The services between Liverpool and Newcastle stop at both Leeds and Huddersfield. Why do you need more services? Surely the local services between Leeds and Huddersfield should be down to the local TOC provider?
Yes, the stopper probably should be provided by Northern (or whatever that TOC becomes) rather than TPE but that's unlikely to change until the wires are up. When discussing the use of the current fleet, not including that service even to simply say it transfers to Northern was rather a glaring omission. I note that you kept the Huddersfield to Manchester locals with TPE, hence why it seemed that you'd simply forgotten about those seven intermediate stations.

Given the reduced scope for the 802's on that service proposal unless allocated to other TPE services not originally proposed. the Dft might decide to send of few 802's elsewhere, and if they opted to keep all the 185's with TPE they might just keep a limited number of 802's for Newcastle
Liverpool services only.
Indeed, TPE reducing the 802s down to a fleet of 9 units for the 7 Liverpool to Newcastle diagrams and 10 going to Cross Country for Newcastle to Reading / Southampton could, perhaps with some 802s released by GWR as well, be a good move in an integrated railway, freeing up Voyagers to eliminate the HSTs. It would fit in well with the Hitachi depots at Doncaster and West London and current stabling at Heaton and eliminating some diesel running under the wires.

It wouldn't quite fit so well with the concept of TransPennine Electrification though.

Surely the HSTs will be suitable until the WC 221s and/or EMR 222s become available.

Seems a waste of a bi-mode unit when nearly all of that route is unelectrified, especially as TPE don't do diesel-electric switchovers on the move therefore wouldn't make use of any of the short sections of overhead wires there are between Manchester and York. If 185s aren't an option for it then it would surely make more sense to take the 68+Mark 5 sets off the Saltburn route to use on Victoria to York, with the Saltburn route getting the 802s, at least there's 30 miles of wires between York and Northallerton for them to use on that route.

I can also imagine that the amount of noise a 68 will make sat at Saltburn (or Redcar in the interim) will be very unpopular with the local residents - remember both of these stations are in reasonably residential areas. Whereas the same turnaround noise from a 68 at Manchester Victoria and York is likely to be much less problematic. Added to the opportunity to use 802s on the service that has more overhead wires and more 125mph line speed it seems odd to me not to go for 802 on Airport - Saltburn and 68 on Victoria - York.

The other issue is this open question of a 2 hourly Newcastle - Edinburgh 'stopper' by TPE, they'd need stock for that which potentially adds to the 802 requirement.

Why?

They don’t even use the same units. It’s not physically possible to use a 802 on the Leeds to Hudds all stations

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

[/

Pretty much spot on there except the Manchester Victoria to York will be 802’s so long as nothing changes

I don’t see why Manchester-York would be 802s, there’s hardly any wires.

So, notwithstanding the valid points SuperNova makes, my basic maths says the following diagrams are needed:

  • 7 x Liverpool - Newcastle
  • 7 x Liverpool - Scarborough
  • 4 x Manchester Victoria - York
  • 8 x Manchester Airport - Saltburn
  • 5 x Manchester Piccadilly - Hull
  • 2 x Manchester Piccadilly - Huddersfield
Assuming 802s run from Liverpool, that would result in 5 surplus units. If the rest were 185s, that would require 38 units (assuming 6-car trains). I’m unsure how many diagrams Liv-Nottingham would be.
Another 2 units required for Huddersfield-Leeds and 6 circuits on the current South route (Cleethorpes-Manchester).

Manchester - Cleethorpes requires about 18 units on the current timetable. Some of those services are working as single units with some services using paired units. I am presuming that Manchester Piccadilly - Hull would be using a similar amount of units?
No idea where you get 18 units from. It's a 6 hourly circuit, so 12 units. There is a unit swap at Manchester Piccadilly every day at 8pm, so 14 units are involved, but really it's only ever 12 units in service.

My predictions:
  • Liverpool - Newcastle (802)
  • Liverpool - Scarborough (68+Mark 5)
  • Manchester Victoria - York (185)
  • Manchester Airport - Saltburn (68+Mark 5 with some 802s)
  • Manchester Piccadilly - Hull (185)
  • Manchester Piccadilly - Huddersfield (185)
I don't understand the obsession that many people on this forum seem to have with ditching the Mark 5 sets. Without them 3 car diagrams would become common again on routes where they aren't suitable.
Nearly correct. Victoria to York may be 185s initially, as everyone signs those, but 802s is the long term plan there. There aren't any plans for 802s on Saltburn, rather it will be a mix of Mk5s and 185s.

