1st April – A Field of Eastern Roses

The day began in the hotel in Hull, with my usual waking up and getting ready to depart, checking out was easy the only downside was getting a bit lost trying to locate the entrance to the platforms at Hull, but I arrived in plenty of time as the doors on the 06:06 Doncaster service to be released once the 05:56 to Bridlington had departed. I was happy as I was expecting this service to be a lovely pacer, but it was in fact required 158815 to kick my day off to a good start.

The ticket I was using today was a Northern freebie ticket I got sent from the Brigg related delays last June, anyhow there was only a couple other passengers on board for a service calling at all stations (first call at Hessle and Ferriby, scoring the platform loop), apart from Broomfleet, as it turned left at the junction to pause at Saltmarshe. Thankfully I easily made the +5 via the barrow crossing located at the Goole end of the station, as option B involved my bike. A late running freight train caught me off guard, but a couple minutes later dud 158901 rolled in with an unknown 153 (low platforms meant I was on the northern end where there is a hump). This service called at all stations, as I alighted at my 2nd new shack of the day at Ferriby for my first bike ride of the year. Dud 153363 was on the rear of that 158.

I reached the bike/footpath which runs alongside the River Humber, with the railway line on the left hand side, giving excellent views of the magnificent Humber Bridge before going underneath the bridge around a visitor centre. A quick double back on the road as I arrived at Hessle to clear the line from Hull towards Selby and to clear all shacks TPE passes through. Anyhow it was a busy platform as Scarborough bound 158907 rolled in, reversing at Hull before taking the misleadingly titled Yorkshire Coast Line (you do eventually see the sea around Bridlington), and into North Yorkshire, dropping me off at Filey. Filey station has a lovely station shed and historic looking footbridge.

My bike was already unfolded, but it wasn’t the best of rides as it kept jumping out of gear (returning to 1st gear which is built for high acceleration from a standing start with a low top speed) [which looking at it on the Monday evening, appeared to be a cable which had worked itself loose]. However swinging via a handy Co-Op (has the price of a Co-Op meal deal gone up to £3.50?) to grab some brunch before arriving at Hunmanby station (which compared to Filey was basic), arriving just as the rain began so good timing. As expected it was 158907 returning from Scarborough to take me back down south, the train picking more passengers up as it went southbound, but thankfully kept to time as I alighted at the hourly served Hutton Cranswick.

My fingers were crossed as it was a tight connection here, with a level crossing, the 158 departed and the barriers went up as I popped across the line to reach the other platform before the barriers returned (allowing me to once more put plan B to bed, which involved riding back up the line to Driffield). 158859 was on the next northbound service, which took me to another hourly served shack, this time Nafferton, and with a 35 minute fester at another basic station, although I was rewarded with confirmation of a sighting of a required 158 bound for Scarborough (saw it departing towards Sheffield when waiting to come into Hull earlier).

158859 returned from the bay platform at Bridlington to take me to the very limited served Arram, which serves a farm (and not a lot else in the nearby area). 45 minutes of reading my magazine later, I walked to the raised hump as once more the platforms here are low (as hopefully one of the pictures will show), and for the 3rd time of the day I returned to 158859 to take me back up the line to Driffield, bringing back memories of someone I used to know (an internet friend from my youth). Anyhow it was time to say goodbye to 158959 and board dud 158850 to take me to Cottingham, doubling back with 158907 as a mere time wasting move to Beverley, clearing East Yorkshire for shacks, which made me happy, but gave me a puzzle at what to do next (as I didn’t need either plan Bs due to making connections earlier in the day).

158859 returned me to Cottingham, where 158844 took me back up to Beverley, again as a time wasting move before required 158853 rolled in, which after checking RTT I decided to take all the way to Meadowhall, for a lack of a better idea on how to waste time (and gave me some good 158 speed as it was a semi-fast service calling only at Brough, Goole & Doncaster after the reversal at Hull). 158872 took me into Sheffield, where I made the connection back onto fresh dud 158853 for the run back to Hull, losing a bit of time on departure from Sheffield caused by a delayed freight service. The run allowed me to look out of the window and relax watching the countryside rush past.

Once at Hull, I noticed a large police presence, for West Ham were playing away to Hull in the Kickball championship, and noting that the little shop at Hull station wanted £4.99 for a meal-deal (!), I turned that down and headed to board 180110 forming the 18:36 Hull – Kings Cross, Hull Trains service, and things didn’t look good as the vast majority of seats had paper reservations, and the usual thing happened when some of the passengers boarded, removing the reservations to try and bluff that “this seat is unreserved” when the rightful owner arrived. Sadly the power-socket at my table seat was completely wrecked, but I managed to drown out the noise of drunken singing of racist songs (I think most of the other kickball clubs got mentioned), although not as bad when the train guard came through checking tickets with a couple BTP officers to charge those fare dodgers (personally I’m surprised there wasn’t any sort of pre-check at Hull, to check tickets before passengers being allowed onto the platform, just to catch those trying to blag a free trip back to London).

Anyhow, a storming run from the 180, even though it was overtaken south of Doncaster by a GC HST, it regained some time to overtake a Virgin service at Peterborough, arriving roughly on time. I allowed some of the drunken idiots to depart first before grabbing my bike (which I had hidden between the backs of seats), noting the many cans/bottles of beer/wine on the tables [one big clean up job, as I think the buffet ran out of booze after Selby]. To the Piccadilly line platforms, with 193/228 taking me forward to Green Park, before 96065/96058 taking me forward to Waterloo for some Jubilee line thrash, once more with my bike it is quite hard to do LU hunting.

Dinner was sourced from McDonalds at Waterloo, before waiting for 159014 to roll in to form the busy 22:20 service back to Salisbury (one can only hope that First will increase this service to at least a double unit). I alighted at Grateley, with a semi-push/semi-ride of my bike back home, giving me time to reflect on an excellent day, 2 more Northern 158s into my book (just leaves 3 out of the “Newton Heath” batch) into my book with 10 new shacks into my book.

