We decide the next best move is a rail service to a major London railway station, so we enter the railway station in good time to board the 1241 Southern service to London Victoria that arrives there at 1257 on Friday afternoon.

We then board the 1306 Arriva Transport for London service 38 from Victoria Bus Station to Islington Green, arriving 1343, Friday afternoon. Will it be a Boris Bus?

That particular departure is not scheduled to be one but by waiting 3 minutes (on Islington Green) we can catch one to Hackney Central, arriving at 1413 Friday afternoon

Time now for a rail journey on the North London line, so we make our way into the railway station on board the 1433 LO service to Richmond which arrives there at 1526 on Friday afternoon.

We continue on the 1536 SWT service to Martin's Heron arriving at 1617, Friday afternoon

Whilst at one quaintly-named railway station, we have often wondered about the name of another certain station, so we decide to see what it is like and board the 1647 SWT service to Winnersh Triangle that arrives there at 1702 on Friday afternoon.

Quickly realising that Winnersh Triangle is just an industrial estate from which (it being a Friday) most workers have long since departed) we make our way up to the main road and catch the Beeline 190 bus at 1733 (from Loddon Bridge Cavendish Gardens) to Reading St Marys Butts arriving at 1757, Friday afternoon.

Just time to have a very quick hot drink before crossing the road to the bus stop there where we just have time to board the 1815 Thames Travel service X39 to Oxford (Castle Street) that arrives there at 1928 on Friday evening.

We take a short stroll to Oxford bus station and catch the Stagecoach X5 at 1940, travelling to Cambridge Parkside, arriving at 2238, Friday evening

Looking out our options, we decide that walking around this time on Friday night is not a good one and we are told by two security officers just finishing their shifts there is a bus stop a very short further down the road which takes you direct to the railway station, which is what they intend to do, so we join them in the short walk and board the 2311 Stagecoach in Cambridge service 13 that arrives at Cambridge railway station at 2315 on Friday night.

Which I think was a mistake as we arrive just in time to see the last train to London disappearing and the security officers continuing on the bus in the direction of Haverhill, which our rules won't allow us to do.

Rather than retrace our steps to town, we find a B&B in Station Road then catch the GA 0641 train to Ipswich, arriving 0803 Saturday morning

We decide to keep to an easterly route, but head northwards on a direct service and we have plenty of time to look around the station before boarding the 0844 GA service to Norwich that arrives at 0927 on Saturday morning.

We have half an hour to wait before the EMT departure at 0957, getting off at Widnes at 1505, Saturday afternoon.

After such a long rail journey, we decide to leave the railway station and take the short walk to the bus stop on Lockett Road where it is soon time to board the 1532 Arriva service to Clock Face Shopping Centre that arrives there at 1547 on Saturday afternoon.


Clock Face is the name of the settlement.....not the shopping centre..

We continue on Arriva's 32A at 1608, arriving in St Helens Hall Street at 1627, Saturday afternoon

We decide to leave the administered area of Merseytravel and travel to the TfGM "frontier post" that is Leigh (with its "guided busway" scheme in its very early stages of land clearance and associated works), so we make our way to the correct bus stop to catch the 1645 Arriva Merseyside service 34 to Leigh bus station that arrives there at 1735 on Saturday afternoon.

After a very brief look at our surroundings we hurry to catch the 582 First Manchester bus at 1740 to Bolton bus station, arriving at 1812 Saturday evening

That last connection is perfectly timed to enable us to board the 1835 Transdev Lancashire United service 225 to Clitheroe Interchange that arrives there at 2016 on Saturday evening.

We decide to have an early night and a late start and next morning catch the 0951 Northern service to Armathwaite, arriving at 1201, Sunday afternoon

That last journey was indeed fortunate to be made, the day being Sunday when it actually gives the opportunity to travel on the line from Clitheroe to Hellifield, and the day being good with the weather, we decide to spend some time here at the northern end of the iconic Settle to Carlisle line, before boarding the 1543 Northern service (from Leeds) to Carlisle, that arrives there at 1600 on Sunday afternoon.

Time for a good look round Carlisle[twice], before boarding the 1900 Northern service to Whitehaven, arriving 2010 Sunday evening.

Public transport out of Whitehaven on a Sunday evening is next to non-existent, so we have another early night and next morning catch the NX570 coach at 0715 and travel to London, getting off at Marble Arch at 1655, Monday afternoon

We find to our cost that Sunday at this time in Whitehaven offers nothing in the way of either bus services nor later timed rail services south, so we decide to ask a couple of awaiting passengers at the station about services proceeding northwards and very fortunately, we have not missed the service that commences its journey there and board the 2028 Northern service to Flimby that arrives there at 2050 on Sunday evening.

I did find the only particular service that was still available which was the 2028 Northern service to Carlisle that commences its journey in Whitehaven, which I used in my posting.


However, to keep to the spirit of the quiz as your posting did come first......


We decide to use the tube to seek a better interchange facility so we enter Marble Arch LU station and board the 1711 Central Line service to Oxford Circus LU station that arrives there at 1714 on Monday afternoon

We switch to London's bus network, catching an Abellio C2 at 1724 to Parliament Hill Fields, arriving 1756 Monday evening

Carrying on the rush-hour use of bus, we board the 1806 London Bus service 214 to Kentish Town station that arrives at 1818 on Monday afternoon.

We have half an hour to wait before catching the 1748 FCC service to Mitcham Junction, arriving at 1832 on Monday evening

Spurning the opportunity to sample the Croydon Tramlink because of the time of the day, we decide to continue onwards by rail and board the 1841 SN service to Horsham that arrives there at 1942 on Monday evening,

We continue our journey on the 2001 Southern service and get off at Southbourne at 2043, Monday evening

We had hoped for a bus service now, but no such luck, so it is back to the railway station to board the 2142 SN service to Fratton that arrives at 2158 on Monday evening.