And yes, without the Mk5s there would be single units on peak hour runs. Which nobody wants to see.

Can easily be done by allocating 802s to one or two West Coast TPE services removing the need for ECS workings between Newcastle and Edinburgh.
That is certainly the direction of travel - 802s will be needed to increase the West Coast timetable back to pre Covid levels, given the awful 397 availability. But you will lose at least two extra 802s by way of ECSs between Newcastle and Edinburgh, there is just no other way to keep the fleet rotating sufficiently.

How about this? Number in brackets is number of trains being used every day. Everything is 5 or 6 coaches. Feel free to point out any mistakes as well

802 (15/19)
7x Liverpool to Newcastle
8x Man Airport to Saltburn

185 (30/36)
4x Huddersfield to Leeds
10x Man Pic to Hull
4x Man Pic to Huddersfield
12x Man Airport to Cleethorpes

68 (11/13)
7x Liverpool to Scarborough
4x Man Vic to York
The Huddersfield locals will remain single units for the foreseeable future due to platform lengths, both en-route and at either end. Everything else will be doubles (albeit only at peak hours on some services). There is no prospect of the Cleethorpes service returning to Manchester Airport, however it is likely to be extended to Liverpool as part of MRTF. That would take an extra 2 circuits, so would become 16 units.

In theory that would otherwise be a workable option, but the practicalities of who signs what means it will end up a little bit different.

It would be difficult to introduce 802s on Newcastle-Reading/Southampton - the only (25kV) wired parts of the route are Newcastle-York and Didcot-Reading. 802s cannot hope to reach Voyager timings on the diesel sections, so a wholesale timetable recast would be needed. Good luck with that!

Far more likely that XC will be bulked up with Avanti's Voyagers.

I’m very confused by this. TPE don’t operate Doncaster to Hull, unless you are suggesting a new route.

Don’t forget that several diagrams have gone back to single 185s in order to cover for Hitachi problems.
Apologies, but I had said in the post that I had not checked the number of units used on Manchester-Hull services, which in this case also includes the routing.
TPE are the local provider of Leeds - Huddersfield stoppers the same as Man Pic - Huddersfield stoppers. They have been for a few years now.
Okay, that is not what the wiki page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Trains for Northern Trains states. In checking Realtime Trains for Northern trains all day today it is showing that a class 155 departed Leeds at 0501 this morning and got to Huddersfield at 0602 (https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/se.../0000-2359?stp=WVSC&show=all&order=wtt&toc=NT). Admittedly there seems to be the only service from Leeds and there does not seem to be a return service, which I am presuming is down to restrictions with Covid or is it a lack of stock?

It's simply a one way move to get the stock into position.

With the greatest of respect, Wikipedia is not a very useful way of determining which operator is responsible for which route.

You obviously did not read the excel spreadsheet that I attached earlier:
That 18 units were used on one particular day doesn't mean that there are 18 unit diagrams. Unplanned set swaps happen all the time.

The current South route requires a nominal 12 units. Not 18.

No, 8 circuits and 16 units - it's just under an hour's journey from Manchester to Liverpool via the CLC.

In which case we could have the following:
  • 7 x Liverpool - Newcastle (802)
  • 7 x Liverpool - Scarborough (802)
  • 4 x Manchester Victoria - York (Mk5a+68)
  • 8 x Manchester Airport - Saltburn (Double 185)
  • 5 x Manchester Piccadilly - Hull (Mk5a+68)
  • 2 x Manchester Piccadilly - Huddersfield (Double 185)
  • 2 x Huddersfield - Leeds (Double 185)
  • 8 x Liverpool - Cleethorpes (Double 185)

I think the point is that being constantly made is that the traincrew knowledge doesn't support this - eg 802 to Scarborough, 68 to Hull etc. You would effectively be back to the issues of 2018 around traincrew knowledge. The servicing locations don't work either.

That’s the Huddersfield to Bradford service which extends from/to Leeds at the extremes of the day to get the stock in place.

The Huddersfield to Leeds stopper via Dewsbury (ie North TPE route that we’re talking about here) is operated by TPE and has been for some time.

So what does train crew knowledge support? By the way, that from someone outside the industry, sounds unacceptable method of determining long term usage. Short-term fine, but not forever.

If it turns out that it can only be services that run on the existing routes, then that just leaves Liverpool o Newcastle and Manchester to York, which really means 802s should be reallocated to routes where they better utilise wires.