2nd April – Another day on LU

My original plan for today was to have a lazy day trip to the Isle of Wight, but I decided to have a LU hunting day, with a goal of getting some more Piccadilly line units, plus revisiting a line I haven’t really been down for a year or so. A quick walk to the station with 159108 & 159020 forming the 07:39 service towards London Waterloo, as I took up my usual seat in the 159/1 for the run towards Clapham Junction (nothing really special happened on route, apart from a flying pear, although that was due to watching a BBC4 show on a tribute to Brian Pern).

At Clapham Junction, it was a case of jumping on the first service back out west which called at Wimbledon, this falling to 455902/455847, allowing me to interchange to platform 9 where 377518 was waiting to form the next Luton service (due to engineering works, the line via Tooting was closed so services were starting from Wimbledon). Taking a seat in the declassified first class area (must have annoyed someone who through it was their own private area) for the trip round the Sutton loop, the PIS getting on my nerve pretty much straight away (listing all the stations the train was calling at, I think it got to the end of the list once before cutting out to the “We are now approaching St Helier” style announcements). Anyhow it was the first time for me round the loop on a 377, and first time for nearly 2 years (I think) at going round the loop.

After Sutton, the train turned right to go non-stop via Waddon & West Croydon, before the usual Thameslink crawl via Norwood Junction & Crystal Palace, picking up its usual calling pattern at Tulse Hill. I decided to alight at Farringdon, and after checking a couple long-distance services (one was a dud 700, the other a pair of 377s), I jumped onto 21099 for the mile to Liverpool Street, wanting some 317 thrash. Sadly there wasn’t any 317s in the station (only 315s) so it was to Seven Sisters on a diverted Stansted Express service formed of 379029 & 379012, with 11047/11048 giving me some Victoria Line speed to Finsbury Park, crossing over to the Piccadilly line platform, with my moves in summary:

208/115 to Arsenal
232/173 to Holloway Road
175/876 to Caledonian Road
864/239 to Kings Cross St Pancras
132/135 to Russell Square
172/127 to Holborn
177/856 to Covent Garden (for an extended fester)
147/194 to Leicester Square
226/894 to Piccadilly Circus
223/862 to Green Park (one to avoid in future as the platforms are quite busy with a train display information which lies)
183/884 to Hyde Park Corner
158/217 to Knightsbridge
110/213 to South Kensington
896/130 to Earl’s Court

After this run I was down to only 9 Piccadilly line sets, feeling hungry and needing a PNB so I exited the station at Earl’s Court to find the little toilet was out of use, Co-Op wanting £4 for a meal-deal, so it was to Greggs for a £3 meal-deal before returning to the district line platforms. After around 10 minutes I decided to jump on 21403/21404 to take me to Victoria to make use of the free toilets when deciding what to do (DLR, Northern Line, S-Stock hunting or Central line). Flipping a coin in my head it landed on Central Line, so I jumped on the next district line service after returning to Victoria LU formed of 21351/21352 to take me to Mile End. I started off on the eastbound platform, but decided to shift to the westbound platform with the following moves:
91247/92250/92458/91153 to Bethnal Green
91273/92208/92158 to Liverpool Street
91017/92124/92142/91229 to Bank
91137/92156/92120/91117 to St Paul’s
91175/92042/92028/91155 to Tottenham Court Road (as a “wanting to have viewing of both directions” move)
91297/92196/92248/91051 to Oxford Circus
91187/92136/91311/91059 to Leytonstone (as a positioning move to intercept the return of a service which I just missed at Oxford Circus)
91073/92464/92178/91095 to Stratford

With only 3 units left, I called it a night, jumping on 96022/96063 for the run to Waterloo, arriving around 19:00, giving me plenty of time to grab a seat on the busy 19:15 towards Exeter, formed of 159020/159108/159005 (I really must try and avoid landing the same units both ways on a Sunday). I alighted at Andover in order to pick up my car from Friday afternoon, swinging via Pizza Hut to grab a pizza for dinner before coming home.

Reflecting on the day, was a good little run round the Sutton Loop (I’m trying to revisit some lines I haven’t visited for a good while within the London Zones), plus some more winners taking my LU requirements down to 35. I’m floating towards a trip to Exeter on Sunday as I’m getting some pacer withdrawal symptoms.

I'm also trying to figure out which Central line station would be best to fester on the look-out for those last 3 sets, Mile End is high on the list (when there are no district line services) as there is a handy bench at the eastern end of the westbound platform and gives good view of eastbound trains.

Another two top reads as always, some impressive work in clearing out East Yorkshire and so many LU needs with so little required!

Sounds like a good time with a few little things that I need to point out.

1. Congrats for clearing East Yorkshire!
2. I certainly wouldn't have done a 158 to Meadowhall just to come straight back to Hull ;)
3. A 180 all the way back to the cross when you could have bailed at Donny for a tram?! You're crazy!
4. That must have been some odd coin you flipped in your head to decide which line to head to after the Piccadilly line. A 4 sided coin!

Make sure you do this week then Keith, I'm coming through your way tomorrow or Thursday!

Fresh out of bunting but all the same enjoy your trip to the neighbourhood. I'll be commuting back tonight but absent on Thursday - out of town again. Shock! Horror! Probe! KJ on the rampage only a week or so after his last jolly ......

What's so famous about St. Helier?

That East Yorkshire leap looked to be very productive although shame that you ended up on a train full of footie fans going home. And two more Northern winners in the book can't be bad.

The Sunday soiree in London looked to be productive - will you ever have such a productive time again? But as for where to sit looking for Central Line units, that's a bit of a conundrum. White City is a possibility as a lot of trains seem to sit there for a minute or two although the downside is the central platform is usually occupied by terminating trains. Leytonstone is another possibility and I think that there's a suitable bench on the London bound platform.

Another good couple of reads. If I had to fester on the Central, I'd want to fester somewhere outside if it was warm. Leytonstone would probably be a good bet but being more central is obviously better as you can see whats running on the network quicker in either direction. I'm quite a way off that stage on the Central Line yet though so haven't given it much thought.

2 - I was bored and had time to kill ;)
3 - Or tight (as VTEC wanted double the price I paid)
4 - it was a theorical 4 sided coin which can only exist in a lab ;)

-------

I did look at Leytonstone on Sunday, but the eastern most bench on the westbound platform was at car 5 out of 8 so not really the best to sit down on.

