As with Chiltern.

Actually there are going to be 13 Mk5 seats aren't there so 14 only leaves one spare loco.
There will be additional 68s that get the Mk5a mods, but unless plans have changed they won't get TPE livery and will remain in DRS colours.

14 Class 68s fitted with the TPE modifications and will be changed into TPE colours in due course (when Mk5A's enter service).

2 spare in DRS colours fitted with the TPE mods.

1 spare DT as well.

Thought there were planned to be more made capable of operating with the Mk5as. One spare seems risky to me.

^^^Just seen your edit. Ignore me

3 spare....

14 locos (019-032) in TPE colours for the 13 sets of coaches = 1 spare.

Plus 2 in DRS colours (33-34) fitted with the mods.

3 spare so to speak.

While there are 13 sets of coaches, remember that not all 13 sets of coaches will be in service every day - the figure of 13 sets includes the maintenance spares/cover.

Hence there will be more locos spare on a day to day basis.

Perhaps I wasn’t that clear!!

Thanks. Anyone else think the driving trailer looks sort-of evil in that first photo, or is it just me?

I see it- light clusters make "angry eyes"!

Mind you, as a small kid watching coal trains coming up the Lichfield chord in the mid-90s I remember being slightly scared of class 60s simply because the light clusters always struck me as looking "angry"- as opposed to the friendly looking 56s and 58s!

Anyway, perhaps a little off-topic... Great video and pics, Tam.

Is this the best-looking loco-hauled set in the entire UK railway history ?

No, that would be an InterCity 225 (if you discount HSTs as not entirely conventional LHCS of course) ;)

You can keep Mk4s. I don't think they look that good, and in design and build terms they are cheap rubbish with a terrible ride. The Mk3, even though older, is a much better vehicle overall.

Mk3s are far better of course, no arguments there. It depends what's hauling them.
