffe would be how much £££? Alternatively, you ask passengers heading from Whitby to stops past York to wait 15 mins and get the Scarborough vehicle. I suspect that Transdev have done the sums and that additional cost simply isn't worth it for the limited number of passengers affected.

That same vehicle currently operates a trip to Thornton-le-Dale, leaving Malton at 13:57, and arriving back in Malton at 15:12.

Yes, just inconvenient for those traveling past York. I suppose it would be possible to make the trip worthwhile for Transdev if the 843 timetable was shifted around, possibly also allowing the vehicle to operate a revenue earning service to Leeds in the morning so it doesn't run empty. This would also allow the bus to return to York from Leeds in revenue earning service. But clearly this was something Transdev didn't want to do.

The reasons why they don’t are sensible.

The morning run would essentially duplicate the first 843 into Leeds, perhaps only bring 15 mins in front of the 0705. Cheaper to run empty from Rawcliffe rather than incur extra cost on running an extra journey early on a Sunday morning that isn’t really needed.

As for the evening run, the 840 runs 15 mins earlier so that there’s a safety margin for passengers to change onto the 843 in York.

Hence why I said it would be possible if Transdev adjusted the 843 Sunday timetable but this isn't something they wanted to do for whatever reason.

Obviously a second driver is needed to operate the current service. What could be done is this:
York driver takes the bus from Rawcliffe to Leeds
York driver takes the bus to Malton
Malton driver takes the bus to Whitby
Malton driver takes the bus back to Malton
York driver takes the bus to Thornton-le-Dale
York driver takes the bus back to Malton
York driver takes the bus to Whitby
York driver takes the bus back to York (or Leeds)
York driver takes bus back to Rawcliffe
Seeing as a second driver is already needed for the current service level, this would allow the York driver a sufficient break time in both Whitby and Malton and the Malton driver to do a shift on the 843.

Think about it.

Your duty would have the Rawcliffe driver starting at 0700 and working to 1017 (Malton). They'd have a 3.5 hour break until 1357 and then working until 1650 before another break in Whitby (45 mins), then working 1736 to 2010 (or 2200 if it ran through to Leeds). That's a 13 or 15 hour day.

More importantly, if the Rawcliffe driver does the morning Leeds run, then they would have driving of 0710 to 0800 to Leeds, then 0810 to 1150 to Whitby, and then only 26 mins before heading to Malton for 1340. That's over 6 hours driving without a 30 min continuous break. Hence why I think it's a separate driver that does the 0810 from Leeds to York.

As it is, your plan also has other issues. Your Malton driver who currently does the 1357-1512 round trip... what are they currently doing in the morning? I assume they're already busy to some 843 work so that would need to be covered.

The easiest option is what they've done and we're worrying about a few passengers travelling from Whitby to Leeds that might have a 15 min wait in York. Given the cost/operational implications, you can see why Transdev have done it this way.

So what is the current driver working? The York driver can't cover the whole day of driving so a Malton driver has to help out at some point.

On the flip side, Transdev could've reduced the connection time in York, perhaps down to just below 10 minutes, say by reducing time at Stonebow. I have no issue with not having through services, but a 15 minute wait time is far from ideal.

What they don't want to do is to have different running times in the high summer period from the rest of the year – an additional section of journey is fine, because anyone who can catch a Coastliner bus for the other 10½ months of the year sees no change – but running buses differently would mean that those regular passengers would find that their bus wasn't running at the regular time for 6 weeks, which would be confusing and unhelpful. So it has to be something that works all year round.

Having had a posting deleted because it added nothing to the topic I'll try again on the first part, and ignore Coastliner matters, which was correcting my earlier posting re the hybrids as their are only 15 and the two intended for the X99 are listed by the West Yorkshire Information Service along with all the others as Flyer vehicles. Paul Turner on Facebook has now confirmed all 15 are at Blackburn and vinyls are being applied. Confirmed to a question that the Versas will remain in use next week.

As I said at 17:39 yesterday...

Obviously, the driver needs a break and so a Malton driver has to do the round trip to Thornton Dale at 1357. Of course, that Malton driver will have other work as part of their shift.