Looking at the working timetable for the district line, it seems to suggest that nothing is booked to use that bay platform at Plaistow, nor platform 4 at High Street Kensington. *Ponders if I'm reading them correctly*

I won't do a full report for yesterday's little trip to London to meet up with Techniquest & Blindtraveller as it was more a social rather than bashing trip (and I'm sure Mr Quest's report will feature the details)

Although I did score the bay platforms at both Hayes and Harlington & West Ealing, getting lucky in spotting my 2nd last S8 (21111/21112) heading towards Aldgate from a Chiltern 165, only to walk pretty much straight into my other required S8 (21031/21032) sitting in bay platform 4 at Baker Street when interchanging from the Bakerloo :)

8th April – The Andover Fist (2)

Casting memories back to last November when the original Andover Fist train had a slight issue when a rotten sleeper gave way causing a carriage to say hello to the ground, this was the repeat tour, now with a slightly later finish making use of the lighter evenings. Like before it was a walk to the station picking up my return ticket to Byfleet (for no reason other than it was the same price as a Woking ticket) for the 06:59 service (which must be said after a few weeks of early starts was nice to get a bit longer in bed).

The weather was quite foggy and chilly, however once I had reached Andover the fog had disappeared allowing me to enjoy the early morning sunshine from 159108, picking up a few passengers bound for the Railtour at Basingstoke, before arriving into Woking a few minutes late (mainly caused by having to wait for a delayed XC 220 to cross over from platform 2 at Basingstoke towards the Reading line). Anyhow it was like déjà vu with swinging via a couple shops to get some supplies before some bus spotting (good range of buses at Woking for Rail Replacement services towards Portsmouth).

I was in coach F so positioned myself roughly in the middle of the platform, and I was nearly correct when dud 66165 rolled in hauling the usual Mk1 coaches (66165 is dud from a trip to Buxton in May 15), however once more I got given the narrow seat by the door (although this did come in handy later on as I kept cool, especially when sitting next to “Mr Leather Jacket”). Anyhow it was a trip along the slow line towards Basingstoke, pausing for 10 minutes before Worthing Junction for a Weymouth bound 444 and another freight service to overtake before heading south towards Winchester. It appeared unlike before we kept to the main line around Shawford, although at Eastleigh we had an extended fester waiting for a freight service to come off the branch line to the Eastern Docks.

Eventually we got going, carrying straight on at Northam junction, passing the point where we derailed last time, crossing the ungated Canute Road level crossing and into ABP land, running alongside many brand new cars & other vehicles, a couple multi storey carparks built for new cars (both import & export) before coming to the end of the line at the Southampton Queen Elizabeth II Terminal platform, an unadvertised station which used to be used for cruise trains from the North (allowing passengers to transfer from the train to the terminal building), however it is currently disused with a fence alongside the edge). The train was re-watered here, before winner 66005 took charge back north, passing the site of the former Southampton Terminus station before heading into a reception line at Northam Depot.

We eventually got going again after 10 (or so) minutes with 66165 back in charge, pausing briefly at Southampton Central to allow a couple passengers to board, before carrying on along the main-line, carrying straight on at Redbridge junction, before turning left after Totton to run down the line towards Fawley, pausing at the former Marchwood station to exchange tokens before running towards the Fawley Refinery gates, thinking that this could probably be one of the last trains down this part of the line since Fawley doesn’t use rail anymore, I can see it getting mothballed after the junction with MOD Marchwood.

Another brief reversal, with 66005 back in charge up the line towards Totton, pausing briefly before carrying on via Southampton Central & Eastleigh, turning left to head towards Romsey via Chandlers Ford and carrying on towards Salisbury, I wish I could say more about this journey, but I was enjoying travelling along lines lesser travelled. Arrival into Salisbury was around 5 minutes late, giving around 80 minutes off-train time (which I spent noticing how much things had changed in the city centre since the last time I visited for shopping).

With a late lunch eaten, I was back to the station, to reboard the service with a right time departure although it was a bit slow at start (which I guess was down to signal blocks on my local line), before pausing at a very familiar station to reverse once more, taking a crossover which has bugged me for many years and onto the former “Midland and South Western Junction” Railway metals, reduced to a single track which for the first mile and a bit runs alongside the main line towards “Red Post Junction”. A brief pause at the junction to allow some photographs to be taken of a steam train coming from Salisbury towards Solihull (although with the angle of the sun my photo didn’t look the best), and after the steam train passed we continued onto the line towards Ludgershall, reaching the limit of NR metals.

Certainly felt an odd experience in finding clearing a local line, noticing all the various bridges I have gone underneath many times when driving, we reached the site of the former Ludgershall station I think (certainly looked like it was an old platform covered by the greenery). The final reversal of the day and 66165 was back in charge, sadly it was non-stop through Andover, with some fast line running after Basingstoke (which was surprising) arriving into Woking a few minutes early, where it appeared half of standard class bailed (probably a mix of those who boarded at Woking in the morning and those bailing to get back to London quicker as the tour would continue via Staines). However with 40-odd minutes to kill before the next Salisbury stopper, I decided to pop to West Byfleet on 455847, returning on 450126/450081 as a time wasting move.

Witnessing a near miss of an idiot on the phone standing right next to the platform edge with a non-stop 444 rushing past, before a busy 159007 rolled in to take me back home, giving me an early end of a bash for a change. In summary a good day with 3 local freight lines covered & another 66 into my log, in terms of rail tours the only one I’ve got booked now is the “The Lancs and Yorks Builder” in June, with a couple interesting tours detailed in the Hertfordshire Rail Tours booklet (Immingham in November, Old Dalby in December) which may take my fancy depending on the cost and the amount of potential new track to be scored.

I forgot to mention that I bumped into a forum member who sadly no longer posts in the trip reporting section, for whom I miss for his detailed reports (Postye)

As always, an excellent read and I must say I'm jealous at your getting that track done. Once upon a time it was local to me too. Good work on scoring another 66 as well!

