We walk to the adjacent railway station and escape to the comfort of a HST in the form of 1W19, the 0530 First Great Western train to Oxford, arriving at 0619 Thursday morning.

Heading back Oop North, we board the 06:38 CrossCountry service 1M18 bound for Manchester, taking it as far as Macclesfield, where we arrive at 09:12 on Thursday morning.

We continue with the 0941 Virgin Trains (West Coast) service to Manchester Piccadilly, arriving 1007 on Thursday morning.

We're just across the platform to Platform 6 where we catch the First Transpennine Express service 1B72 towards Cleethorpes, which pulls away on time at 10:20. We take the train to sunny Scunthorpe, arriving at 12:03 on Thursday afternoon.

We then board the 1230 Stagecoach in Lincolnshire service 100 departure to Lincoln (City Bus Station) arriving at 1420 Thursday afternoon.

We then take the short walk to the railway station in time to board the 14:36 East Midlands Trains service 2L68 bound for Leicester, which we take as far as Loughborough, arriving at 15:57 on Thursday afternoon.

We next board the 1621 EMT service to Kettering that arrives at 1659 on Thursday afternoon.

We just miss the train to Corby, but are quite keen to go there anyway. Si we walk out to Northfields Avenue to catch the 17:20 Stagecoach Midlands service X1 to Corby (George Street), where we alight at 18:00 on Thursday evening.

Using a different service number, we next board the 1815 Stagecoach Northamptonshire service X4 to Earls Barton (Elizabeth Way) that arrives there at 1921 on Thursday evening.

It's a reasonable wait until the next bus, which is the 20:10 Stagecoach Northamptonshire service X47 towards Northampton. It's a short hop to Weston Favell Shopping Centre, where we alight at 20:21 on Thursday evening.

And around the corner onto Cherry Lodge Road and board the Stagecoach Midlands service 53, which leaves at 21:04. It heads to Asda (Gowerton Road), and we stay with it as it becomes the 51*, conveying us to Northampton General Hospital at 22:19 on Thursday evening.

*The 53&51 may appear separate services, you can apparently stay not eh bus and through tickets are available.

We take the three minutes walk to the bus stop on Billing Road and next board the 2232 Stagecoach Northamptonshire service 9B to New Duston (Main Road) that arrives there at 2254 on Thursday evening.

That's end of service in this part of the world, we so seek lodgings in the Hopping Hare pub & hotel for the night. When light dawns, we make our way to Wrenbury Road where we catch the first Stagecoach Northamptonshire number 15 bus towards Spring Park, which leaves at 06:07. We alight at Northampton Rail Station at 06:27 on Friday morning.

Feeling like a return to the capital, we enter the station and board 1R03, a Voyager. We take it all the way to London Euston, arriving at 0731 Friday morning.

As soon as we get to London, I decide to take us back out! We walk down to Euston Square Tube station (6-7 minutes) and catch a Hammersmith & City line train at 07:44, taking us to London Paddington, where we alight at 07:55 on Friday morning.

(No prizes for guessing which train DasLunatic's got his eye on )

However, with the International Edition still not cleared for takeoff, we merely surface for a short while before heading for, and boarding, the 0805 Bakerloo Line service. We take it all the way to its terminus, Elephant and Castle, arriving 0829 Friday morning.

Larger airports have good ground transport connections across the country (especially National Express), so it can be worth going there.


A brisk transfer to Elephant & Castle NR station allows us to catch the 0839 Thameslink train to Carshalton, arriving 0907 Friday morning.

Then we walk out onto West Street where, at 09:17, the Quality Line S3 service duly arrives. We take it as far as Worcester Park Station, alighting at 10:08 on Friday morning.

We enter the station and board the 1018 SWT service to Dorking (Main) that arrives there at 1042 on Friday morning.

We take the 3 minute walk to Deepdene station, giving us plenty of time to catch the 11:08 First Great Western service bound to Redhill, where we arrive at 11:25 on Friday morning.

Deciding that Swanwick isn't the most luxurious of places on the planet (which it really isn't; my cousin hails from there), we then board 1N71, the 1500 Southern service to Southampton Central, arriving there at 1519 on Friday afternoon.

Deciding on a rail journey to an area of the North-East with much in the way of heritage, we next board the 1546 XC service to Durham that arrives there at 2130 on Friday evening.

Exiting the station and heading to the bus station, we then board the 2204 Go-North East service 20 to South Shields (Church Way), arriving there at 2330 on Friday evening.

It's just a 4 minute walk to South Shields Metro Station, and we catch a Yellow Line train at 23:42, which is bound for Benton. We alight at Jesmond at 00:12 on Saturday morning.

At this point, we get in our sleeping bag and wake up to see loose change dotted around us. We use this change to fund our next day - starting with the 0512 Green Line service to Heworth. We alight at 0523 Saturday morning.
