I still can't get over how good those look.

Totally agree. I was indifferent at best about the new branding/livery when it first launched on the 185/350 fleet, but adding the faded elements at the nose end and applying it to less slab-fronted unit gives it a totally different look. Very modern and stylish.

Hi Tam,

Does this mean there are 2 Mk5a sets at Velim?

I thought so, but apparently it's the Class 68 loco. Only "anspen" was visible through the window :) I might get back there tomorrow and hopefully the full set will be made up and on show.

Strategically placed bushes, posts and furniture made it difficult to see, but it looked like just the hook and chain.

68s aren't buckeye fitted I don't think but considering that all coaching stock since the Mk1 has been it's a surprising omission on the Mk5s.

Is that why it's so beefed up with reinforcement, perhaps? Rather than preventing overriding it's just strengthened up to the point that an overriding Class 68 basically can't cause any damage?

Isn't that what the "teeth" are for, to prevent overriding?

Tam, thanks for your answer, I'd have been surprised if another set had made its across Europe without some spotting it! Hope that the full set is out for us all to see!

These anti-climb bars are for Mk5 x Mk5 contact, not Mk5 x 68.

When you look at images of them in construction, there doesn't appear to be much in the way of structure behind them, they do appear to just be corrugated plate over a box.

The ones on the loco end may well not *be* anti-climb. But the 4 large vertical box members may indeed be to absorb the force of a Class 68 flying at them (or them flying at a Class 68) in the event of a collision, given that a screw coupling and buffers does not provide any override protection at all.

Buffers do provide fairly good energy absorption though, which is what the box section would do. Plain vertical posts won't do much to prevent things climbing over each other.

No, but they may well stop the end of the coach being breached. Buffers provide good energy absorption, but don't stop something riding up above them.

I have a couple of videos from today, but my internet is patchy at the moment, so I probably won't be able to load them until I get to work tomorrow.