9th April – A random day trip to Devon

The original idea of today was to revisit a line which I haven’t been down for a fair few months, plus hopefully get some nice 143 thrash, so doing something I haven’t done for many months I was waiting for a train from platform 2 at Grateley, the 08:3X towards Exeter St Davids, spotting a late running 220 working an ECS from Eastleigh towards Reading dashing past before 159008 rolled in to take out to the west country.

I had forgotten how pretty this line is in places (but not forgotten how slow it is in places), loadings were reasonable, only really got busy once Devon was reached with day trippers heading to Exeter city centre to spend their pennies, and towards the sea-side due to the warmth. A right time arrival into Exeter Central, meant I made the connection to the next Exmouth bound service, which was showing as formed of 3, fingers were crossed (as I need 2x GWR 150s outright, plus 2 of the temporary 150/9s), however it was dud 150129 leading 153361 (which gave me a chance to tick a coach of the 150 as the only ever time I’ve had it was locked out of use at the rear of a Portsmouth bound 158). I alighted at the new station at Newcourt, with a little goal in mind as a few minutes later 150233 rolled in to take me back to Exeter Central, where it terminated into the little used bay platform (success!).

With 25 minutes before the next Exeter St Davids bound service; I popped out of the station to the nearby Tesco Metro to pick up some lunch, before returning with time to spare before 159012/159108 added some extra 62 chains to their running total taking me down the hill to Exeter St Davids. A Plymouth bound HST was running quite late, so it was a tossup between that and my original plan (dud 150232 on a Penzance service), in the end I went for the late running HST formed of 43126 & 43131 to take me down the coastline (one of the best trips within England), and across the South Devon banks to reach Plymouth.

I lasted a mere 5 minutes at Plymouth before I escaped on a nice empty Edinburgh bound 43303/43384 to take me back to Newton Abbot (noting signs saying that ticket barriers were going to be installed come June time), another run spent looking out of the windows at the rolling countryside. A few minutes later 153382/150131 took me to glorious Dawlish, watching the many people enjoying themselves on the beach before 43070/43133 took me on a bus stop leap to Teignmouth (RPIs out in force here today, with the temporary footbridge still in place). 150124 soon rolled in from Penzance taking me back to Exeter St Davids, where the next HST was dud so I decided to call it a night with the 15:25 service (as currently Grateley only gets an 2 hourly service on Sundays, maybe hopefully that will change in the future giving me more options on Sundays).

Anyhow it was a reasonable busy 159005 leading 159102 for the run back east along the West of England line, picking up more passengers & luggage as time went on, and running into 159014 at Salisbury which had arrived from Westbury. 10 minutes after Salisbury and I was alighting at Grateley, ready for a walk home after a nice relaxing day spent mainly looking out of the window at a beautiful part of the country.

An extreme shame that the 143s didn't produce for you, and that no HST winners came out either, but a nice and relaxed spin with a winner bay platform so happy days :)

Glad the tour went to plan this time! I need two of those three branches having only done the Fawley one myself.

As for the GWR 3 car 150/9s they don't like leaving Bristol very often I find. I have seen them a few times away from it but seems rare these days.

I've just caught up. It sounds like a good time was had on those trips, and well done on clearing the S8s (if I read that right)! I like the fact that there was some tram action in that trip to Devon too.

Very enjoyable reading. Particularly nice to read about your trip to Devon, it was lovely weather that day. We were on the beach at Exmouth, people were in the sea swimming. In April!
Would love to get the Ludgershall line in the book too.

Would love to get the Ludgershall line in the book too.

The 150+153 stopping service to Paignton looked rather cosy when it departed Exeter St Davids, full of people heading to Dawlish as when the HST passed it at Newton Abbot it had emptied out a lot.

It was nice to get a local line into my book, seeing as I pass it every day on route to work

@ Quinn, yep the S8s were cleared by luck, I/Techni spotted a required set on route to Aldgate when we were roaring towards Marylebone on a noisy turbo, and when I headed up the stairs at Baker Street to pretty much fall into my other requirement was very lucky indeed. It was a calculated risk for me when coming back from Finchley Road where to bail, in the end deciding to bail at Great Portland Street which turned out to be a good move as that S8 was the 2nd westbound service after a (thankfully) dud S7.

11th April – A trip to the West Midlands

As I had a couple days off, and with the long 4-day weekend coming up I decided to treat myself to a weekly season ticket to London (which paid for itself with using 2 peak-time services). For my first move of the week I decided to aim for a PSUL move within London, the 172 service from Woodgrange Park to Willesden Junction which bypasses Gospel Oak, and where I didn’t need the connection from Willesden Junction low-level towards the NLL, I needed the bay platform [did the connection on a Sunday morning service which starts from low-level to head towards Stratford].

It was to the 05:27 service, which unlike on a Saturday was formed of a pair of units and wasn’t empty! 159003 & 159008 were the units in charge for the first use of my season ticket for the run to Waterloo, the train picking up a good load at Woking, but it was a right time arrival which put me in good step with my plan for some Jubilee line action with 96055/96028 taking me to West Ham (why do I always seem to get high mileage sets when doing these long distance moves?), passing a C2C revenue block (looked like they were looking out for anybody tapping in at West Ham to check said passenger had a ticket to reach West Ham from wherever they boarded. 357320 was in charge to take me eastwards to Barking where I managed to jump on a busy 172005 for the single stop to Woodgrange Park, arriving one train ahead of my plan which allowed me to visit a nearby Tesco for breakfast.

Back to the station as the next service came and went, as I waited for the ECS to arrive to form the 07:59 ‘extra’ service. 07:59 came and went with the platform getting more busy as the 08:06 arrived to clear away the platform before the ECS rolled in 10 minutes late, as I took a seat on an empty 172004, making myself comfy for I would be on this 172 for nearly an hour. Felt very strange being on an empty 172, but nice with no announcements, and I note that the LO network map now seems to show Battersea Park as restricted service. It was an even slower trip than normal due to being caught behind the previous service so by the time the NLL was reached we were around 15 minutes late. A few passengers ignored the announcement by the driver that “This service does not call at Gospel Oak” and were annoyed when I scored the connection to the North London Line to pick up some decent speed, calling at the likes of West Hampstead.