On the flip side, Transdev could've reduced the connection time in York, perhaps down to just below 10 minutes, say by reducing time at Stonebow. I have no issue with not having through services, but a 15 minute wait time is far from ideal.
In relation to having a 15 min wait time, that isn't ideal. However, it provides a bit of contingency in case the 840 gets delayed in traffic. It really is the least worst option.

Consider this... How many people are likely to be travelling from north of Malton to south of York? 5-10 people that might be inconvenienced by 15 mins?

Alternatively, you extend the 840 to Leeds. Transdev have to find another driver to run through to Leeds at a cost of £100, and all the while, another vehicle that has capacity runs behind it 15 mins later. That's the equation, they know the costs and they know how many passengers are impacted.

Having looked at the 843 timetable, the bus 15 minutes later only waits at Stonebow for 4 minutes, and Stonebow is usually where a driver change occurs so its not really possible to reduce it.
Consider this... How many people are likely to be travelling from north of Malton to south of York? 5-10 people that might be inconvenienced by 15 mins?
I suppose once timetables are printed, Transdev needs to communicate that for those traveling onwards, a 15 minute connection onto the 843 is available, like is done with the 840 at Malton on Sundays with the Thornton-le-Dale shuttle. Just by adding some sort of arrow to the 843 departure or something like that. It would be a way of communication with passengers as to what is happening and why. To be fair, Transdev is quite good at adding details like this to their timetables.

On an unrelated note, there's quite a few changes occurring in the Burnley area. In partnership with Lancashire County Council, new evening journeys will be introduced on Hotline and the 8:
In partnership with Lancashire County Council, we're bringing new evening and Sunday buses to the 8 from 20 July.

On Monday to Saturday, there will be new buses leaving Burnley to Bacup at 7.40pm, 8.40pm, 9.40pm and 10.40pm. Returning from Bacup, buses will depart at 8.06pm, 9.06pm, 10.06pm and 11.06pm.

On Sundays, buses will depart Burnley hourly from 9.40am to 6.40pm, and Bacup at 10.06am to 7.06pm.

The new evening and Sunday journeys will not serve Pennine Road.
In partnership with Lancashire County Council, we're bringing more later buses on Hotline from 20 July.

On Monday to Saturday, the 10pm trip from Preston to Blackburn will now run all the way to Burnley, departing Blackburn at 10.40pm. There will also be a new trip from Burnley to Blackburn, departing at 11.28pm.

This will mean that the 11.28pm Mainline M2 to Padiham will no longer operate.

Transdev is also holding a consultation regarding proposed changes to the 1 in Burnley:
We're always looking at ways we can improve our services and we would love to hear your thoughts on a change we are thinking of making to the 1.

We'd no longer serve Dalton Street or Woodcourt Avenue and would instead continue along Rossendale Road before turning onto Cog Lane. This would mean we serve the new Brun Lea Heights housing development as well as extra stops at Linton Drive and Hanover Court. The new route would be followed on all journeys, including those in the evening and on Sundays.

Those changes to the 1 Stoops service are very sensible. A small minority of people who currently have a bus stop at the end of their front gardens would have to walk a minute or two to the bus stop, but the service is then easily accessible by a lot more potential passengers, and that's without taking into account the new housing estates.

Suppose the only way it could possibly be improved further is if the circular section of the route alternated between clockwise and anticlockwise.

ETA: Just looked and found it runs at a 20 minute frequency, so the alternate circular idea is a none starter!

The only feedback I sent in was perhaps look at a new bus stop on Rossendale Road near the pedestrian cut-through through to Fenwick Street. Otherwise, as per current bus stop locations, a person would be forced to walk up the seemingly quite steep hill to the Usha Indian Restaurant or walk to Cog Lane. A new bus stop in this location would significantly reduce the inconvenience for existing passengers. Otherwise, I agree, quite sensible proposals.

So 2774 at York has been repainted into the base red City Sightseeing livery, with Bustimes calling it a "Winter Livery." Any idea what that's about?

Additionally, 581 has become the last of the ex-Reliance ADL200MMCs to be repainted into the blue York & Country livery.

Was on it earlier. Still says Harrogate on the inside rear of both floors, but externally, other than legals, it is blank.
