If air fuel was taxed, and environmentally adjusted (CO2 basis), then we might have a fairer comparison. Flying is screwing the planet*. I also dislike it (faffing, security, claustrophobia, fear) and generally like train travel (just not XC). Trains are expensive in the UK though, particularly for what you get - often not a seat.
* amongst a few other things just now
Whilst air fuel isn’t taxed, for fairly obvious reasons, air
travel is for almost all flights departign the UK. IIRC for a typical short haul flight, the Air Passenger duty collected will be broadly similar to the sum that would be collected if jet fuel was taxed at the same level as petrol or diesel.
Anyway, this thread has proved one thing, and that is that each individual has a different set or priorities ehen it comes to their value of time and convenience. Some people are prepared to pay more for a quicker journey, some aren’t. Some people are prepared to trade journey time for comfort, some aren’t. Some people like to have a view, some aren’t bothered. Etc.
For me, it’s generally about time. I live my life with every minute used to the full, and I don’t particualrly like travelling itself (I much prefer the time at destination) so time travelling longer distance, where the gap between train and plane is usually greater, I will usally opt for the plane. And that’s with (nearly) free first class travel across Europe, eg French Alps to Paris for 2€. I did that by train recently and will fly next time, as door to door would be three hours quicker (subject to Geneva border control, which at present is horrific).
However other people have other preferences.