The 172 turned left before Willesden Junction (which by this point there wasn’t many passengers left on the train as the 378 a minute or 2 behind would get to Willesden quicker due to having to await a path onto the Watford DC lines to terminate into platform 2 bay at Willesden Junction, another tick in my box, and after swinging via the toilets for a PNB I jumped onto 378209 for the run into Euston (which was good as this was previously a bus stop leap on the ELL core unit). 21043/21044 took me onwards to Baker Street from Euston Square with 3545/3255 on the tiny leap to Marylebone, with time to kill before the 10:10 departure to Birmingham Moor Street.

The 10:10 departure toward was being hauled by 68011 (whose only previous appearance was from Warwick Parkway to Leamington Spa) with dud DVT 82303 bringing up the rear, I was expecting it to be busy, but on departure there was only 2 other passengers in the leading coach for the sound of Cat purring away. A decent fast run on a Chiltern 68 has been high on my list so I was quite happy until Bicester North where my nose started bleeding (which a quick visit to the toilet soon put a stop to that). Sadly I had news that my final 390 was on Manchester services with my 153 not being allocated (that was one of the reasons for wanting to visit Birmingham on a weekday as there are more 153s out to play). My rover was purchased from the ticket office at Moor Street jumping on 172337 for a hop to the other side of the tunnel to grab some lunch from Tesco before returning to Snow Hill to do something I haven’t done in a fair while.

172215/172222 were on the next service towards Stourbridge Junction, where I crossed over watching as 139001 was doing driver training going backwards and forward out of the garden shed, before 139002 took me on a round trip to Stourbridge Town. I just wanted some 139 action, exiting for a quick photo before returning back on board to Stourbridge Junction with 172218/172212 forming the next service towards Birmingham, starting from Stourbridge so it called at every station along the way, as I bailed at Jewellery Quarter with tram 25 taking me to Grand Central on a pure “couldn’t be asked walking from Moor Street” move. I wanted to see which 153 would roll in to attach to the 15:49 Hereford service, but with time to kill it was a short hop to Butlers Lane on 323213 for some Starship based action (also as a chance to revisit a line I haven’t been along for a while).

323215 returned me to Birmingham New Street (annoyingly both 323s were already in the “9-80 club”), with a quick run out to Birmingham International to deal with my nose (again :() on 158828/158833, returning on a busy 350128 which called at all stations [bar Adderley Park]. Still with some time to kill before that 153 would appear, it was to Five Ways on 323211/323243 returning on 323215 [mmm 323 motor noise]. The 15:49 was already on the platform, well a busy 170/5 was, as I had my fingers crossed as a 153 was spotted rolling in, it was 15336...

...6, slightly disappointed I headed out of the station to the tram platform with tram 17 taking me to Winson Green Outer Circle, where I planned to wait to see if tram 28 would come out to play (I was sat at the rear of tram 17 when it was heading, noting that it gets upto some decent speed alongside the Snow Hill Lines). My nose decided it wanted to start bleeding once more (no idea what was wrong with my body today), but my luck suddenly changed as the first city centre bound tram was winner (and last) 28. The conductor kindly sourced me a tissue to try and clean myself up, but at least I would be going away from Birmingham with one winner in the bag. This time I did the walk to Moor Street, jumping on 172214/172341 to the other side of the tunnel, to grab a prime seat on the next Chiltern service (which as the previous one got cancelled this one could get busy). 168106 was leading 168217 on a 8-coach working, and the coach I was sat in on 217 was empty (I guess the front coaches would have been busy). My plan was to sit back and relax all the way to Marylebone; however like all good things my plan changed when I noticed at Banbury the next service was a stopping service which made use of the new platform 4, and indeed 165037 was sat on platform 4.

When did the Chiltern 165s start getting Wi-Fi fitted? Anyhow I took up a seat in the middle coach for the fast run up the Chiltern Main Line, pausing at most stations along the way, making a note that the next stopper from Gerrards Cross was a required 168/3, so I bailed from the 165 at Gerrards Cross, watched as a couple 168s stopped through before winner (for a 168/3) 168323 rolled in (just 326-327 & 328 left of the former TPE 170s left to get as 168/3s). Headphones in to get rid of the 170 drone arriving into Marylebone with good time, although this time I didn’t spot any required S8s out on the Metropolitan line ;)

3258/3561 took me to Waterloo (missed a trick in not ditching at Baker Street for the faster Jubilee line), with the 19:50 service tonight formed of 159019 to take me back to Grateley. In reflection, I managed to get that PSUL move in [was a bit worried when the ECS wasn’t tracking on RTT and was expecting it to have gotten cancelled], plus my last Midland Metro tram. That 153 escaped me once more, along with the 390, but my main goal was a good fast run behind a 68, plus some random line revisits.

That LM 153 will be your final unit ever at this rate! ;)

Apart from that nice work on some PSUL scores and your last Brummy tram!

That 153 is going to annoy you for all eternity I reckon, like 158884 is for me. I don't need to tell you I'm going to hunt that infernal thing in June!

Welcome to the club on 100% Cleared for Midland Metro, your space is still vacant in the same club for NET ;)

That sounds like a grand little day on which I would have gladly joined you, although you can keep the 17x mind! Particularly pleased you got some fast cat thrash after myself and Lord Quest's highly enjoyable run the other week.

And I must say how great value the super off-peak return is from London to Birmingham route High Wycombe. With my gold card was under £20!

True that Noddy, one more PSUL move into the book which is always a bonus (especially since it’s one which has been buggering me for a while)

Techni, true that 153 will probably fall eventually, probably on a Sunday Nuneaton - Coventry service.

BT - Glad you enjoyed the loco action, agreed about the 168s, the 165 was a lot more fun

13th April – Going Loco (2)

My first main trip of 2017 was a visit to Greater Anglia land for some loco based action, and today would see roughly a repeat of said trip, with one difference, being able to start earlier due to that season ticket. My train of choice this morning was the 06:57:

Which as the picture above shows was “Formed of 10 carriages”, 158887 was leading 158881, 159008 was unit 3 with 159012 bringing up the rear (and just overhanging the platform which meant only the front 7 carriages were released).