TPE run the stopping service between Leeds and Huddersfield via Dewsbury. Northern also provide some calls on longer-distance services but several 185s are diagrammed for this particular route. They can't be discounted since they are currently being used there!

The allocation for the Liverpool to Newcastle requires more than 7 units to accommodate turn-around times and unit swaps

You’re looking closer towards 8 or 9.

11 is the current covid service pattern which includes a limited service to Newcastle

True, but I would prefer a new dual voltage bi mode 802 (OHLE/Third Rail/Diesel) for Bournemouth-Manchester and I'll explain why.

Why run in diesel mode on the third rail section which is rather long when you can run in electric instead?

Pure 802s would be better suited to Plymouth - Edinburgh as there are no third rail sections.

In theory that would otherwise be a workable option, but the practicalities of who signs what means it will end up a little bit different.

Don't forget Coventry-Birmingham as well

The allocation for the Liverpool to Newcastle requires more than 7 units to accommodate turn-around times and unit swaps

You’re looking closer towards 8 or 9.

11 is the current covid service pattern which includes a limited service to Newcastle
As an example:

LIV dep 1024
NCL arr 1323
NCL dep 1401
LIV arr 1659

I don’t see why unit swaps are things, but my idea allows for 4 spare 802s (maintenance and spares)

This won't happen.

I'm not sure if this applies to the 802s or not, but the Azuma fleet has a 36 hour restriction for time allowed in service away from a depot with Hitachi staff, the effect it has on LNER being that the 23:00 Kings Cross - York (and some other services) if it doesn't use a Mark 4 set has to use an 80x that's come straight from the depot, rather than one that's been in service all day. If that's the case with TPE's 802s too, presumably any unit starting or ending the day anywhere other than Craigentinny, Heaton or Doncaster Carr will only be able to complete a half day in service.

Modern Railways a while back said that LNER are seeking some additional bimodes...

Hitatchi are very protective/cautious of their 802 fleet.

I believe as another poster has said they’re only allowed on the road for a certain number of hours (especially as all units MUST have frequent checks for cracks now) and anything technical that a driver or conductor could fix MUST be handled by a Hitatchi engineer and not in-house staff

Surely that’s the 800s; the 802 contracts are entirely different.

They are clearly not in the public domain, unlike the IEP contracts, but I would imagine that, as heavy maintenance is still contracted to Hitachi, they will still have provisions to ensure units return to Hitachi depots. The fact that the TPE units can spend the night at Heaton and Edge Hill doesn't mean that there aren't provisions about getting them back to Doncaster and Craigentinny.

Amended but all totals the same

802 (15/19)
7x Liverpool to Newcastle
8x Man Airport to Saltburn

185 (30/36)
2x Huddersfield to Leeds
10x Man Pic to Hull
2x Man Pic to Huddersfield
16x Liverpool to Cleethorpes

68 (11/13)
7x Liverpool to Scarborough
4x Man Vic to York
Those are nominally the right sort of numbers, but it won't be distributed that way. At least, not next May.

That's purely down to factors like train crew knowledge - everyone signs 185s but barely anyone currently signs Mk5s. Also the fact that several 802s are going to be unavailable on a longer term basis whilst the cracks are repaired, and not all of the Mk5 sets have even been accepted yet.

Luckily, all three types perform similarly (on diesel), so they are, in a sense, interchangeable.

As an example:

LIV dep 1024
NCL arr 1323
NCL dep 1401
LIV arr 1659

You're correct that it's nominally a 7 hour cycle.

However you need to ensure that the units rotate through Craigentinny sufficiently (as that is where most of the maintenance is done).

So your options are either to start the service later, and finish earlier, at Newcastle - as the line to Edinburgh shuts earlier than that around Newcastle, and it's near enough a 2 hour journey between the two.

Or, as currently happens, you can have one (or more) diagrams each way that start at Craigentinny and end at Heaton, and v.v., running on Newcastle-Edinburgh services. And if you are running ECS anyway between those two places, you could kill two birds with one stone by adding a conductor and calling at stations like Reston...

802s are also stabled at Edge Hill, and in the pre-Covid timetable there was a unit that worked overnight services and nominally 'stabled' in Longsight Excursion Platform for a few hours. But yes, all sorts of acrobatics are needed to comply with Hitachi's requirements.

The Newcastle-Readings don't go that way. They run non-stop between Birmingham and Leamington, via Tyseley.
There was some XC services that went via Coventry to be stopping off at Birmingham International. Are these services no longer running?
