I personally agree with Robinson's definiton of a through line. If this wasn't the case, then most stations in areas like Merseyside, Greater Manchester (South), West Yorkshire, Central Scotland, and Greater London (and many more) being barred as starting stations.

Same, a through line to me is a line that runs through the station i.e. with a station either side. Doesn't need to be infinite at both ends.

We'd have to erase a lot of the game's history if we didn't agree that. Starting with the last game we finished, which I started in Vauxhall (which is basically on the Waterloo Branch from Clapham Junction, if you think about it).

The answer to the problem is simple. There are enough "through" stations on the British rail network to use as a STARTING station on a leg, which offer long journeys whichever direction you take.

Stations such as Preston, Crewe, York, Newcastle, Derby, Salisbury, Reading, Bristol, Edinburgh, etc, immediately spring to mind. I would describe all of these as "through" stations...see what I am getting at? All of these confirm to the strictures of Rule 1 on the matter of "through" stations.

Why bother starting a leg on a small branch line (with a terminal station) in the first place, as this only offers one reasonable direction of travel on a leg.

I agree, although as has been said, what about stations such as Newton Abbot, which is 3 away from Paignton, is this permitted or not?

This is precisely the problem, which is why I have asked for a definite ruling from the quizmaster. It has to be well-defined one way or the other what's allowed and what's not. I have already expressed my views on whether such scenarios should be allowed; all we can do now is see what adtrainz says...

I'm not taking any action on this, for this clear reason.

At the end of the day, if someone says Abererch then Pwlheli, they're only going to get 2 points, which in the points tables doesn't count as very much.

Surely if you want more points you're going to go the way where you can get more of them in one leg!

Through line stations, even if they are the last before a terminus, are valid.

Oh, and speaking of points tables, one should be due very soon. OxtedL is calculating them much more precisely than my method, using an Excel spreadsheet.

Thank you for the clarification. I have to agree as well on the point that it's the decision of the player to take 2 points or open the game out. And if you really want to avoid that happening, usually taking the 3rd last station helps!