Due to it being Maundry Thursday, this service was a lot less busy than it normally would have been, however 159008 joins the 2 thousand mile club with 158887 becoming founding member of the 158 thousand mile club, I still had a table to myself after Basingstoke, where the service ran fast to Waterloo (passing many busy looking platforms). Once at Waterloo, I headed towards the subway and towards the peak time entrance to the Bakerloo line (I believe entry only during the mornings and exit only during the evening peak) just because I’ve always wanted to use it. Anyhow it was 3535/3240 taking me under the river to Embankment, heading up to the Sub surface line platform to see a required S7 on the Richmond bound, with my last D-stock also on the Richmond bound.

20 minutes later I jumped on 21357/21358 to Temple, followed by 21367/21368 to Blackfriars, exiting to the National Rail station, which was quite chilly (and I needed the toilet) so I jumped on 319445/319447 to take me down the hill to City Thameslink (to make use of the free toilets). Next northbound service was a dud unit, followed by required 700023 to take me to Farringdon, followed by 377523/377520 to St Pancras (working a very fast Bedford service, only calling at the Lutons & Leagrave). I exited the Bat Hollow and headed upstairs, with a race to purchase a BZ6 – Cambridge ticket (because it saved a couple quid on a regular London – Cambridge ticket).

The race was on, as the Thameslink machines didn’t sell BZ6 tickets, the EMT tickets only sell tickets from other EMT stations, but thankfully the GN TVMs near the suburban platform gateline sold BZ tickets, to save me having to queue at the massive (a good 20+) queue with the main ticket office, although it meant having to risk a queue at Cambridge to purchase my rover. Anyhow it was onto the 09:46(ish) service to Kings Lynn, running fast to Cambridge (as I needed some high speed 365 action before they are replaced by 387s). 365533 was leading 365535 for this busy service, but I got a bay of 4 in a motor coach of 533 (sat opposite a very posh sounding lady talking with her son whose name was something like “Franklin”). I had forgotten how great the 365s sound at high speed, as it raced along the ECML, turning to head towards Cambridge after Hitchin, arriving a minute or two early, giving me around 18 minutes to buy my rover.

After checking the TVMs (as I remember a couple years ago the TVMs at Norwich station sold these tikckets), the queue was long, but fast moving so it only took me around 5 minutes before I had my rover in hand and returned to the platforms, heading towards the north facing bays where 170205 was sat waiting on the next Ipswich service. On route I found out where my final GA 156 was working, which was good it was out, but bad as it was working the Sudbury line which required an extra ticket and meant my loco hauled action would be reduced. For it was a ponder on route towards Stowmarket (I had forgotten how rural this line gets in places), eventually deciding after Bury St Edmunds (and researching on RTT) to go for that 156, so I asked the guard to sell me the relevant ticket, and I remained on board until the end of the journey at Ipswich.

Crossing over to platform 2 (noting that the station works have been finished), and it was to Colchester with 90004 doing the honours (with DVT 82118 on the rear), noting a pair of 321s in the south facing bay platform, as I walked back, taking a quick break as the next semi-fast service departed before 360113 rolled in from Colchester Town to take me the one stop to Marks Tey, crossing over the footbridge to join winner 156418 for a brief break before it headed to Sudbury:

A quick turnaround (with changing carriages after the picture was taken) for another nice run back to Marks Tey (a pleasant little branch line). A short wait at Marks Tey before 360104 took me to Ipswich where it terminated, and I had time to swing via Greggs to pay £4 for a baguette & drink for a late lunch before DVT 82105 arrived with 90007 pushing to take me to Norwich where I had a short wait before the next Lowestoft bound service would depart, where I had a plan to intercept the return working of the 37s from Lowestoft, either for a +10 at Cantley or a tight +3 at Reedham.

It was over to platform 6, where 153322 had rolled in to attach to 153309 for the next Lowestoft service, arriving into Reedham with no sign of the 37s, a quick glance at the passenger information display and I jumped back onto the 153s for the return working had the most dreadest of words, “Cancelled”. For the 37s had decided to break down on the approach to Lowestoft, the 153s got as far as Oulton Broad North before having an extended break when waiting for the 37s to be shifted into the far end of platform 3 before the dog box duo continued onto Lowestoft, annoyingly both 37s would have been winners for me, but ah well. Swapping ends of the 153s to be in 153309 on a busy service (overhearing someone who sounded like works on the Victoria ‘Gatwick Express’ Gateline about tales on the premium nonstop service and charging tourists who dare board the red train with the wrong tickets for full-fat anytime tickets).

Bailing at Brundall for a short fester before the sound of 68019 was heard as it rolled into the station for a short leap to Norwich, remaining on board to get 68018 into the book for the run back to Brundall, with 153335 giving me some more dog box thrash back to Norwich, which gave a much better noise than I got from 170202 working the next Cambridge service, bringing back memories of my crazy bike rides last year to get some of the lesser served shacks into the book.

Cat O’Clock:

I remained on board all the way to Cambridge, changing over to the new platform for the next semi-fast Liverpool Street service, taking up a seat in the motor coach of 317653 leading 317884 for some glorious 317 motor noise to Bishops Stortford, for a few minute fester before 379020 & 379028 rolled in to take me non-stop to Tottenham Hale for some high speed 379 action (and to make a change of going via the ECML). I headed to the sub surface line platform, just missing a required S7 bound for Barking (30 seconds earlier and it would have fallen as it was just departing when I rolled onto the platform). Next up was 21509/21510 taking me to Tower Hill for a short fester before calling it a day with 21387/21388 to Monument, where I walked 500 miles to reach the W&C line platforms (I really need to research into out of station interchanges as I dare say some changes would be easier by exiting the station, crossing a couple roads and re-entering) with 65507/65508 taking me to Waterloo.

Due to the lateness of the hour, a quick visit to McDonalds before heading to the 22:20 service which tonight was formed of stalker 159008. 2 more 68s into the book (abit with short mileage), my final GA 156 into the book (just 3x 321s left to clear the TOC) plus another 700, bit disappointed in missing out on the 37s, but that was a lucky escape at Reedham for had I not noticed that “cancelled” I would have been stuck there for an hour.

---------------

14th April – Another lucky escape

My plan for today changed when I noticed that platform 6 at Woking would be in use on an hourly service today, normally the only booked use I can see is an early morning Portsmouth Harbour service which normally is departing just as the first service from Salisbury arrives. Anyhow it was a short walk to the station for today’s 05:27 service which was formed of 159019 which was nice and empty on the short run to Woking and as usual the 06:18 (ish) Woking – Portsmouth service was departing as we arrived.

I have no idea if one of the routing guide routes allowed use of the Guildford New Line towards Leatherhead to enter zone 6 at the Ewells, so I played it safe [I need to find out if this is a valid route to make a change when heading into London] with buying a Woking – Guildford day return, toying with the idea of purchasing only to Worplesdon, but in the end purchased to Guildford to avoid having to fester in the station with nothing around it. 450105 rolled into the bay platform from Portsmouth as I took a seat and awaited for departure, scoring the bay platform (another one bites the dust!) on route to Guildford, passing a 455 on the other line near Guildford (which at the time I didn’t think anything off it).

Once at Guildford I arrived at a station in a state of madness, for that 455 had got itself gapped (basically stopped moving on a section of track with gaps in the 3rd rail causing the shoes to lose contact) coming into the station, blocking the line. A triple 450 was sat on P4 being delayed, that emptied out to do a shunting move into P2, where the Woking bound 450027 rolled into P3 a few minutes late, and departed to run non-stop to Surbiton via Cobham (where it would reverse and head back to Woking along the mainline, basically if I had purchased the Worplesdon ticket I would have been stuck there for at least an extra hour, if not longer.

At Surbiton we arrived before a triple appeared from Alton/Basingstoke, formed of 450033, 450102 & 450083 to take me onwards to Waterloo pausing at Wimbledon, going over the flyover to pause at Clapham to cross over towards the Windsor lines due to weekend engineering works at Waterloo closing half of the platforms. Once at Waterloo I decided to head underground to have a short session on the Northern Line jumping on 51559/51558 to take me to Goodge Street, where I spent a good 30 minutes before required 51537/51538 popped up to take me back to Waterloo, deciding to call it quits 15 minutes later with 51572/51573 to Kennington, taking up a position to see both northbound lines. After 20 minutes I decided I had enough, and needed a PNB so headed to London Bridge on 51562/51563, witnessing an idiotic cyclist riding down a little passageway full of pedestrians (sorry self-regulation has failed, it is time to bring in number plates for cyclists so any idiotic acts can be caught on camera with the registered owner getting a fine).

After a much need PNB (making use of a 377/6) it was back to LU, with the first service heading north being required 51685/51686 so happy days on the leap to Moorgate, where my luck scored me 21511/21512 working a circle line service to Liverpool Street. Lucky as I only went that way due to having a 13 minute gap before the next 313 would depart as I fancied some PEP motor noise. At Liverpool Street, I decided to take 315808 all the way to Chingford (first time into Chingford for a fair few years) rolling into platform 1, exiting the station to visit a branch of Tesco in order to source lunch and to “step” back a train. The next service was formed of 315812 which I took to Walthamstow Central, heading to the underground with 11077/11078 taking on the speedy run to Finsbury Park, making use of the cross platform interchange to the Piccadilly line, jumping on 242/113 to take me to Arsenal (which has a handy island platform).

Luck wasn’t on my side this afternoon, eventually I scored 134, attached to set 161 to Holloway Road, but nothing else was spotted, and I decided to call it a day with the Piccadilly line (I think my next Piccadilly Line fester will be in the open air at Hammersmith), with 186/149 taking me to Finsbury Park with a needed PNB being taken on 365517 to Kings Cross. Crossing over to St Pancras for a random spot of 700 hunting scored me 700029 heading northbound on a Luton stopper to West Hampstead Thameslink (got these things can shift when running late), turning down a pair of 377s I spotted my final (for the moment) FLU 700 heading northbound which gave me something to aim for in a couple hours when it would return. 700045 took me to Farringdon, followed by 377512 & 377515 to Blackfriars. The next northbound Bedford service was already sat in the platform with 4 minutes to change between platforms it would be rude to turn down 700038 for the tiny leap down the hill to City Thameslink, returning on 319425 before heading to the underground.

It was S7 21505/21506 which took me to Monument where I walked to the DLR platform with a trio formed of 30/80/29 taking me onward to Shadwell for a brief fester. No luck with the final 3 units popping up so a trip to the London Overground platforms with 378150 taken to Dalston Junction (skipping Whitechapel due to that station being closed), with 378152 following suit around the corner to Highbury & Islington. 11009/11010 completed this random circular move for the fast run to Kings Cross St Pancras, for a short walk over to the Thameslink platforms with some time to kill before 700105 returned from Bedford to take me to Blackfriars, where once more a required RLU was sat on the opposite platform, and it would have been rude to turn down 700017 for the run to City Thameslink, followed by 700036 to Farringdon, crossing over to the LU platforms.

First up was a metropolitan line service to Wembley Park, followed by a circle line service formed of 21313/21314 to take me to Paddington, Praer Street platforms (for the circle line for this weekend was operating as a circle). Although an extended fester at Edgware Road (change of driver I assume) meant I would have to decide on the 17:57 HST based on the rear power car as I wouldn’t have time to dive to the front. However once at Paddington the rear 43 on the 18:00 took my eye as it was required 43056, so I jumped on board the Penzance bound service which had 43143 leading. For the first few minutes it was so slow due to the relief lines being closed, however I didn’t need my backup option of Le Voyager as for some reason the Basingstoke stopper had been held back (not an official connection), so it was to Basingstoke on 165122 featuring a very jolly guard.

Once at Basingstoke, it was a visit to the Pizza GoGo place outside the station (as I didn’t really have many other options) before 159010 appeared to take me home on the shuttle service. Probably not the best of days for my red pen, but a few more LU units into the book, a few more 700s plus another GWR 43, with a couple line revisits (and a micro-grice of platform 6 at Woking).

Nice work on clearing the GA DMUs! A shame on the 37s failing though, but the 68s will have made up for it I suspect.

Considering your very limited needs in London, you sure did well there. Microgricing platform 6 at Woking is nicely done, and a lucky escape with having not bought to Worplesdon!

15th April – Ditching my reserved seat for some Trams!

I had 2 Sheffield Trams (excluding the new ones still to enter service) plus 3 Nottingham trams left to locate on a trip which got pushed back from March due to the HST tour. The idea of spending a few hours in Sheffield before leaping down 40 miles to Nottingham with a detour to visit a certain new shack, with the day beginning with the 05:27 service which was formed of stalker 159008 to take me to Waterloo, no random detours this morning.

Once at Waterloo, it was under the river to Embankment on 51506/51507, heading east to Blackfriars on 21521/21522 swinging via a handy Tesco before heading to the National Rail platforms, the first Bedford being a solo 377, but I was waiting for the train behind to hopefully give me some 319 motor noise to enjoy. I was in luck as 319011 rolled in for the noisy trip north to St Pancras low level, transferring to the high level platforms to board 222021, ditching my reserved seat to sit in an empty carriage of probably my highest distance travelled 222 (4th time this unit has appeared for me when going St Pancras – Sheffield).

After a quick PNB I walked over to the tram platform to see a city bound service just departing, so with 10 minutes before the next service I turned left to have a gentle walk alongside the tram tracks, passing what I can only assume is the former station stop. I was in luck as when I was waiting to cross the tracks required tram 111 was spotted on a Yellow route service so one was out to play, as I finished my walk to Castle Square, wishing I had picked a better stop to fester at (not much in the way of seating). Sadly there was no sight of 118 as 111 returned to take me on the super tiny (6 chains!) leap to Fitzalan Square as I still had a couple unknown trams left to spot. Alas when the first tram I saw heading to Halfway returned I knew my luck to clear the original batch wasn’t going to be today.

I walked back towards Sheffield station, grabbing some lunch before having a small fester to see if any of my required Northern units were floating around, I was in luck a required 158 rolled in from Leeds so I dashed off to purchase a day return to Meadowhall without thinking to check what service that 158 would work next (thinking it would head back out to Leeds as a stopper via Barnsley)... it wasn’t that service as a 142 departed from platform 1, with a quick search pinpointed that 158 as working the York bound service, which would depart at around 13:30... I was booked onto the 13:39 Norwich service, and said a select couple words in the direction of said unit, but forgiving it as who can hate a 158 (other than Quinn?)

With nothing better to do I headed out to Meadowhall on 142034 returning on 158853 just for the sake of using up my ticket and to gain an extra ~ 7 miles. The EMT Norwich service was actually on time for once as 158799 rolled in with a very familiar looking 158889 on the rear. Needless to say once more I ditched my reserved seat in 799 to sit in the former 1st class area on 889 (giving my phone a quick boost of electricity using the well hidden plug sockets). A nice enough run through the countryside and pretty soon Nottingham was reached, as I headed to the tram platforms purchasing my day rover, jumping on 223 to Old Market Square which from my trip back in June was a good stop to fester at.

I didn’t even get chance to get my deckchair out before winner 202 popped up to clear the original Nottingham trams to Lace Market, returning on 214. This time I managed to get my deckchair out (ok sitting on the wall), noting that Toton Lane services were being disputed due to a road traffic incident in the Beeston area, but before long winner 237 popped up to take me to Royal Centre, which is probably a better stop to waste time tram & bus watching. Eventually I covered most of the trams that were out (the “first spotted” ones were returning, so I headed to Old Market Square on 220 to grab an ice-cream from the world’s slowest branch of Burger King before heading towards High School on a busy 213, jumping back a tram to 207 to Wilkinson Street for a quick walk across the car park towards the depot where I spotted my last tram:

218 was enjoying the Nottingham sunshine, so I won’t be clearing the Nottingham trams either today (massive boo!) so my rough plans for the 8th July will have to change to include a visit to Nottingham (although it does give me some HST action afterwards), anyhow slightly disappointed I headed back to Old Market Square on 227, jumping back on 236 to the station after a quick visit to McDonalds to make use of a free drink voucher. Purchasing my day return to Ilkeston, I headed towards platform 4 to see a familiar face, 158853 (must have had a set swap at Sheffield and headed to Leeds rather than Bridlington).

10 or so minutes after departure, the train arrived at Ilkeston to clear the EMT stations once more, reviews on the station is quite basic in terms of seats, fares to Meadowhall being cheaper than the fares to Sheffield, a handy footbridge at the Nottingham end, with the town centre looking like a 10 minute+ walk away. A busy station for passengers as 158791 arrived to take me back to Nottingham, where to waste time I jumped onto tram 203 to take me all the way to Clifton South, stepping back a tram to get 212 back to Lace Market for a visit to Tesco, with 214 returning me to the station, ready for the 19:36 (ish) HST to St Pancras.

43073 was leading 43059, once more I changed my reserved seats to pick a seat near the centre of the train where the carriage was nice and empty for the fast run to St Pancras, pausing only at East Midlands Parkway, Leicester & Market Harborough before reaching St Pancras. For lack of a better idea I headed to the Piccadilly line platform with 170/175 eventually showing (next service was in 10 minutes time), taking me to Holborn, changing to the Central Line for some long odds that one of my final 3 sets would pop up heading westwards. As expected after 4 I decided to jump on the 5th formed of 91169/92032/92126 & 91127 to Bond Street, with 96005/96060 taking me to a Waterloo in chaos.

Due to a systems mess up, some services were being cancelled or delayed, including the 22:03 towards Portsmouth Harbour, meant there was a big crowd waiting to board the 22:20 Salisbury service, as groans came in when 159104 rolled in on its own, this was the scene before departure leaving passengers behind at Waterloo:

Yep it was full & standing, emptied out at Woking for replacement road transport, with another load of passengers exiting at Basingstoke, but arrival into Grateley was around 15 minutes late caused mainly by the late start and extra dwell times for unloading. Walking home gave me a chance to reflect, I managed one goal to get that new shack in, however missed out on clearing either Sheffield or Nottingham with both 18s staying out of reach. You win some, you lose some :)
